iTunes support confirmed for Palm Pre
We'd already heard through the gravevine that iTunes support would be baked into Palm's forthcoming Pre, but now it's official. During Palm's D7 keynote today in Carlsbad, Paul Cousino showed attendees that non-DRM music, photos and videos could be synced with the Pre via iTunes (on Mac and Windows, naturally). In his words: "It shows up in iTunes just like a regular device."
Update: So, Palm has issued an official press release detailing the new webOS features shown today at All Things Digital. The so-called media sync feature is straight up designed to "synchronize seamlessly with iTunes," giving users the ability to use Apple's media management software for transferring all non-DRM media. Furthermore, the Pre is engineered to act as a "mass storage drive," letting users side-load content on the fly. The full release also details the App Catalog and Twitter in Universal Search.

I wonder what Apple thinks. On one hand, boosting the hardware options could lead to more iTunes support and revenue. But on the other hand, this could cannibalize their iPhone/iPod hardware sales. tough one.

I dont think that Apple has anything to worry about. They know that the Palm is a really good phone and they also know that the phone was used using a lot of linux stuff that they perfected and they are gonna give credit where credit is due. I think its great for the palm and the iphone because now you have a choice between two phones that are just great. I have been waiting on a phone that will perform like my iphone that I have. Since I have sprint also I am getting 2 palm pre's on launch date. One for me and one for my wife

If only it could support the Zune software... I can't do itunes with all of these WMAs I've got.

i was thinking the same thing. not because of the WMA thing really but just because i use Zune software since i have a Zune. it would be nice to have a couple playlists that i could sync to my Pre from there as well since iTunes doesn't do all the automatic stuff (or at least it didn't the last time i used it, which has been a while ago).

This phone is going to be good. Only thing that sucks is it will be a CDMA device at first. itunes integration will be good. I wonder how they got that to happen.

This is almost comical. Blackberry's software for syncing with iTunes (launched last October?) is called MediaSync: www.blackberry.com/mediasync. Now Palm has applied the same name (MediaSync) to its method of copying what the Blackberry has already been able to do for the last 8 or so months. Niiiice...

iTunes support is great and all for the Pre, but it is really the 35,000 apps that make the iPhone cool, not iTunes itself.
What will the Pre app store look like?
