Amazon's Nokia N97 release date slides back to June 30
We'd hoped that June 25 date would stay put -- or even move up a bit in our overly optimistic, idealistic world -- but at this point, things aren't looking good. Amazon has now updated its N97 availability date from June 25 to June 30, possibly reflecting some insider information they've received from Nokia that the phone's running a little behind schedule. Of course, first-party preorders aren't expected to ship until July, so if the June 30 thing seriously pans out, this still puts you ahead of the game. At any rate, there's one silver lining to this cloud: you can drool over the hands-on our colleagues over at Engadget Spanish have put together while you wait.

OR you could spend your $600 dollars on something other than a barely-functional piece of plastic from Finland.
lunatichighh @ Jun 7th 2009 5:24PM
As opposed to? A $700 contract-free barely-functional slate of glued glass and plastic from China (oh wait, "designed" in Cupertino..)?

The N97 far exceeds the iPhone. Anything the iPhone can do, the N97 can do better... The only thing that Apple has is the touch screen patents.
Firewarrior @ Jun 7th 2009 7:33PM
And the er, App store. Nothing has reached it yet. To me that is the deal breaker. Youtube and bbc Iplayer is something that can be done other stuff, except for Apple Trailers.

i really hope Nokia put more in the N97 than just a 5800 with a physical keyboard, more memory, the good but 2 years old n95's camera and ...a new widgetfull homescreen. I wanted to replace my n95-8gb with it, and now i wonder what to do. A new winmo 6.5, a pre, or an n97 ? If the OVI Store looks finally good when the this nokia come out i may get it, but looking the beta looking it has right now it's frustrating.

I really, really want to cancel my n97 pre-order. So what If I'm getting the phone for $500 with a bluetooth headset... it's clear that by rushing out for this "deal", I can't purchase the pre or iPhone. Nokia does not let people cancel their pre-orders.
Stupid #$^#$ phone. I hope I can pawn it off on eBay the second the shipping notice comes in. I should have learned my lesson after the n85.

I'm looking forward to the N97 to beat the Pre, iPhone, and Blackberries - the whole bunch. It's got everything that the iPhone and many others are still catching up on, like 5mp camera, multitasking, Flash support, home screen widgets, video recording, FM transmitter and receiver, and 32gb + 16gb storage, etc. The only other phones I could consider instead are Samsung Omnia HD, and maybe, maybe the Touch Pro 2, but nah - I'm not going for WinMo.
Sorry this sounds like a Nokia ad now ;) - don't mean it to be that way, because Nokia have made their mistakes too, but the truth still is that Nokia (and Samsung and LG, too, to at least some degree) started doing things that North Americans are only now realizing a cell phone can do already 5-8 years ago. Stuff like no copy-paste until the most recent OS, no video recording, no multitasking, no Flash, only 2mp camera etc have made me laugh at the iPhone ever since it came out - even though the iPhone UI has, admittedly, been great for other reasons.
The Pre is a welcome addition to the market in the US, but the CDMA phone that Sprint offers doesn't work globally and doesn't get the same quality of connection as Nokia HSDPA 3G phones do.
The iPhone/Pre/BB craze in NA now is great, as it will eventually bring North American markets closer to where Europe and Asia have already been for years, but nothing's gonna make me buy an iPhone, a Pre or a WinMo device over the new Nokia N97.

@KO
It does sound like a Nokia ad. But what you fail to mention is they have been doing 'it' for years now, but they have been doing 'it' poorly for years now. Bottom line is N97 old symbian OS is NOT even in same ballpark as Iphone or Pre and there is no arguing that. It does not matter if you have 10MP camera, video, multitasking etc if the overall experience is crap. Don't even get started on the download app store etc. They have a resistive touch screen on 5800, why would they ever make that choice in todays market. Nokia only makes good cheap phones, they are way back in smartphones now. Its all about the OS these days...

There are a couple of billion reasons in China and India.

Hopefully the UK contract release date is underway, my contract runs out on the 22th. So hopefully I'll be getting it for free on a £30 pay monthly.

Palm Pre was just released, iPhone 3 will be announced tomorrow. What's the holdup on the N97? I am growing tired of waiting for my preorder to arrive, for a phone that was announced in December '08.
larry @ Jun 8th 2009 7:45AM
you guys are idiots the app store is a waste of time anyway anyway who has used nokia for years knows the websites to get thousands of free apps.. as for the type of touch screen try to play bridge , or any other game that you need the stylus for on the capac. touchscreen on the iphone.. just cant do it.. there are plusses and minuses to each kind of touch screen.

Blah, I gave up trying to wait for the N97 so I canceled my Amazon pre order and am now going to wait for the N900 with its already superior specs.
Pascal @ Jun 8th 2009 7:03PM
Got a call today from the Nokia store in NY city, they're having a pre-sale tomorrow morning for the people who signed up for the waiting list between 7:30 to 10am. They offered to buy it on the phone if I couldn't make it.
Andrew @ Jun 9th 2009 9:41PM
It still says June 25th on the web page.
