BlackBerry BIS drama today?
We've been getting tipped left and right that BIS outages are affecting BlackBerry customers on many carriers today, meaning your hands have probably become progressively twitchier over the last couple hours as they've become further and further removed from up-to-date email access. Horrifying, isn't it? Our own Jacob tells us service has already been restored for him, so hopefully everyone out there in RIM land is in good shape; of course, if you're still having issues, drop a line in comments.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Good God. I just activated a Pearl today. No wonder its acting funky. Good thing I have my iPod Touch to save the day :)

I am thinking the same thing, went from a touch pro to the Bold. I was wondering why I couldn't get my e-mail set up, still not receiving text messages though :(
WhatADouche @ Apr 13th 2009 6:09PM
Sucks for those BB users out there.
Roger Alford @ Apr 13th 2009 6:19PM
Getting tipped from users or just reading Boy Genius who reported this more then a few hours ago?
Point is. BIS totally works in SF for Sprint, so its not all carriers like people are claiming

Getting tipped. Cheers.

And by "more then a few hours ago" I'm assuming you mean one hour and forty minutes?
Bryce @ Apr 13th 2009 6:44PM
My BIS on AT&T has been in and out all day long emails are coming in sometimes with no delay and others several hours of delay. Plus FaceBook notifications are completely gone and not even notifying.

I thought RIM learned from last year with all their downtime, do they not know or understand how to setup redundant servers.. and other hardware...
I guess not, if this keeps happening I will have to go back to WinMo, this is unacceptable RIM, and why did they blame my carrier, hmmmm liars...
Carlos @ Apr 13th 2009 6:53PM
It's under scheduled Maintenance. it should be finished within the hour

follow up:
Event Synopsis: As of 1205 CT / 1305 ET BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 2.X ubscribers may be unable to send or receive messages, use the BlackBerry Internet Service web site, or perform activities such as creating new accounts, integrating third-party email accounts, or viewing email attachments. This affects BIS 2.X subscribers nationwide. Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) customers are not affected. The TRS trouble ticket is 3921158.
Current status: [Update: RIM continues to troubleshoot and expects service restoration to take place shortly.]

Availability is a cornerstone security concept and this is why RIM's Blackoutberry should not be considered for enterprise use. Integrity would be another topic...
Start looking at Windows Mobile or Symbian guys.
The D Train @ Apr 13th 2009 7:40PM
This statement holds no water, as this is a BIS issue not a BES issue. kthx.
Carlos @ Apr 13th 2009 8:12PM
BIS = POP3 e-mail. (generally speaking) BIS = corporate work e-mail with wireless sync of contacts, calendar, tasks, to-do's and e-mail. including old messages.
acme @ Apr 13th 2009 9:10PM
think about how you functioned before your blackberry, and go back to doing that.

Hey engadget why dont you make a post about how the BIS and BES server works so that morons like jonas dont sound like dumb asses. Oh wait i forgot you guys are owned by steve jobs !!! my bad
Chris Ziegler @ Apr 13th 2009 10:58PM
LAWL
klmsu19 @ Apr 14th 2009 12:03AM
hey the guy was wrong, but that doesnt negate the fact that people STILL use BIS for work email. Not everyone who owns or does business has access to a BES server but still needs decent email uptime. It doesnt lessen the impact that this is the SECOND major RIM outage in 2 months, with sporadic carrier BB outages in between. BB is touted as the "king of the hill" email solution, but is looking far from that right now. There are 3rd party push providers like mail2web which have and guarantee 99.9% uptime which is more than BB has had in 2009 so far. That's disappointing for a premium service were paying for at $30/month.

Sprint BIS is working fine in Charlotte, NC.
Dead_Rebel @ Apr 14th 2009 10:26AM
My Sprint BIS was down yesterday for about 8 hours. No email or Facebook notifications. Internet still worked fine though.
Derek @ Apr 14th 2009 10:34AM
There was an outage on T-Mobile yesterday and it was on RIMs side. Working fine for me today.
