With the
9630 hopefully right around the corner, the
BlackBerry 8830 should be gearing up to take its final curtain call -- but Verizon's not done supporting it just yet. Thankfully, we've been assured the device will be graced with an official upgrade to 4.5, up from the build of 4.2 that it's rocking right now. For what it's worth, Sprint has already released a 4.5 upgrade for
its version of the 8830, so this should come as no big surprise -- they're just keeping up with the Joneses, as it were. Too bad they couldn't do it a little faster, though, eh?

Not sure why the Sprint link sends you to a story about the 8330 Curve. Might want to fix that.

About time, although I don't really care since I've been rocking Sprint's 4.5 on my Verizon 8830 for a while now...

Why? I just upgraded to 4.5 this weekend on my 8830. GPS on BBMaps is enabled...woooopdeee. I'm jumping over to the Niagara ASAP.

@ NiagaraUniv -- "Why?" How about because it includes Documents To Go? This is a great feature for those in a corporate environment. But, I also agree with you -- I'm going over to the Niagara when it (finally) comes out.

Finally! Although releasing it now, MONTHS after it was released for other carriers, doesn't really make up for it.

Finally. Though hopefully work will get me a 9630 after they come out, it'd be nice to have a (somewhat) modern BBOS on my phone, which has been languishing in obscurity. Course, I'm sure the OS situation with the 9630 won't be much better, since I am still dealing with Verizon. :|

Can't operate the pandora internet radio w/o the new OS, either. As someone who will keep the 8830 for the foreseeable future (sorry Niagara geeks), I hope this upgrade comes sooner than later.

Please tell me this means that there will be full GPS on Verizon and not the $10 a month VZNav bs.

The 8830 has open GPS. I use Google Maps both here in the states and it worked overseas.

Seriously. When?
And will it fix the fact that I can’t use the GPS I paid for with third party apps such as Google Maps?

It's finally here! http://www.vzam.net/blackberry/ Loading it now.
