Rumors have been flying the past couple days that the
OmniaHD is no more -- at least, not in name -- and it turns out that's partially true. We've received official word from Samsung that the S60-based superphone will be "selectively" renamed to "i8910 HD" in some countries "due to business issues." The spokesperson didn't expand on what those business issues were or what countries would get the name change, exactly, but let's be perfectly honest: this is one of those phones that could be called "Rotten Eggs in a Box" for all we care and we'd still line up to buy it at any price. Anyhow, Sammy says it'll still be using the Omnia name going forward for other products -- just not this one.

I'll keep my eye out for a i8917HD in the FCC filings

Hopefully they are keeping the name for future Windows Mobile phones.
And speaking of Omnia, I found a great themes collection for SPB Mobile Shell and one of them is a great looking Omnia theme (check it out: http://mobilespoon.blogspot.com/2009/04/change-your-spb-mobile-shell-skins-on.html)

that's what i was thinking! slap 6.5 on here and it's REALLY going to compete with the tp2 diamond 2 and tg01. ahhhhhh! decisions!

Have you read the specs for this phone? It offers everything you could ever want without overdoing the camera like SE Idou, though Idou is still just as sexy it doesnt offer HD capabilities. I like what HTC has done and is doing but this phone is just in a completely different league. It doesn't compete with tp2, diamond2 or tg01, it simply blows everything straight out of the water, straps C4 on 'em, detonates it just above ground, records it all in 720p HD video and smiles.

I think what's great about it is s60 is an open platform
None of that freezing and and tiny tiny "X button" crap with windows mobile
You'll be glad its on s60
It still has all of the office stuff you'd want from a normal 6.1 phone
But you're right 6.5 looks cool. I just don't know if its actually gonna be good in hand or if it only looks good on paper
slamEVIL @ Apr 10th 2009 1:15AM
@koray: i follow you. all four of them have their strong points though. right now, i think the omniahd's weakest link is no winmo; which might change, who knows.
@ale: i think we have nothing to worry about 6.5's performance. have you seen the video of it on the tg01?

anyone know exactly when this phone is coming out? I know sometime summer. Anything more specific? My verizon contract is ending in the summer and I was thinking of switching to t-mobile to buy this bad boy. I'm pretty set on it
KilgoreTrout @ Apr 9th 2009 6:41PM
I don't give a poop about what they are gonna call it, but if I can't get it soon to replace my Omnia(i910) Im gonna buy a Nokia N97 (which hopefully should hit the stores next months)
jouten @ Apr 9th 2009 7:40PM
Nokia 5800 XM FTW!! =P
htowngator @ Apr 9th 2009 9:53PM
Does anyone know what carrier should have this? It's GSM so I wonder if the naming convention is not to conflict with devices on T-Mo or AT&T.
JonnyBruha @ Apr 9th 2009 10:26PM
i8910 should be in stores as early as later this month, but more likely sometime later. A US version to support both AT&T 3G frequencies is not planned, much less a T-Mobile 1700 UMTS version. It will most likely never be available on any North American GSM carrier.
N97 is set to launch in Europe in late June and the US version will come out in early July.
m3tric @ Apr 9th 2009 11:30PM
I was REALLY looking forward to this sexy phone, but as usual, the U.S. gets the shaft when it comes to cutting edge phone technology.
JonnyBruha @ Apr 9th 2009 11:57PM
Also keep in mind that the OmniaHD/i8910 will work on both T-Mobile and AT&T for voice and EDGE data and will work on AT&T's 3G in most areas since AT&T uses the UMTS 1900 frequency for a larger part of their 3G coverage. YMMV of course, depending on where you live.
ale @ Apr 10th 2009 1:05AM
Yeah I know the 3G aspects are shifty but from what I saw in the specs (I think from mobilecityonline) it looked like T-mobile was supported over AT&T. Maybe I'm getting the frequencies wrong. Are you sure that it works on AT&T 3G? I know the voice is fine on both because its a world GSM chip
Either way I have Wifi on my college campus so I would probably just pay for voice and have the internet right there/
ale @ Apr 10th 2009 1:08AM
And yeah I'm looking at the n97 and Idou as my first smartphones as well
I know I could go with RIM or something but their plans are wayyyy expensive like the iphone
I really want a high end phone that has wifi so I don't HAVE to pay for internet but CAN if I really want to later in life
I guess maybe I'm stuck with the n97 (not like it isn't still awesome) or the Idou
But I really want the HD, capacitive, and AMOLED
Any suggestions? There's nothing else other than the G1 which I'm not that into

I can't wait to see this phone! It's the best I've ever seen!
Just to compare it with some other phones:
- Omnia HD vs. Nokia N97 > N97 has a bad battery against Omnia HD's 1500 mAh; smaller, LCD-resistive screen than Omnia HD's 3.7" AMOLED-capacitive screen; 5 MP camera with 720x480p video recording against Omnia HD's 8 MP with HD 1280x720p video recording; the N97 has 32GB internal memory + microSD card up to 16GB against the Omnia HD's 8/16GB internal memory + microSD up to 32GB memory (they're the same, 48GB, one way ore another); and they have the same S60 5th edition OS
- Omnia HD vs. iPhone 3G (non-jailbroken) > iPhone 3G has a 3.5" LCD-capacitive screen against Omnia HD's 3.7" AMOLED-capacitive screen; 2MP without video recording against Omnia HD's 8 MP with HD 1280x720p video recording; iPhone 3G has 8/16GB internal memory without microSD slot against the Omnia HD's 8/16GB internal memory + microSD up to 32GB memory (max. 48GB); iPhone 3G has iPhone OS against Omnia HD's S60 5th edition (they're both very good OS's)
- Omnia HD vs. Palm Pre > Palm Pre has a 3.1" LCD screen against Omnia HD's 3.7" AMOLED-capacitive screen; 3MP without video recording against Omnia HD's 8 MP with HD 1280x720p video recording; Palm Pre has 8GB integrated memory without an microSD slot against the Omnia HD's 8/16GB internal memory + microSD up to 32GB memory (max. 48GB); Palm Pre has the webOS vs. the Omnia HD's S60 5th edition (they're both very good OS's)
- Omnia HD vs. SE Idou > SE Idou has a 3.5" LCD-resistive screen against Omnia HD's 3.7" AMOLED-capacitive screen; 12.1MP with 720x480p video recording vs. Omnia HD's 8 MP with HD 1280x720p video recording; SE Idou has unknown internal memory + microSD slot vs. the Omnia HD's 8/16GB internal memory + microSD up to 32GB memory (max. 48GB); and they have the same S60 5th edition OS (SE Idou has a skin integrated into S60 5th edition)
The Omnia HD beats every single phone out there with those amazing specs. I love it!
I hope it's coming to T-Mobile Croatia :)
