Buried underneath the hoopla surrounding the announcement of ASUS' Lamborghini-branded ZX1 at CeBIT, the more mellow P560 was also announced, featuring pretty much every spec the average WinMo buyer could want these days in a package that speaks far, far less about the car you're driving (or wish you were driving, anyway). HSDPA, WiFi, 3.2 megapixel autofocus cam, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, GPS, microSDHC slot, 256MB of ROM, 128MB of RAM, and Microsoft's freshest build of Windows Mobile Professional -- 6.1, that is -- all have managed to find their way into the P560's unassuming shell. Not bad, though the €500 (about $772) price tag could scare a few folks away when it launches next month.

[Via Navigadget]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

ASUS P320 drops by the FCC, you know, just to say "hi"

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, GSM, EDGE

It's not going to satisfy your unending hankering for 3G, but ASUS' P320 does have at least one thing going for it: it's mighty small. The so-called "Galaxi Mini" first broke cover back at CeBIT, offering GPS, WiFi, and a 2 megapixel camera in one of the smallest Windows Mobile 6 Professional packages to hit the market. Add that to the fact that it's looking a heck of a lot better in black than the sickly mauve the ASUS gals and dudes were showing off a couple months back, and we might just be sold. No word on a release date or whether it'll be officially offered stateside, but with that FCC certification under its belt, at least owners will be able to rest easy knowing that they're emitting only the finest, government-approved electromagnetic radiation available.

<a href=http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=805734&fcc_id='MSQP320'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

ASUS P750 finally cracked to do owner's VGA bidding

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile

Seriously, ASUS, what in the heck were you thinking? If you're going to imbue your P750 with a feature as hotly desired (particularly in the Windows Mobile world) as VGA resolution, what could possibly possess you to not merely gloss it over, but to artificially downgrade your high-end beauty to plain old QVGA? Blasphemy, we say -- and thankfully, some of the folks responsible for first noticing ASUS' indiscretion have come out and fixed it. Members Sorg and GreateVK from asusmobile.ru have crafted a rough fix, and say that a final version should be available to everyone within a week. If that's not an awesome (and unexpected) present to P750 users around the world, we don't know what is.

[Via MoDaCo]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

ASUS P750 secretly packing VGA resolution?

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile
Here's one you may not have heard before: a manufacturer decides to stick a VGA touchscreen in some handset model not because it wants VGA resolution, but just because it got a killer deal on them. That's the rumor being floated on a handful of sites and forums about ASUS' monster P750 Windows Mobile 6 Professional device, with some sharp-eyed contributors noticing that each logical pixel on their devices' screens are actually comprised of -- count 'em -- four physical pixels. Indeed, a quick glance of the spec sheet for the alleged part number used reveals a "VGA/QVGA dual viewing mode," so the story seems to check out, and folks are apparently already hard at work enabling full 640 x 480 resolution on their beloved devices. Good luck, everyone!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Tiny ASUS P320 breaks cover at CeBIT

Filed under: Handsets, Features, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE

Alongside decidedly flashier announcements, ASUS has also chosen CeBIT to debut its diminutive, modestly-specced P320, a Windows Mobile 6 Professional piece sans 3G that we first spied last month. It's not going to turn any heads, but hey, that's what the ZX1's all about; the P320 is really here to get down in the trenches, get dirty, and get some work done, all while making sure it doesn't dwarf the hand it's in. We'd prefer, oh, any other color besides flesh tone, but thanks to a positively miniature 99 x 55 x 13.35mm outline, 2 megapixel camera, and WiFi, we might just be willing to overlook it. What's more, there's no mention of GPS on the spec sheet, but we're going to venture a guess the necessary circuitry is on board thanks to a side button conveniently labeled -- you guessed it -- "GPS." Check more pictures after the break, or just hold out for a release whenever ASUS gets around to it. Your call.

