HTC Magic (Sapphire) with T-Mobile USA logo hits the FCC
It's been just over a month since HTC's Magic / Sapphire first made its way through the FCC, although without any indication its destiny lied with T-Mobile. Well, it's back for Round Two, and this time the images clearly have the company's logo emblazoned at the top, just as it was at MWC when Google was showcasing its offline Gmail, and 7.2Mbps HSDPA. Yep, it's clearly heading to you-know-who's 3G network. No "G2" in sight, so for now we'll have to wait to see which of the three likely names -- or something else entirely -- T-Mo decides to run with.

I am assumming T-Mobile USA will launch this about the same time they launch the new HTC Touch Pro 2/Rhodium/Tungsten/Wing 2, whatever they want to call it. I regret leaving Windows Mobile for Android. I miss Windows Mobile and I cannot wait to go back to it... albeit, this is not a Windows Mobile thread so I will stay on topic. There is NO difference between this and the G1 besides the lack of a full QWERTY keypad (that sucks!). I will stick with my G1 and patiently wait for the OTA "Cupcake" update from T-Mobile.
alyaba @ Mar 27th 2009 5:40AM
what do you miss from your windows phone my last phone was a windows phone that i used and loved for 2 years but i cant think of anything that i dont have on my g1, well other than the on screen keyboard which you can get threw an app now or wait for the update next month
Nathan @ Mar 27th 2009 6:11AM
I miss the ability to find almost anything for windows mobile. It has all already been made I don't have to wait for an app to be written. I want skype for my G1 that would be fun.
KilgoreTrout @ Mar 27th 2009 7:35AM
I refuse to belive that you can be right.
What would be the point of releasing a G1 without K-board and just a bit uglier?
This thing must include some improvement over the G1, maybe the processor, maybe RAM, maybe memory , anything , but it can't be just a dumbed down G1 or Android would be shooting itself on both feet.
Nathan @ Mar 27th 2009 9:38AM
It is capable of 7.2mbps but we can't really get any use out of that in North America. As far as I know, this is just a QWERTY-less G1. A US version of the Magic. It is standard with "cupcake" other than that I don't know I would love for more info though!
Galen20K @ Mar 27th 2009 5:28AM
There's one major difference between this and the G1, it supposedly supports UMA which my G1 does not.
hfm @ Mar 27th 2009 12:16PM
Is that Unified Memory Architecture or similar?
That's the one big beef I have with the G1 is that the amount of memory to store and run apps is paltry. I'd love to be able to utilize the memory card for that (my symbian phone had that ability). I'd like the G1 much more if I didn't have to be so conscious of the app memory. Another thing I'd love them to fix in an update is the fact that the phone locks up in sleep mode once in a great while, which since it happens to me mostly getting on/off subway or when I'm in a weak coverage area that it's got something to do with connecting to the network while sleeping.
The battery life I am actually not that bummed about since I downloaded an app to more efficiently toggle various battery sucking features. I've gotten a big boost from just switching on 3G and GPS for when I really need them. Edge seems to be good enough for general use.
Derek @ Mar 27th 2009 1:36PM
@hfm - UMA stands for Unlicensed Mobile Access. That is how the HotSpot@Home feature works on T-Mobile phones. It allows the phone to make calls through the internet via a wireless router.
mdmadph @ Mar 30th 2009 12:42PM
I'd be real surprised if this was actually true. There's no 3G phones that support UMA, and I've heard there's something keeping that from happening.
Signed, a pissed-off G1 owner.
htowngator @ Mar 27th 2009 10:32AM
Too bad T-mobile still has craptastic data coverage else the 3G speed would be a good thing. I'm glad that my Sprint contract expires in October so I can have all of these phones available to search through at the time (Pre, iPhone, G2, Omnia HD, etc etc.).
Galen20K @ Mar 27th 2009 3:14PM
Yeah too bad T-Mobile's 3G service is Way Faster than any other Carrier's 3G AND its the Fastest Growing. It took years for ATT and Verizon to get their 3G out to the same amount of Customers as T-Mobile did in mere Months.
yeah, sorry Hater
; D
OReally @ Mar 27th 2009 5:10PM
I would expect to see 4G coverage rolled out en masse by VZW and Sprint before you see a nationally competitive T-Mobile 3G network. T-Mobile is like the K-Mart of wireless carriers. You save your bucks and get what you pay for. It is a solid model and nothing wrong for those who don't mind waiting for the other carriers hand-me-downs. It is hard to be cutting edge and cheap at the same time, ask Sprint how they are doing financially and where they are on that WiMax network. The $50 unlimited plans are pretty cool, but, ATT/Verizon aren't in danger until T-Mobile puts together a quality network though.
Galen20K @ Mar 27th 2009 9:14PM
OReally you are Really ReTarded Obviously ATT is more like Kmart if you ask me with their Crapulistic SUB par Service, Dropped Calls, and Horrible 3G speeds.

I like the extra pics I saw over at the link above to CellPhoneSignal.com. They have a nice youtube video with multiple pics of this sweet phone. Woohoo, can't wait.
PEZ @ Mar 27th 2009 1:09PM
I think th eG series will always be with a hardware KB.. this saphire will prob be the sofrtware one.
Scuzzy @ Mar 27th 2009 5:41PM
Crap and I just got the 8900 curve if only this had a solid release date then I could return my curve and wait for this. who know when its supposed to launch though :(
tmojoe @ Mar 29th 2009 4:29PM
The G2 should be released as early as mid April, and no later than the 2nd week of may.
