We've learned from a source close to the project that Motorola is planning on rolling out a bone conduction headset "this summer" based on Nextlink's technology. This totally jibes with recent news that Moto and Nextlink had partnered up -- and furthermore, that the long-overdue Invisio Q7 would be straight up Moto branded by the time it actually hit store shelves -- and sure enough, the photo we've been provided certainly looks like a Q7 in Moto clothing. We don't have anything else solid at this point, but we're told that the headset performs brilliantly in windy conditions, a common complaint for Jawbone owners. Motorola, Nextlink, whomever, we don't really care what this thing is called, we're just happy to hear we'll finally have it out in the next few months.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

HTC Touch Diamond dock stealthily makes the scene

We're already big fans of the Touch Diamond's sleek black aesthetic, and it looks like the design language is going to carry over to the official accessories, like the dock. Yeah, it's just a dock with a USB connector and a headphone jack so you can listen to music while charging / syncing your phone, but it's definitely one of the slickest form factors we've seen -- too bad it's listed at £25 ($49).

[Via Tracy and Matt's Blog]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

Aliph Jawbone 2 exposed

So there are a couple of big complaints about Aliph's otherwise-lauded Jawbone noise canceling Bluetooth headset: one, it's rather porky, and two, the charge connector is about as reliable as a Comcast installation appointment. Hang tight, though, because help is on the way -- help in the form of the Jawbone 2. The new model just broke through the FCC's surly bonds in full visual glory, showing a headset that maintains the distinctive industrial design of the original while getting just a bit smaller and adopting a new connector that looks moderately less sketchy. The last thing we all want to do is blow another hundred on the next best headset, but if this means we can run a teleconference standing next to a freight train traveling 40 miles per hour and do it in style, count us in.

<a href=http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=738271&fcc_id='V3J-JB2'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Lamborghini offers Bluetooth headset that doesn't break the bank

If you're not in the market -- or don't have the spare cake -- for your own Lamborghini, perhaps a Bluetooth headset featuring the bull logo might do? Lamborghini's founder's son, Tonino Lamborghini, has seemingly stepped into the design world by crafting a Bluetooth headset but ignored the time honored tradition of over charging. For $70 you get 6 hours of talk time, 160 hours standby time, the lovely charging bull logo, all in a pretty tiny 9-gram package. So if any of you are off to pick up a new Lambo this week, make sure you remind the dealer you expect one of these little guys free with your purchase.

[Via Engadget Spain]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

The Motorola Z9's amazing, exciting accessories in the wild

Probably not worth rushing out to a store for, but some AT&T retail locations are starting to receive stock of the upcoming Motorola Z9's incredible batch of accessories. So, you know, if for whatever reason you were still holding out an irrational belief that the Z9 doesn't exist, this is probably the straw that breaks the camel's back right here. Now, let's just hope that we get something to actually put in the holster any minute now. Since looking around your car to read a small display while you're driving seems like a somewhat poor plan, Sony Ericsson has introduced the HCB-150 that clips to a visor and reads out the caller's name with a (hopefully non-creepy) text-to-speech engine in addition to a more traditional OLED readout if you simply must take your eyes off the road. It supports up to five pairings, uses Bluetooth 2.0, is battery powered for double duty as a portable speakerphone, and should be available next quarter.

[Via PHONE Magazine]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

AT&T offers **free Option GT Ultra and GT Ultra Express HSUPA cards (**must sell soul)

Check it data fans, AT&T just announced a pair of new HSUPA LaptopConnect cards from Option. The GT Ultra goes type II PCMCIA while the GT Ultra Express is, you guessed it, destined for ExpressCard34 slots. Both cards are tri-band UMTS/HSPA 850/1900/2100MHz and quad-band GPRS/EDGE capable for BroadbandConnect speeds of about 600Kbps to 1.4Mbps on the way down or 500Kbps to 800Kbps back up the tubes. Those bands should get your suit connected in some 140 countries spanning the US, Europe, Japan and Korea. The cards are Mac and PC compatible and will set you back <strike>$50</strike> 0$ (for a limited time starting tomorrow) plus a two year contract of at least $60 per month. The matchbook-size dongle receives a Bluetooth signal from your compatible 'Berry, and then pushes the audio out a standard 1/8-inch jack. According to the retail description, the device is also capable of streaming tunes from your stereo to a pair of Bluetooth headphones, which would mean that we are in fact looking at an A2DP profile here and thus likely compatibility with non-BlackBerry devices. Anyone wanna do us a solid and test this out with a WinMo phone?