Gallery: Asus P320 galaxy mini

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Hands-on with ASUS touchscreen M536 QWERTY

Filed under: Handsets, Features, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Here you go QWERTY fans, ASUS' M536. This touch-screen follow-up to the M530W runs Windows Mobile 6.1 under that 2.43-inch, 320 x 320 display. Inside you'll find 802.11b/g WiFi, 256MB of flash, and GPS. While it sports 3.6Mbps HSDPA on the 2100/1900/850 bands, it's unfortunately limited to GSM/EDGE/GPRS riding the 900/1800/1900 frequencies. As such, we'll bet this one is heading straight to Europe, Statesiders. Our hands-on was brief due to that fingerprint scanner. Still, we'd bet that this business minded handset will come sporting ASUS' own sultry WinMo overlay whenever it does launch. Regardless of the cause, we certainly like the trend of these enhanced touch-screen UIs dominating the high-end cellphone market. Now meet ASUS' GUI slickness destined for their newest touchscreen devices including the ZX1. Starting with a Windows Mobile 6.1 core, ASUS slathers on a new customizable Multi-Home 3D interface meant to simplify access to your today screen, life and business applications. Think HTC's TouchFlo only sexier. ASUS even threw in some "album cover flow" to the media app and the ability to more easily manipulate all your digital media with enhanced figure gestures. You can even drop everything into a visual carousel if that's your preference. See for yourself in the video after the break.
Continue reading ASUS' new touchscreen GUI prettifies Windows Mobile 6.1

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

Eyes-on with ASUS ZX1 Lamborghini phone

Filed under: Handsets, Features, ASUS, Windows Mobile

While poking around the ASUS booth this morning we had a chance to witness the world premier unveiling of the ZX1 Lamborghini. We even took a few shots before it went under the glass. However, the real treat is the UI based on a Windows Mobile 6.1 core running special ASUS tweaks. It's "just like the iPhone" according to our friendly ASUS guide. The device is expected to fetch an unsubsidized €1,000 ($1,500) price tag when this 3G world-phone launches in Europe this May. Maybe you'll think it's worth it when we get back to you in a few with a video of the GUI albeit sans all that Lamborghini theme nonsense.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Thomas Ricker

ASUS Lamborghini ZX1 propaganda spotted at CeBIT

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

So it now looks like that rumored high-end ZX1 Windows Mobile 6 Professional handset from ASUS is a lock for a CeBIT announcement, though we're going to be totally honest, we're not certain it's worthy of the Lamborghini name. Granted, we've got to withhold judgment until we get one in our hands, but outside of a Lamborghini badge-shaped nav pad and a speedometer-inspired clock on the home screen, we're not seeing anything special about the darned thing. On the plus side, it's a 3G world phone with HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100 and quadband GSM / EDGE, a 3 megapixel autofocus camera out back with a VGA sensor up front for video calling, 256MB of ROM, 128MB of RAM, microSD expansion, GPS, WiFi, and the typical QVGA display. We guess the 13.2mm thick shell is notable, but Lamborghini notable? More on this one as soon as we catch it in the wild.

Gallery: ASUS Lamborghini ZX1 propaganda spotted at CeBIT

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Lamborghini-branded ASUS ZX1 smartphone coming to CeBIT?

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS
Long a tradition in ASUS' notebook line, it seems like the storied Italian marque might be making a fateful move from the lap to the pocket. The rumored ZX1 handset from ASUS is said to be a fairly high-end smartphone -- and frankly, Lamborghini should expect nothing less -- with Windows Mobile 6 Professional, a 520MHz core, integrated GPS, HSDPA, and to loosely translate the French source, "all the colors of the Lamborghini brand." It looks like ASUS will be targeting the Touch crowd with this one, too, thanks to an expansive touchscreen that we'd guess will be at least a bit finger-friendly. If this all checks out, we can expect the ZX1 for about €650 (about $963) this summer following a CeBIT announcement.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

The ASUS "Galaxy Mini" -- slow, but small

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE

It's not nearly as interesting as the mighty M930, but ASUS is prepping another Windows Mobile model that'll appeal to a decidedly different segment of the market. The device, codenamed "Galaxy Mini" and clearly intended to do battle with the HTC Touch, looks to be just about as diminutive as you can realistically expect a WinMo 6.1 Professional device to be -- though the tradeoff is that 3G data doesn't make the cut (you'll have to rely on WiFi for that) and the TI OMAP core mopes along at a molasses-like 200MHz. Other goodies should include GPS, Bluetooth, a 2 megapixel camera, and a selection of colors when it launches for somewhere between 300 and 400 (about $445 to $593) later this year.

