Rogers begins selling white Nokia E71, Americans consider relocating
You Yanks may bang on the Canucks for having to deal with those ridiculous three-year contracts, but every so often, something goes down in the Canadian mobile space that flat-out silences everyone beneath the border. Take this, for instance -- Nokia's white E71, which can only be scored over in Europe and now in Canada with support for native 3G bands, is finally on sale at Rogers Wireless. Oh sure, the only difference between this E71 and the black E71 is the colors involved, but we all know just how important that becomes when exclusivity is mixed in. The pain? $99.99 on a lifetime, er, three-year contract. Sorry, we had too.

The white E71 has been available to US customers at dell.com for quite some time.
WhatADouche @ Mar 18th 2009 12:37PM
That's the unlocked version which cost-conscious US consumers aren't flocking to buy. $99.99 is a good price for the E71.

You are 100% right, I worked for a company here in NYC and we sold both colors in the NAM version since it came out last year.

3 years contract?????
Jeez, that's bleeding slavery.
I would feel like I had just sold my soul in signing such a contract.
Here in Scandinavia contracts for subsidized phones and netbooks are MAXIMUM 6 months.
I bought my Samsung Omnia for 200 euros in October and it's already unlocked.
and an HTC touch HD, from another carrier in November for the same price and it will be unlocked next month, during these 6 months I had to pay about 50 euros per month (per phone) for unlimited data (HSDPA/3G)and MMS/SMS and practically unlimited voice (200minutes a month), the second contract was similarly priced but offered some more free voice minutes and some less MMS/SMS.
That Nokia (or any Nseries model) can be had for under 200 euros with 6 month contract, or even for free with 6 month contract if you pay for your browsing, downloading calls, etc.
It seems that for once someone gets screwed more than scandinavians.
Hard to belive.

I don't think I'll ever understand the unending waves of love that some people have for Nokia sets. I understand they're a big deal across most of the world, but -- correct me if I'm wrong -- with the exception of the N95, I can't remember the last time their high-end stuff was "must-have" gear in the U.S.
Not dogging them at all; just saying. And congrats to Canada for snapping this one up.

Pretty sure I saw this the other day at Best Buy in Seattle in their "unlocked phones" section. ymmv.

If you're looking for a phone that does email... stick with a blackberry, even though nokia does have the direct push email service, it's still in beta and it's hit and miss. The build quality on this is great, nice and solid, no squeaks and has a nice weight to it. Symbian is workable, however, the os needs an overhaul. FYI folks are also reporting receptions issues with the unit (when holding the phone, hand covers antenna area).
Douglas @ Mar 18th 2009 5:58PM
FYI Steve, the OS does not need an overhaul. It's missing a few key features, but on the whole, this is my favorite OS out there. I don't see what the problem is, and why everybody beats up on it. Ok, its aged a little. Big deal. Its steal easy as all hell to use, and you can do almost anything you want with it. What would be nice is if all of us who have FP1 could get an update to FP2 with all the prior Eseries functionality and more. And since I just bought an unlocked E71, I can finally comment on the reception issue. It's not an issue unless you're in an area where coverage is a problem. When I'm getting pounded with 3G coverage, I can cover the antenna all I want and I will not drop any bars, but unlike my N95, it struggles when there isn't a great signal in the area (minimal 3G and bad GSM coverage), and covering the antenna can kick you down 2-3 bars some times. Great phone though. I'm extremely happy with it. Buy it unlocked.

I have own this phone for over 6 months now and I got to say it is the best phone I have own to date. I have had BB, Palm, HTC, and by far my E-71 has surpassed my expectation. Yes it has it's quirks however for all it will do I'm happy.

I have been loving my unlocked E71 on AT&T for 3 weeks now - a little graduation present to myself. It really is a great compromise b/w business and pleasure.
However, I wonder about some of the fawning over the white version I see online, and I can only imagine it's coming from people who have only seen Nokia's publicity photos of the white model -- which doesn't seem likely on some of the tech blogs that are white E71 crazy. I came pretty close to buying the white version myself, having only seen deliciously photoshopped images such as the one on this post. Hell, I'd almost call it an "artist's rendering" rather than a picture. I noticed a few people on Amazon comment that the phone they got did not look like the picture, so I checked Flickr for some unboxing action.
Seriously, the "white" model ain't that pretty. It might look as good as it does here if you never leave your brightly-lit all-white spaceship so that all of the metal surfaces are shining similar whiteness to the keyboard. Otherwise, in normal on-earth settings, the metal casing is a lot darker than you think, and the keyboard just sticks out like buck teeth. The contrast is really weird. Maybe some people still love that, but do yourself a favor and check out Flickr for white E71s before you buy, thinking you'll get some all-white angelic glowing thing.