[Via The Boy Genius Report]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Evan Blass

Zeemote JS1 brings analog gaming to your Bluetooth-enabled handset

Filed under: Games, Features, Peripherals, Accessories

We had an opportunity to play with Zeemote's -- this name is somehow familiar -- JS1 mobile joystick at MWC this week and while we first thought it a bit kitschy, it's actually a pretty amazing little device. Zeemote supplies an API to game developers and in short order -- apparently anyway -- the game can adapted to use the Bluetooth-enabled JS1as a controller. The device features an analog joystick and four user configurable triggers for control in a really comfortable controller that is small enough to pop into a pocket when not being used. The best bit is that it's not a gimmick, it works, and really well. We checked out the Heli game shown in the picture above and the JS1 really made the game fun to play. Games such as Tomb Raider, Hellstrike 3D, and Sonic have already been ported and we hope more to come, no word on pricing but we're not expecting this to be a pricey toy. Hit the gallery for pics and read on for some video footage

[Thanks to Ohad from Mobile Game Developer for the vid]

Gallery: Zeemote JS1 brings analog gaming to your Bluetooth-enabled handset

Continue reading Zeemote JS1 brings analog gaming to your Bluetooth-enabled handset

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sean Cooper

HTC, Parrot come clean with their love for one another

Filed under: Peripherals, HTC, Others, Accessories

We though the whole idea behind Bluetooth was to create a universally compatible, short-range wireless protocol, but apparently that's not enough of a guarantee for HTC. The ruling patron saint of Windows Mobile devices has teamed up with Parrot, a rather large European manufacturer of Bluetooth accessories, to "align product roadmaps" in an effort to make their products more harmonious in each others' presence. All told, the announcement is rather vague, with the most telling line saying that the partnership will bring "expanded capabilities" to users' devices, whatever that means. HTC doesn't have much of a retail presence in the Bluetooth peripheral market, so could this be a prelude to an acquisition?
The IXI mobile Ogo CT-25 features a gimmicky -- but undeniably cool -- area on the hinge where they've left space to clip on one of a small pile of attachments. The list currently features the Handset OC-HS1, a wireless handset that clips on your shirt and uses the Ogo to charge, extending a small slider answers an incoming call and the reverse hangs up. Need blink? IXI also has the Lights OC-LT1, a multicolored LED light that can be configured to flash for different events, with different colors used for distinguish between say a text and an email. Also up on the site is the Stream OC-ST1, a Bluetooth headset that can be used with the Ogo for calls and streaming music. Last up -- yeah, we've saved the strangest for last -- is the Bottle Opener OC-BO1 (we're not making this stuff up) a, simple aluminum bottle opener that, umm, opens bottles. All of the powered devices use the Ogo as a charging station so they're ready whenever you need em, the other uses your lips and beverage of choice . No word on street date or pricing, but we're strangely drawn into the world of the Ogo now that they've brought all this nifty Kung-Fu to the table. Damn you IXI mobile!

Just when you think you've reached the apex of your iPhone's capability, there comes another accessory-maker, modder, or developer to prove you wrong. One new feature comes in the form of a piece of software for Jailbroken iPhones (or touches) called PocketGuitar. The premise of this software is simple -- it allows you to "play" the phone like an actual instrument, as well as strum along to your stored music -- thus fulfilling a number of twisted, rock-nerd fantasies. When you're done perfecting a version of "Frankenstein," you can use your phone to stalk your estranged lover... provided you're using Conice's 6 x 18 zoom attachment for the phone, a hideous plastic beast that snaps onto your normally trim device. Hey, no one ever said stalking was going to be easy.

[Via Mobilewhack]

Read - Virtual Guitar for iPhone and iPod touch
Read - Conice 6x18 Zoom Attachment for iPhone

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Contact lens could offer heads-up display for your cellphone

Some clever <strike>geeks</strike> souls at the University of Washington have used some pretty serious tech to allow themselves to make a flexible and safe -- don't they always tell us that? -- contact lens with a built-in circuit and lights. We've seen more efficient ways of piping tunes from phones to stereos, but admittedly, they usually involve a wire or two. The Venturi Mini, now being offered by Verizon Wireless, performs the wondrous feat of receiving music streamed to it via stereo Bluetooth and relaying it on to your car's head unit by way of FM transmitter, making the whole process completely wire-free. "But wait," as they say in the industry, "that's not all." The cigarette lighter socket-powered device doubles as a handsfree that cleverly pauses your music when the time comes to take a call. Grab the multitalented wonder now for $129.99 -- and if you live in Washington or Oregon, the sooner, the better.

