Oh Apple, what are you up to? Just like we saw right around this time last year in preparation for Apple's new iPhone 3G and updated iPod touch, Apple is placing huge orders of NAND chips thereby threatening the supply in demand by other tier-one vendors. This time we've got
DigiTimes confirming earlier reports that Apple is cornering the market on flash memory -- specifically, the Taiwanese rumor rag is reporting orders of "100 million 8Gb (8 gigabit, not gigabyte) NAND flash chips mostly with Samsung Electronics." That's
twice the size of the order reported last year. The tiny memory chips are then recombined during manufacturing into the larger 16GB, 32GB, and so on capacities we expect to find in our handheld consumer electronics. Anyone still doubting
new Apple handhelds in June?

I'm glad this information is out there. I can start saving now, and by June I should be able to afford it! ;-/

how much do you make a month? Does $200 needs saving for 3 months? LOL I am just joking
ScooperJay @ Apr 9th 2009 11:45AM
I was being sarcastic.
I also make it a habit of purchasing off-contract, even if it is gray market, so $200 is not realistic.

Still a decent phone on one of the worst carriers in the nation....
dtzitz @ Apr 9th 2009 10:05AM
not to disagree with you but why do you say that?
Sam @ Apr 9th 2009 10:25AM
I agree with you, I wish T-Mobile was the carrier for that phone, then I wouldn't have to switch. I heard really bad experiences with AT&T
evangi23 @ Apr 9th 2009 3:49PM
@dtzitz: I heard that AT&T drops calls like you wouldn't believe.
bernardino @ Apr 9th 2009 11:26PM
I'm with AT&T and I had more dropped calls with Verizon than I do with AT&T. I only had like 2 bars at home with Verizon but I have 5 bars with AT&T. That's just my experience.
divertito @ Apr 11th 2009 10:51AM
Since these are Gb rather than GB, does that mean they would have to be putting 8 of these in to get to 8GB?

I had ATT last year for almost a month had to cancel it. I started out with one of their free phones to try out their service and everywhere I went EVERY call was dropped at least once and data speeds were so slow I just gave up on using it. when I called their tech dept to see if there was anything they could do they told me to take the phone back and try another carrier....so I did and went back to verizon. I have a personal use phone and a work phone. My phone is with verizon and my work phone is through sprint. I've never had a call drop out on me and I get great data speeds everywhere I go.
I would try T-Mobile but at least they had the decency to tell me up front that the service wouldn't work where I lived.
Just for reference I work in washington DC...Supposedly one of ATT's best service area's...
bldgengineer @ Apr 9th 2009 11:28AM
don't get me wrong...if the iphone was one another service AND had some kind of expandable memory then I would buy it without hesitation. I'm not even waiting for a Pre...I have a smartphone for work, why would I want one for myself? I'm waiting on a media phone to come out for verizon or sprint that is going to MAKE me pay 200-300 for it.

Um, I don't know which part of DC you work in but I commute daily from south of Baltimore down to DC and I am yet to have a dropped call. In fact, since the new firmware the quality and coverage have improved - not sure if its the software or AT&T is adding coverage. By the way, AT&T is pretty bad in Virginia from my experience, don't know what its like for everyone else. I am sad to admit but the radio on the iPhone now rivals my E71 in performance :(
I think this is and endless war between Verizon and ATT in the DC/Baltimore area. Several of my friends have switched to AT&T and have had no problems, so perhaps some of these issues are device related.
P.S. Saving $ for July.
