Nokia N97 pre-order falls to $524.25 in the US
Yes, technology tends to fall in price as it ages, but is the still-unreleased N97 prematurely getting on in the years or something? Did we miss that memo? Nokia USA is already blowing out N97 pre-orders for $174.75 off the $699 retail price after having originally gone up for sale just earlier this week -- and you still get a free BH-703 headset thrown in for good measure. Considering that this means you're getting the most full-featured device Nokia has ever made for the same price as a NAM E75, it seems like a no-brainer; hurry up, though, because we suspect this discount is a limited-time sort of deal.
[Thanks, Trudy]
Update: With code CARTP409N, the price falls to a ridiculously low $454. Seriously, what's up with the fire sale? Thanks, Lee!
Update 2: Sadly, the code's no longer working, but it seems like Nokia may honor pricing for those that ordered -- here's hoping. Thanks, everyone!

Just placed my order.
Cicero @ May 8th 2009 3:55AM
Just ordered also! I hope this goes through. Last time I saw a good deal on a phone ($200 for 5800 XPressMusic from Dell) I ordered then 2 weeks later they said they were out and canceled my order. This one better go through!
geseki @ May 8th 2009 5:28AM
Hopefully this goes through....E71 and 5800 have good prices if you would rather get one of those as well.
There is a 10% off on the whole site, and the coupon takes a big chunk off most of the phones.
Fingers crossed....

m3tric @ May 8th 2009 7:02PM
I'm curious, what does AT&T or T-Mobile charge to activate an unlocked smartphone like an N97?
Ahmad @ May 8th 2009 9:37PM
Nah they don't care.
Aaron @ May 8th 2009 7:05AM
Surely this should be on the main Engadget page. That's an amazing price!
Joel @ May 8th 2009 8:57AM
I wonder if this is the North American version (NAM) with 3g operating frequencies for AT&T or is that assumed given that the order is processed through Nokia USA?
dave @ May 8th 2009 9:20AM
The website NO LONGER has the discount
Fishkill @ May 8th 2009 10:04AM
They cancelled my order and told me it was a glitch. The more Nokia makes you think they care about you .... the more they tell you to suq it.
Casper @ May 8th 2009 10:19AM
I tried placing the order earlier when the deal was still available, but they declined 3 of my credit cards. When I called Nokia later they refused to acknowledge any promotions ever applied. Bastards!
Omagus @ May 8th 2009 11:00AM
My receipt was emailed to me with the discounted price. I double checked online and the order is still intact with the discounted price. Wonder if they'll cancel mine...
Jota @ May 8th 2009 11:17AM
I'm so hoping this was a way for them to test out demand at a different price point... Hopefully that short experiment will have told them they need to drop the price by $250 (2 weeks after launch, natch, they still need to skim the early adopter/ fanboy market)
Eric @ May 8th 2009 11:54AM
Just got off the phone with a Nokia Care rep and he indicated that it was indeed a glitch in the system (which is what I figured), but that Nokia would honor the order at the price indicated (N97 - $487 incl. tax & shipping).
cmcken1 @ May 22nd 2009 2:53PM
Looks like it's the old "bait and switch" routine to entice the consumer into a sale.
Shahin @ May 8th 2009 1:08PM
How about the other promo code that knocks off 70 bucks? Is that one ok, cause it still works.
minesasecret @ May 8th 2009 1:30PM
Nooo should've pre ordered when I had the chance.. ohh well.. I guess Engadget's hands on kinda scared me away anyway..
JL @ May 8th 2009 2:37PM
My order placed this morning was cancelled by Brightpoint (who is like a middle man for Nokia).
backbeat @ May 8th 2009 3:50PM
Brightpoint should die a slow, agonizing death by fire -after- being tarred and feathered.
Douglas @ May 8th 2009 4:41PM
Well here's the question now. The coupon code to remove the bluetooth still works as of now, so is now the time to get in at $629 or do we wait until Nokia does their early adopter pricing and hope that they bring it down, even though the N96 is still over $600 still as well (on Nokia's site)?
Eric @ May 8th 2009 5:32PM
If you don't mind waiting - I'd hold off. The price will likely drop @ other online retailers (ie. Dell, Amazon) weeks after the initial release.
Ray @ May 9th 2009 1:59PM
Resistive=FAIL Sorry guys, I'm a big Nokia fan and all (I personally have an N95 8GB), But a major player like Nokia needs to have capacitative screens in their flagship, and not yesterday's resistive technology. If you've ever had a chance to play with a resistive screen, you know that there needs to be undue pressure to get the touchscreen features to work, so lightly swiping it would'nt activate it (It feels like there's a learning curve to get the pressure just right). It just feels shoddy... this is a huge deal-breaker for me.
cmcken1 @ May 22nd 2009 3:03PM
I just spoke to Nokia about that and they still claim it was a glitch and only was available for a 5 hour window. They had it fixed within hours that morning the said.
gautam @ May 25th 2009 4:38PM
im surprised how much human being can be fooled around ... im sure we all love phones and gadgets but these people play these games and den simply say it was a glitch that really hurts.... neways best of luck im gonna wait until they are out on streets and nobdy will busy because of apple 3g newer ver