[Via MobileBurn]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Is Nokia pondering magnetic ports for some handsets?

Some Nokia sets feature similar-sized headset and charging jacks and in an effort to help owners quickly tell them apart -- and prevent potential damage to the handset -- Nokia may have decided on a bit of clever gadgetry to save the day. The idea is dead-simple, one port will be positively magnetized, the other negatively, so if you try to plug in your cables to the wrong place they will repel.
Jabra launched this sleek thing at CES this week, with a body crafted from Titanium and glossy black accents, it is definitely looking the business. This new offering was designed by Jacob Jensen, the same fella who created Jabra's JX10 headset -- though this venture has way less gold. The device's specs are posted as having up to 6-hour talk time, Bluetooth 2.0, auto pairing, USB charging -- this is a must in our opinion -- a couple ear hooks , and a goodly assortment of ear gels. Though, with an MSRP of $179, we're thinking this will find its way onto a limited collection of ears.

[Via PhoneArena]

Bose already has a wired attachment for its QuietComfort 3 noise canceling headphones, but unsightly wires aren't really befitting a mobile warrior in the 21st century, now are they? Thanks to the FCC's loose lips we know that Bose is patching up that little indiscretion with the QuietComfort 3 Bluetooth Communications Kit that simply replaces the last mile of the kit between the module and the phone with a Bluetooth connection. Of course, that still leaves a cable running from the module up to the cans, which sticks you with a grand total of two distinct wires coming off your head -- not to mention a healthy sized boom running down to your piehole. We'd have preferred they worked on making this end wireless instead, but hey, what can you do? No word on pricing or a release date yet, since the FCC really isn't into that level of detail.

Update: Our bad, it turns out Bose routes the music audio through the same cable as the phone audio, so you end up just a little less silly looking than we'd originally thought.
We wandered past OtterBox during our aimless CES march and they had a couple fine cases on display so we just had to pop in for a look see.
As mentioned a couple days ago, Motorola pushed out a pretty minor revision to its S9 stereo Bluetooth wraparound headset. We bumped into one while wandering the booth and snapped a few pics of it before it wandered away.
Nice kit, though we question if this really is every woman's must-have handbag accessory. The Sony Ericsson HBH-PV712's pack-ins include two interchangeable style-up covers, a unique lanyard as necklace, handsome travel bag, and a charger. The set itself features 15 hour talk time, 500 hours of standby time, weighs 14 grams, and DSP with fast automatic volume adjustment. Here's hoping they release a Man's man version with an NHL Hockey motif, packed in a semi-ruined mini gym bag -- including all the required dirt and stains -- and scented with the finest meat and potatoes.

Motorola launched a slick headset today as a follow up to the original MOTOACTV S9 we saw this time last year. Form looks unchanged on this outing, but Moto has opted to add high-definition sound with SRS WOW HD and fixed the issue we had with background noise by improving the earbuds. Battery life is touted as 6 hours of play time on a single charge -- but of course your mileage will vary -- and weighs in at a measly one ounce. If you've been looking to upgrade your current sweat damaged S9 set, this may well be a worthy upgrade for you.

Sony's finally getting really, really serious about the Memory Stick. The company is launching a hefty 16GB version of its loved / hated MS Duo. There's not much else. It's a Memory Stick Duo. It's 16GB. It will be available in March for $300. Enjoy.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

Philips launches SHB9000 Bluetooth headset

Philips's claim that its new SHB9000 headset offers the best-ever music and conversation quality from a Bluetooth headset might be a bit optimistic, but it's their PR, so we'll let 'em say what they want. The over-the-ear headphones offer native MP3 decoding for loss-less streaming, 40mm neodymium speakers and can automatically switch between calls and music. There's a digital signal processor to filter out background noise and echo when on the phone, and you can connect to your phone wirelessly or via a provided cord. We're not quite sure what the difference in SKUs is, but Philips is offering this one in the Spring for $99 and $129 "respectively."