[Via the::unwired]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

ASUS M930 in the wild

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Never mind the silly little internal display for just a moment -- the Windows Mobile 6 Standard-based M930 from ASUS is still a pretty interesting phone in a form factor that doesn't come along every day, and it'll likely get scrutinized for purchase by a good many folks in 2100MHz 3G-friendly parts of the globe over the next few months. TamsWMS had the opportunity to touch one at a recent ASUS press event and compare it side-by-side with a variety of other devices; it appears to be roughly the same size as a Treo 680 (pictured), but don't be fooled -- it also makes the chubby Nokia N71 look like a RAZR. Yep, pretty much everything we'd heard about the upcoming M930 from ASUS has turned out to be the real deal, making the brick-like device nearly a dead ringer for Nokia's E90 communicator with Windows Mobile doing the dirty work in place of S60. The exterior nets you a traditional QVGA display and numeric keypad, while unfolding the beast yields a slightly larger 400 x 240 display along with a full QWERTY board. Internal storage clocks in at 256MB with 64MB of RAM, there's a 2 megapixel autofocus cam around back, and you get the usual microSD expansion, WiFi, and Bluetooth. Oddly, the whole package runs Windows Mobile 6 Standard -- not Professional -- so you can just put away any hopes and dreams of touching the display with a stylus. Look for a public reveal at CeBIT in March, so retail availability isn't expected before that.

[Via MoDaCo]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

ASUS M930W running Windows Mobile Standard, not Professional

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Well, this is disheartening. The M930W QWERTY clamshell from ASUS hasn't even been officially announced yet and GPSAndCo -- the guys that brought us the news in the first place -- have revised the rumored specs downward. GPS is apparently missing from the handset (which seems like an absolute travesty in the year 2008), RAM comes in and 64MB instead of 128MB, and the whole package is running Windows Mobile 6 Standard. We sorta could've figured that out from the shots of the device we'd already seen, but still, it's a shame that neither of the M930W's two screens are going to be touchable. Then again, the triband GSM and single-band HSDPA are going to keep our grubby paws off this one anyway.

[Via CoolSmartPhone]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Asus bringing GPS-packing P527 smartphone to US this year

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE

We've always sort of enjoyed the form factor of Asus' P527 GPS-enabled WinMo 6 smartphone, and now it looks like we'll be able to get our hot little hands on one when Asus officially launches the unit in North America sometime early this year. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Asus thinks its first North American handset deserves 3G, so we're still stuck at quadband EDGE, but the built-in WiFi, Bluetooth, and Google Earth GPS integration kinda sorta make up for it -- but we're wait for pricing info to hit before we go looking for our wallets.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

ASUS M530w gets redone in orange

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Doesn't seem quite right to outfit a buttoned-up, all-business phone like the ASUS M530w in such playful colors, but maybe that's exactly why we like it so much. Eschewing the original blacks and grays for oranges and whites, the new version appears to retain everything about the phone that made it so lovable to begin with: HSDPA connectivity, 2 megapixel cam, microSD expansion, full QWERTY, and Windows Mobile 6 (wait, did we just call WinMo 6 "lovable"?). We imagine it'll be every bit as hard to find in the US as it was the first time around, but at least the visuals are a little more entertaining to look at from afar, are they not?

