Samsung Galaxy now available from O2 Germany

The big Android news today is all out of London and New York today, but if we move a bit eastward, there's some cool stuff going on in Deutschland, too: Samsung's i7500 Galaxy is now available. The beastly smartphone immediately becomes the highest-end Android device to date and will have a little while to enjoy the top of the hill until the Hero drops, thanks in no small part to its 5 megapixel cam, support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA, 8GB of internal storage, and a 3.2-inch AMOLED display. Looks like it's yours for €69.99 (about $98) on contract, so count us in -- and how about some time on the Nürburgring while we're at it?

By far the best Android hardware device available. I can only hope it doesn't take until 2012 for T-Mo USA to pick this up :(

Gotta love it when samsung rains on htc hero's big day to compete for our attention :)

Both htc hero and samsung galaxy seem like good choices; the latter would have been great if not for the old Qualcomm MSM7200A 528 MHz...

Remember guys: first one to sell a tegra / android device will have my cash !

If I was to purchase a Hero or Galaxy unlocked from an importer (they are already popping up with pre-orders online) would I be able to use the phone on my T-Mobile plan with the G1 internet package? What problems would I face? Could I still get software updates? would I have localization issues like german text or unable to reach US websites or something?

I unlocked my first gen iPhone and am using it on T-Mobile without any issues (except for visual voicemail, but I don't like messages anyhow) but I don't know what a different region unlock would entail.

I've never thought about it until I saw these two phones and noticed how outdated of a device the MyTouch 3G really is. Were getting the shaft on these android phones.

The way I see it, if I'm going to pay $200 for a new phone on a contract, whats another $300 or $400 for the phone I want, minus the contract?

So wait. I'm unclear why the Hero is higher end than the Galaxy. AMOLED and 8gb of internal storage seem higher end than what I've seen of the Hero. AMOLED is beautiful, and 8gb is bigger than the the approx 500mb I saw of the Hero. Fill me in cus looking at specs side by side on Phone Arena isn't my G1s strong suit. I must be missing something.

I think they are very comparable to eachother. I know the Hero has a little more memory and it has a built in compass that the galaxy lacks. Other than that, it's going to get down to personal preference. I'll take either one over the android phones announced for the US..

It's almost perfect, but my Magic has 288MB RAM or over twice as much as this device (128MB) so that's quite disappointing and won't make me jealous.

@zender: Yes my Magic has 288MB, 198 of which are available to Android and apps - the box even says 288MB. You may confuse the Magic with the Vodafone and T-mobile myTouch branded crap floating around which has only 192MB, 99 of which are available to Android and apps.

This phone looks great and I would go out and buy it right away if it wasn't for the RAM and CPU specs. I have a G1 and I love android, but when you start installing alot of apps and have some widgets running the phone really starts becoming slow and unresponsive. This worries me about the low RAM and CPU. I love HTC's sense UI, but the Hero's specs aren't much better than the G1's and I worry that all that UI will really make the phone unusable after you throw a couple of apps on it and have some backround processes running. The Magic isn't any better. I hope to see something soon from HTC with considerablly higher RAM and CPU running the Sense UI. I love the G1 keyboard, but lets be honest....the phone is a friggin brick. I have been using the onscreen keyboard on the G1 and find it very usable, so much so that I would be willing to get a touch screen only android phone. Hopefully we'll see something soon that makes us all go WOW!

I am currently on the at&t 3g iphone network and I am contemplating buying an unlocked htc magic G2 ion from ebay the vodafone version. I am worried that I will not be able to perform the android firmware updates if I do buy a phone that is unlocked. Does anyone know the answer to my question? Any kind of help would be appreciated.