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

MOGO Wireless signal booster claims to bag bars for your phone

Ladies and gentlemen -- having connection trouble with your mobile phone? Wishing for more, more, and still more bars in your tiny little LCD display? Well, perhaps the good people at MOGO (not to be confused with Newton, the MoGo mouse-makers) might be able to help. The company has recently introduced a wireless cellular signal amplifier which claims to step up your 800MHz and 1900MHz signals into the stratosphere. Your hard-spent $149 will supposedly garner you an extra two bars and fewer dropped calls on your AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Alltel, or Verizon phone. In our humble experience, you can't really bet on a magic solution for improved signal strength, short of purchasing your mobile provider outright, investing in new towers, then making sure they end up close to your favorite hang-out spots... which we've done a number of times.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Joshua Topolsky

BlueAnt unveils voice-controlled V1 Bluetooth headset

Anyone who's used the stylish, compact, voice-isolating Z9 Bluetooth headset from BlueAnt knows that while the unit itself performs satisfactorily, remembering the thousand and one unintuitive button combinations (three-second push to end a call?) can be a real pain in the ass. Well thankfully for fans of that somewhat flawed product, the Australian manufacturer will be back as CES with yet another dual-mic model, the V1, which drops the Z9's awkward input method in favor of almost complete voice control. The so-called BlueGenie Voice User Interface promises to operate the full suite of headset functions with the use of but a single activation button, which -- if it can actually work in real-world situations -- should definitely help give this new model a leg (or six -- ha) up on the competition. Stay tuned to our CES coverage for more details, along with pricing and release info.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Evan Blass

Celio's REDFLY platform enables Foleo-like WinMo devices

It's not that we don't see the appeal of using a supplementary keyboard and display with our smartphones, rather, we simply felt that the Foleo was way overpriced for the relatively limited functionality it provided. Well now a new company called Celio seems to be heading down the same risky path as Palm, announcing the REDFLY Smartphone Interface System, a platform that allows Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices to be controlled using external hardware; sounds promising, except that the first piece of gear to incorporate the technology will cost $499, the same targeted MSRP as the failed Foleo (after its planned instant rebate). Celio wisely claims that it's initially targeting enterprise users with the Bluetooth 2.0, clamshell device, although frankly it seems like they'd have more success concentrating on the software and letting OEMs deal with designing products that offer a more attractive price / performance ratio.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Evan Blass

The Invader Scarf: too geek for chic

If you're carrrying around a Mobiado Luminoso cell phone, it's a safe bet you might be interested in Bissol's brass-encased 4GB flash drives -- so why not jack the ritz factor by combining them in Mobiado's new battery cover for the Luminoso, which features a storage / display compartment for the included drive? That's right -- Mobiado asked itself what its customers wanted, and came up with a custom battery cover that only holds an opulent brass flash drive. Damn, we knew we weren't exactly the target market, but you'd think they'd at least try to go quadband first.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

KYE's Genius BT-03i Bluetooth headset rocks touch control

It may not be the prettiest Bluetooth headset we've ever seen -- or the second prettiest, or the third -- but the Genius BT-03i has a little ace up its sleeve that most headsets don't: touch control. As you might expect, the touch sensitive strip is used to control volume during a call, while a lighted icon serves as a warning to others, "leave me the frick alone, I'm on the phone here." The headset's innovative enough to have been mentioned as an honoree for the CES 2008 Innovations Awards, and at the $79 asking price, it might just be worth checking out. Perhaps the sleeper of this week's announcements out of Nokia's aptly named Nokia World event, the WH-600 and WH-700 headsets kick it old school by eschewing Bluetooth for good, old-fashioned, reliable wires. They've got all the bases covered, too: the WH-600 goes on the ear while the WH-700 is a traditional bud style, offering three different cup sizes in the box. Both can be used for music and calls alike -- obviously -- and include 3.5mm jack adapters for use with any ol' music player you like. Get them both starting in January; €65 (about $96) for the WH-600 and €50 (about $74) for the buds.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

The finger, improved: Pogo Stylus answers iPhone's unasked question

We kinda thought that the iPhone's interface was designed to be used and mastered without so much as a fleeting moment of longing for a pointing implement -- once you get past the keyboard's growing pains, anyway -- but we suppose the automatic mental association between touchscreens and styli can be a tough one to break. Enter Ten One Design's meticulously engineered $24.95 Pogo Stylus, which the firm says functions "like a fingertip" to integrate seamlessly with the finger-friendly UI used throughout the iPhone and iPod touch. Imagine that! What's more, it's manufactured from aluminum alloy in your choice of three stylish colors, which is awesome news since it's prominently featured on your iPhone's side in a custom holster. If only Ten One had put a screw top on this thing so that we could fill it with pixie dust, whiskey, or $25 in shredded US currency, we'd be in.