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

ASUS' M930W brings E90 style to Windows Mobile

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, EDGE, EV-DO, HSDPA, UMTS

Right down to the color scheme, pretty much everything about the ASUS' just-leaked M930W is reminding us of Nokia's E90 business superphone, save for one very important detail: this one's running Windows Mobile 6 instead of S60. The specs reveal 3.6Mbps HSDPA, a pretty capable 3.2 megapixel autofocus cam, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, microSDHC slot, 256MB of ROM and 128MB of RAM. That's the good news; the bad is that we're lacking GSM 850 and 3G 850 / 1900 here. What else is new, right? France's GPS&Co has it pegged for a Q1 '08 release at a yet-to-be-determined price.

[Via Unwired View]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Vodafone's v1520 WM6 handset goes for endurance

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Vodafone, Windows Mobile, GSM, EDGE, UMTS
Is it just us, or does this teeny, tiny image bear a striking resemblance to one ASUS P550, a feature-packed Windows Mobile handset that hit the FCC a couple months back? The few specs Vodafone lists on its site for this coming-soon device match up with the aforementioned FCC docs, too, so we'd say it's pretty safe to assume ASUS is the ODM in question here. Anyway, it looks like Voda will be getting this bad boy as the self-branded v1520 -- and while the 3.5 inch screen is pretty hot, the headlining feature seems to be an astounding 12 hours of rated talk time (whether real-world results are anywhere near that remains to be seen). Nedge2k over at Modaco has gotten his grubby mitts on an early release ASUS P750 and declares it a "Kaiser Killer." The P750 and the HTC TyTN II do compare very well on paper -- well at least what we know of the P750 -- and from all reports perform very well in the wild. Of course, the Kaiser Killer moniker stems from the I-can-do-it-all feature-set that this little guy has -- though the QWERTY vs. non-QWERTY will likely squabble about the true king 'til the end of time -- and the lovely form factor it is all shoehorned into. As a refresher the P750 packs GSM / GPRS / HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, SiRFstarIII GPS, 3 megapixel camera, 520 MHz CPU in it's thin and light rubberized package. Sadly, the preview doesn't mention anything about HSDPA frequencies, and that's a potential deal-breaker for many on this side of the world. Expect more info as soon as we can get our hands on it.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Asus debuts GPS-packing P527 smartphone

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, GSM, EDGE

Well, it looks like Asus has finally come though with a follow up to its P526 cellphone / PDA / GPS combo device, although anyone (like us) hoping that it'd make the jump to 3G will likely be sorely disappointed. As before, the new P527 model tops out with quad-band EDGE connectivity, a shortcoming Asus seems to be trying to make up for with added shininess. Otherwise, you can expect the same SiRFStar III GPS chipset that got all the attention last time around, along with built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, an intergrated 2 megapixel camera, an FM radio, and a microSD card slot, with Windows Mobile 6 again running the show. No official word on pricing or availability just yet, but GPSAndCo speculates that it could possibly hit France by the end of the year for about€500 (or just over $700).

[Via Navigadget]

Bonus time must be approaching for the folks over at the FCC as they've been madly busy this week kicking handsets out left, right, and center. Of course, this ASUS P550 took us a bit by surprise, as we'd not heard even a whisper of this little fella until just this morning. Featuring Windows Mobile 6 Pro, a smokin' 570 MHz CPU, GPS, WiFi, triple-band GSM, and a dash of 2100 MHz flavored UMTS, it will slot quite nicely into the middle of Asus' existing lineup. The spec sheet -- and the photo tells no lies -- doesn't mention a forward facing cam, but the unit does feature a 2 megapixel fixed-focus jobbie, with storage for said pics in either the system memory -- listed as 256 MB ROM and 64 MB RAM -- or via miniSD. Not a bad outing for ASUS, and while it lacks HSDPA in any of our favorite bands, it'll do just nicely.

