AT&T pulls trigger on Nokia E71x and Samsung Propel Pro
Kicking off what's sure to be a fun-filled week of announcements surrounding CTIA out in Vegas, AT&T's smartphone lineup just got a little beefier thanks to the official introduction of a couple devices we've been expecting for a hot minute now. First up, the Nokia E71x is just about ready for shelves, bringing WiFi, AT&T Navigator (which hopefully won't preclude the use of Nokia Maps and other GPS-enabled apps), and all of the lauded physical design characteristics you're used to from the original, unbranded E71. The best thing here might be the price -- just $99.99 on contract after rebate, thankfully beating rumors of $200 and $150 by a country mile; it'll hit shelves "in the coming weeks." Next up is the Samsung Propel Pro, a device that shares very little in common with its Propel namesake other than a form factor, mainly because this sucker's a full-out smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.1. It's got WiFi, a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard (naturally) and will be available on April 14 for $149.99 after all your discounts have been applied and your two-year agreement is filed away.

hi-five.

Too bad the $99 E71x will require a $30 data plan.

"require" is a strong word to use. I talked to a guy at AT&T, and they said that you have to start out with one, but the iPhone is the only device where it is actually (enforced) required. So I'll pay $30 for the first month of data and then cancel it!

what the heck happened to the home screen?? The clock isn't supposed to be down at the bottom and why are there no words next to the calendar and WLAN icons, and where's the setup email icons? I hope you didn't take all the Nokia out of the E71.

Yea, so the nice white or silver E71 isn't going to happen is it. Leave it to ATnT to take a distinct looking device and make it look like every other blaqkick on the US market.
And isn't the E71 supposed to be able to tether in 3g? Naw, they wouldn't leave that on there.
Looks like I'll be keeping my vintage 8300 Curve for another few months.
But wait, what's this? Nokia.com thinks my Curve in "Good" condition is worth $50 on trade in for an unlocked E71x... with my choice of colors... and another $1 for a working USB cord...

Look at the fine lines in the ATT ads
http://www.wireless.att.com/businesscenter/NokiaE71x/index.jsp ....
"Wi-Fi not available in all areas. Use of AT&T’s Wi-Fi service requires a subscription to an AT&T PDA Data, or PDA Unlimited Data Plan."
USE OF WIFI SERVICE REQUIRES A SUBSCRIPTION TO AN AT&T PDA DATA??????
This phone has NO WIFI, take a look at www.nokiausa.com. This is the "CASTRATED" version of E71. ATT is trying to smoke us into believing at that E71X internet connectivity through their data service rather that true WIFI!!!!!!!
Stupid ATT

Can anyone else confirm or deny this?
the360king @ Mar 30th 2009 9:06PM
Must be a misprint. It you look at the specs under connectivity, it states it has "Wi-Fi®: IEEE 802.11 b/g". Either they need to reword the fine print at the end or they are lying about 802.11 b/g.
Kasona @ Mar 30th 2009 11:30PM
They are probably referring to ATT Wifi hotspots (aka, Starbucks)
I don't know that they could actually limit the wifi radio in the phone itself

I was waiting to see if AT&T was going to offer this phone, but after reading the press release yesterday, I bought the unlocked phone at newegg for $320 (free shipping). I can use the $15 data plan and tether for free. I've never gone the unlocked route before, but I'm tired of these stripped down phones after the carrier gets their hands on them.

Err....meant to say E71 somewhere in that post...
