Toshiba's TG01 running Snapdragon launched as T-01A in Japan

One of the hottest pieces of gear this year just made its way to retail in Japan. Less than a centimeter thick, the NTT DoCoMo T-01A is the same TG01 device revealed by Toshiba back in February running Qualcomm's ultra-fast 1GHz Snapdragon chipset. As such, our far east brethren can lay claim to that 4.1-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) resistive touchscreen display; HSDPA, GPS, and WiFi radios; and Toshiba's custom-built UI meant to mask its Windows Mobile 6.1 core with a bit of Rothko misdirection. And now that Toshiba's home country of Japan is all set, we hope to see the TG01 make its launch debute in Europe and beyond.

win mo does need a faster processor than its competitors and doesnt have quite as smooth transitions.. But oh man it is more powerful than all of the others combined.. Hit me up when you can emulate android or stream off hulu or quicksilverscreen dot com....

Yes, you ARE an IDIOT! It's a custom interface pasted on top of Winmo STUPID! Why do we give freedom to MORONS in this country?
suprsonic @ Jun 22nd 2009 8:59AM
I could careless its a Winmo powered device. It's cool what they are doing to customize the look and feel of the OS to better compete with other touch enabled handsets.

I saw this one here in France, it's a very impressive device !! the thing is really really thin, a lot more when it's in your hands than what you think of it looking at pictures.
Let's see when Toshiba will sell it in Europe. Can't wait to see it with WinMo 6.5 !!

another i-comment from an i-moron...
why is it similar to an i-phone? let's see...
the chrome bezel? no
the touch screen? not an iphone exclusive
the unit design? rounded corners are not an iphone trademark, and it is flat on the back and has front buttons, in a completely different layout
proportions? no, come on
ui interface? not at all, don't dare to tell otherwise, finger based interfaces are not exclusive from apple nor they were the first company to use them, only the most successful one at doing so.
so WHY is it similar? your coment sounds like an i-fart to me

I looked for this in Shinjuku today, and couldn't find it. Docomo's website states the T-01A has been temporarily pulled off the market due to a confirmed software issue preventing the phone from connecting to numbers starting in "011".
Sucks, it looks awesome. I'd been looking forward to fiddling around with it.

Sorry, incomplete information.
According to the full press release, a firmware update will be distributed to users who have already purchased the phone, and sales will re-commence on the 28th.
2.600 phones have been sold so far.
The numbers in question belong to households in Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost prefecture.

I am not sure if we have pubished specs in this thing beyond the screen size and resolution (and 1Ghz Snapdragon, ofcourse).
But the movistar site says it has 512 MB ROM, 256 MB RAM, 5 hours talk time, and 11 days standby time. Sounds pretty comparable with most 3G/UMTS phones nowadays.
Still wish we know how long the video playback time was!
Oh yeah, dimensions are 5.08" x 2.76" x 0.39" ... pretty SAWEET!
(yes I posted this on another TG01 story, I figured it was useful information for ppl interested in this awesome phone!)

The TG01 is clearly a quality windows mobile device. We are starting to see a ton of really high end smartphones already this summer and they are going to keep coming. This is an exciting time for windows mobile and I am really anxious to see many of these higher end phones in person.

unfortunately i bought this phone and just found out its missing one of the basic Japanese phone needs!! it cannot receive mobile phones emails, like emails from docomo, softbank or au. they told me the only way is to check these emails is by using my PC!! and the next google phone will has the same problem!
i guess docomo really sucks on this issue!! unlike softbank as they included the phone email as an account to be read together with yahoo or hotmail emails in their iphone.
i wonder if they gonna fix this in the future...