How do we know? The FCC tells us so via the device's filing from one ASUSTek Computer Inc. of Taipei, Taiwan. We can understand shying away from HTC -- maintaining a meaningful business relationship with a company that's whipping your butt competitively can be awkward at best -- but we can't help but wonder what led Palm to turn to an entirely fresh ODM relationship this time around. Was it looking to inject some fresh insight for the 500's creation, or did the order simply go to the lowest bidder? Of course, none of this changes the fact that the handset's me-too design and pedestrian feature set arguably leaves it at a competitive disadvantage before it's even released, but at least we can toss a little sliver of that blame Asus' way this time around.

<a href=https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=405331&fcc_id='MSQ-777'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Mystery Asus does-it-all handset gets a name and a face

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA

Well, the rumored GSM / GPRS / EDGE / HSDPA and every other connectivity option handset from Asus got a face and name today, meet the Asus P750. As an update to our original bit a couple days ago, the handset is actually a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device, not Professional as we had posted. The camera specs are listed as a 3.2 megapixel jobby -- not too shabby huh friends? -- with a potential release date of October this year. With this as the flagship Standard device, we're stoked to see what the Professional iteration might look like. So while you hit the read link to learn more, we'll begin rolling our pennies in anticipation of picking this up as soon as it hits retail.

Rumor has it that Asus has the holy grail of handsets waiting in the wings, in the form of a new -- but as of yet unamed -- P series device. We looked at its littler brother, the P526, at CeBIT this year and griped that it just needed a tweak or two to make it a real contender for Swiss Army knife award for flexibility in a mobile device. The P something sports GSM / GPRS / EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth, runs Windows Mobile 6 pro, packs a SiRF III GPS chip, and has FM radio to boot. We'd get greedy and ask for more, but we're not sure what's left to add.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

Asus and O2 roll out Windows Mobile 6 updates

Filed under: Handsets, Software, ASUS, HTC, O2, Windows Mobile
We're gonna be heartbroken around here once the river of Windows Mobile 6 updates dries up, but until then, just know we never grow tired of this stuff. We can't help but notice that the ASUS V90 does seem to steal a few design cues from its J502 sibling, but rather than hiding its numeric pad underneath the sliding screen, the V90 shows it all with no sliding motions required. Unfortunately, there's not too many details on this one at the moment, but a snapshot of the device taken at Computex shows off its thinness and two-inch TFT display, and it purportedly includes a three-megapixel camera as well. Thankfully, we won't have to wait too terribly long for this one to arrive, as at least some parts of the globe should receive shipments by Q4 of this year.

[Via Slashphone]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Darren Murph

ASUS M530W in pictures and video

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, UMTS

Though it's taken a little heat for me-too styling, the M530W "Aries" from ASUS is still a strong contender in its market segment thanks largely to two key features: Windows Mobile 6 Standard and HSDPA. Ahead of a scheduled July debut, PDAFrance spent some quality time with the device, giving it a thorough rundown in both still and moving pictures. How thorough? The video clocks in at nearly nine minutes; yeah, it's in French, but eye candy is eye candy. If nothing else, it's helpful to see the M530W presented alongside <strike>its inspiration</strike> HTC's Excalibur for the cross-shoppers out there.

[Via Smartphone Thoughts]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

ASUS intros J502 slider

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, GSM, GPRS
Don't be fooled by its impressive spec sheet -- the J502 has nothing but feeble GPRS to keep its data pipeline moving along. That alone is enough to render ASUS' latest slider dead in our eyes, but we'll go through the motions and hit up the otherwise-lovely features anyway: 3 megapixel autofocus cam, 2.4 inch QVGA display, TV out, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (including A2DP), and a rather creative SMS remote control feature that allows the owner to control a variety of functions from afar -- lock, format, call forward, and so on. Of course, if the phone's stolen, we imagine one of the first things on the thief's mind is switching out the SIM, so ya better hurry if you want to wipe it. No word on a release date, but expect the 14.7mm slider in your choice of red and black when it drops.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Say it ain't so: O2 kills Xda Zinc

