Nokia's Surge official on AT&T, ships July 19 for $79.99
We've known about Nokia's so-called Surge for months now, but at long last, AT&T has done its duty by making things official and giving us a price and release date to consider. The Symbian S60-based smartphone is aimed squarely at social media freaks, boasting a full QWERTY keyboard, a browser with Flash support (imagine that, right?), a pre-installed JuiceCaster app for easily updating your Facebook / Twitter status and a price tag that's sure to turn heads. For just $79.99 after rebate, you'll also get a 2 megapixel camera, AT&T Navigator, AT&T Video Share and the pleasure of handing over at least $30 per month for a required data plan (if you want the $50 rebate, anyway). If you're sold already, you can get yours on July 19th.

OMG I can't wait to ditch my N97 to go get one of these!!!!!!!
Not. What the hell was Nokia thinking designing this? I thought they were done making goofy looking phones in the 90's. What an embarassment. There's no reason why anybody wouldn't choose an Impression or a Zenon over this even if it is a smartphone. The idea for this phone is something Nokia should have in its product line, but the execution is way off.

Unless Nokia and AT&T are teaming up to make sure that sales reps are strongly trained in S60, I don't see the point of this phone. And considering that S60 as we know it is likely to be replaced within the next year, I can't imagine that the two parties are actually doing that.

I think that for this price you can sneak S60 under the nose of someone looking for "just a phone" and still focus on the social networking aspects. Then, maybe as he's fiddling around one day, he discovers the power of a whole OS that his normal feature phone couldn't match.

Hey, they put the spacebar in its proper place!

It would be better if:
1) It had a FULL qwerty keyboard (ie. one with a number row), instead of the non-full qwerty keyboard (despite engadget double-speak)
2) It ran Maemo (or even Android)
3) Tilt screen
4) 4.1" 800x480 screen
5) Had Quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE and Quintband UMTS (Euro, AT&T/NAM, T-Mo-USA)
6) dual SIM cards
(getting slightly more fanciful with each one)

think you missed the point there john, it's a phone designed for at&t, and look at the price tag
john @ Jul 13th 2009 1:57PM
Fernando: that doesn't change that those things would make it better. Suggesting changes doesn't mean I don't understand their target product niche.

darn... I was hoping that this wouldnt be a smartphone. It's ugly and funky enough that no business man would use this... it's designed for a younger crowd, with all the "social networking" aspects, so I dont think it's going to sell well with a $30/month data plan... if a 20something can afford that, then they probably already have 2-3 iphones.
Now if they ditched the data plan and just had it as a s60 feature phone like the 6650, then I bet it would sell well. I might still just get it under my son's account, and then use it with my sim and the cheaper family data plans :)

from the press release:
"Designed in the U.S.[...]" said David Petts, etc
it figures, lol.
Douglas @ Jul 13th 2009 6:37PM
They should fire everybody involved at their California design studio.
youngcalihottie @ Jul 16th 2009 7:31PM
you can totally tell
it doesnt look anything like a "real" nokia
i actually kinda like it. im gonna check it out on launch day.
but i still think its ridiculous to have a USA design team.
i think we almost all will agree... ...can we just get the real f'n nokia phones from nokia proper?!
Ed @ Jul 14th 2009 10:06PM
i'll take it for free.. the 6650 is free nowadays.