[Via iAnything]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Bluetrek unveils the Sense touch-sensitive Bluetooth headset

Although we've certainly seen our share of glitz in the Bluetooth headset market, thankfully several manufacturers have realized that the less noticed a headset is, the better -- and Bluetrek's new Sense headset seems as low-key as any. The piano black device features a touch-sensitive talk button, voice alerts for common functions like redialing and pairing, voice dialing, and a detachable thin support wire designed for glasses-wearers. At £49 ($100), it's not necessarily the deal of the century, but it'll definitely stack up well against similarly austere headsets when it goes on sale early next year.

[Via Pocket-lint]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nilay Patel

SIM card gadget backs-up and copies on the cheap

We know what you're pondering this fine Thursday morning: how can I most effectively put my body in danger while sustaining full dorkiness? All those "action sports" like flipping motorcycles and skiing through avalanches are just way too glamorous. Well, your answer has arrived in the GroundSurf board from Ratleads. The three-wheeled board has an electric motor, and a unique control scheme that allows you to speed and slow the board using touch controls on an HTC phone over Bluetooth. What could possibly go wrong? The board will be out "soon" for somewhere in the neighborhood of two grand.

[Via Pocket-lint]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Paul Miller

Iqua's Sun, the solar-powered Bluetooth headset

Bluetooth headsets are one of those accessories that need to work well and stay the hell out of your way, and often times remembering to charge them (in addition to your phone) is a real drag. Incoming from the ridiculously obvious department: Iqua's solar-powered Bluetooth headset. We're not sure how much solar charging is an order to combat the energy stresses of use (or whether this thing for sure has a battery -- although we can't imagine why it wouldn't), but one less minuscule gadget to worry about charging is just fine by us. Tucked deep in the darkest recesses of the press release for Sony Ericsson's K660 candybar, it turns out, lies a little diamond in the rough: the HBH-PV703 Bluetooth headset. Alright, calling it a diamond in the rough might be just a little lofty -- it certainly doesn't look like anything special, after all -- but the company is looking to call some attention to its rather impressive 10 hours of talk time and 350 hours of standby. It's Bluetooth 2.0 compatible and offers up auto-pairing capability, awesome for those incapable of remembering the "0000" that a good 80 percent of headsets on the market use. It'll hit in the first quarter of next year in grey or black; price hasn't been announced and will vary by region, but we're guessing this one lies on the lower end of Sony Ericsson's headset spectrum.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Motorola launches MOTOPURE H12 Bluetooth headset

As we'd heard hinted at in the past, Motorola has unveiled its new and glitzy MOTOPURE -- these names are getting so old -- H12 Bluetooth headset. We like that Motorola has included a charging base plus a small carrying case that doubles as both charger and protective case for when not in use. As an added kindness, they've also thrown in a few ear cushions to make your wearing experience a pleasant one. Wow, we'd darned near forgotten about this thing. Remember the Invisio Q7, Nextlink's hot little bone conduction number from mid '06 that was promised for delivery by the end of the year? Yeah, it never showed up -- until now. It may not be for sale just yet, but at least a few folks at the FCC have had a chance to check it out (ick, we hope they changed earbuds as they passed it around), giving us hope that it'll finally show up in stores in time for the holidays. The $200 price point still puts a sour taste in our mouths, but considering how much smaller it looks than the similarly-spec'd Jawbone, it may end up being worth every penny.

<a href=http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=274790&fcc_id='QNY105'>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Chris Ziegler

Motorola announces music-centric T505 carkit

It seems only fitting that Motorola would announce its latest in-car solution when the largest automotive accessory extravaganza -- SEMA -- is starting its 2007 show. Motorola's MOTOROKR T505 Bluetooth carkit combines handsfree calling, A2DP support, and an FM transmitter which allows music and phone calls to be streamed over Bluetooth and played through the car's speaker system.