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, O2, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, UMTS
It's not terribly often that we're here to tell a sob story about a European carrier killing off a hotly-anticipated handset prior to release, but alas, it does seem to happen from time to time. Such is the case here, where O2 first delayed the ASUS-supplied Xda Zinc -- a rather delicious Windows Mobile QWERTY slider, if we do say so ourselves, replete with 3G data -- and now has apparently deep-sixed it entirely, claiming it wasn't up to snuff with its "testing requirements." To be fair, O2's Xda line of Windows Mobile-based devices is deep and wide enough to accommodate nearly any user's needs, Zinc or no, so we're not going to be sending any flowers or cards expressing our condolences. If anything, ASUS might be the one needing consolation here, with the Zinc possibly proving to be a breakout handset for the company in Europe's white-hot smartphone market.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

ASUS: the rest of the bunch at CeBIT

Filed under: Handsets, Peripherals, ASUS, GSM, GPRS, HSDPA

We've gotta say, Asus made a pretty decent showing at CeBIT this year. We covered the new releases and rocked 'em for you yesterday -- now here's the best of the rest. The Z801 is a high-end tri-band device that has been given the super-style treatment by Asus. The screen is sapphire crystal, the handset is lovingly accented with leather, and a dash of chrome is thrown in for good measure. Features include Bluetooth (A2DP and AVRCP lovingly included), a 2 megapixel cam, and a gee-whiz Karaoke feature that allows you to wail along with your favorite songs while seeing your speech converted to text on the screen. We also bumped into the C1000 3.5G HSDPA data card -- this thing is sick (and that's saying something for a fricking data card) thanks to quad-band GSM, triple-band WCDMA, and phone call / SMS / MMS management. No word on pricing for the C1000, but it sounds like something we could use, like, right away. Check the shots on the following page.

ASUS had the Aries on the show floor and we just couldn't resist asking it to say "cheese" and give us a big smile. Reminiscent of devices like the HTC Excalibur and just about every Blackberry, the M530w has a full QWERTY keyboard for your typing pleasure, a huge d-pad and scroll wheel for Blackberry-style play. For connectivity, this half inch thick wonder has triple-band (900 / 1800 / 1900) GSM, 2100 MHz (can you feel the pain? can ya?) UMTS / HSDPA, and of course EDGE. What self-respecting Windows Mobile 6 powered device would be complete without WiFi and Bluetooth to round out a fairly sweet set of features. As a bonus, the placard boasts that the 2 megapixel camera can add contacts using a "business card recognition function" -- cool beans. Click yonder linky to get a peek at its other sides.

ASUS launched a new PDA / cellphone / GPS combo monster yesterday, so say "hello" to the non-3G ASUS P526 "Pegasus." We feel like we keep missing the holy grail of smartphones by a hair -- we can only hope the next arrival in the family will fill that 3G shortfall. The new kid on the block from ASUS does pack quite a kick otherwise, with quad-band EDGE connectivity, WiFi, 2 megapixel camera, and all of that loaded into a 115 gram package. The P526 sports a scroll wheel on the left side for easy one-handed control, and we are lovin' the GPS in the form of the SiRFStar III chipset, but saldly no word on bundled software in the deal. Since this is a new handset, we expected Windows Mobile 6 Professional and ASUS didn't disappoint on that front. Check the gallery for more shots of this little wonder.
Alas, the Aura was supposedly a design prototype ordered by ASUS from Hungarian design company Egy Studio. The problem is that ASUS claims the entire Aura handset is, well, a complete fake. If so, why are official-looking images of the device posted on Egy Studio's website? This makes little sense except for ASUS possibly trying to take back information on a leaked prototype that, umm, exists at the website of an alleged design partner of the Taiwanese company. We'd all love to see this killer Aura concept come to life -- but maybe it's just not to be after all.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Brian White

Pre-installed Opera to come on some WM6 devices?

Filed under: Software, ASUS, HTC, Motorola, Windows Mobile, Misc, Toshiba
We never thought we would live to see the day that Pocket IE was pushed aside hastily by some Windows Mobile users in favor of the Opera browser. In the "fat lady sings" department that is in rumorland at the moment, the CEO of Opera has flat-out stated that some WM6 handsets will have the Opera browser pre-installed. Eek, say it isn't so! Either we're dreaming a lovely dream, or phone manufacturers are finally starting to embrace the concept of tri-band UMTS; for the sake of speed-loving Americans everywhere, we're hoping it's the latter. The "Aries" from ASUS will come bearing all the sweet, sweet fruits of Windows Mobile 6 Standard (that's like Smartphone, for you WM5-toting gals and gents) combined with UMTS on the 850, 1900, and 2100MHz bands for global coverage. Other features include a true scroll wheel (none of that Excalibur-style touch strip action here), 2 megapixel camera, front facing secondary cam for video calls, 520MHz XScale processor, and -- in the event you couldn't deduce it from the pictures -- a QWERTY keypad. We're told the Aries clocks in just a hair wider and thicker than the Excalibur, and if we're going to get global 3G in exchange, well, we're just fine with that. If in-the-flesh shots of phones aren't your thing, peep a decidedly more conceptual view of the Aries after the break!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

ASUS shows far-out "Aura" concept phone

Ahh, to be an industrial concept designer, free of the binding chains we call "reality." You know -- absolute limits of technological advancement, laws of physics, corporate red tape, and the like. Must be nice, right? You can go ahead and design a phone for yourself (or even better, for ASUS) that meets virtually every dreamy spec requirement you can conjure. Go ahead, drop a 3.9-inch touch screen that eats up the entire surface of that bad boy. While you're at it, throw in a sliding d-pad bar that can be positioned anywhere along the screen. Oh, and don't forget the HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, and microSD expansion, all in a 6mm thick shell that magically reveals a full keyboard stowed in a slot along the left edge. And yes, that's a full 0.1 millimeter thicker than Samsung's Ultra Edition 5.9, but don't even think about drawing a comparison (except for the fact that the Samsung actually exists, we suppose).

[Via Mobile-review and Unwired View, thanks Staska]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

ASUS announces P735 with 3G

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile, GSM, GPRS, UMTS

If only ASUS made that GPS-packin' P535 with a 3G radio... well, by George, they do! (Sorta.) The P735 takes the P535's winning formula (for folks that consider a keyboardless design a "winning formula," anyway) but trades GPS for some glorious UMTS data in a 19mm-thick package. Other features include 256MB of onboard Flash, 2 megapixel primary and VGA front-facing cams, 802.11b / g, Bluetooth 2.0, and miniSD expansion. Conspicously missing from the spec sheet, though, are Crossbow and any form of 3G usable this side of the pond. Since then, more intel has been uncovered for the Nokia 6600 lookalike. It turns out that the device runs Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC, sports a 2 megapixel shooter, and has GPS. It's possible that it may come stateside as there is no 3G radio on this badboy. Still no word on whether or not it will have expandable memory or just how much onboard memory will be available, but we'll assume there's going to be something to differentiate it in the growing sea of Pocket PC devices.

[Via Unwiredview, thanks Staska]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Michael Caputo

ASUS reveals Pegasus Pocket PC phone

Filed under: Handsets, ASUS, Windows Mobile
There's not a whole lot of details to go on here, but it looks like the iF Design Awards got the first look at ASUS's latest Pocket PC phone, with the Unwired View blog spotting these two pics of the candybar-style handset. Dubbed Pegasus (a throwback to the origin of the company's name), the phone appears to be a slightly slimmed down revision to ASUS's P525 smartphone, measuring in at a mere 0.6 inches thick while still packing built-in GPS and a camera of unspecified megapixels. Otherwise, about all that's known about the device is that it's Windows Mobile-based, has a full numeric keypad and jog dial, and supposedly has a brushed aluminum finish and diamond-cut edges, although it's tough to discern that from the pics. For the rest of the specs, not to mention details on pricing or availability, it looks like we'll just to wait for a more official announcement.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Donald Melanson
