Could Apple possibly be working on another iPhone? Well, yes, of course -- but
Mac Rumors may have stumbled upon the first solid evidence that there's a major hardware revision in the works (and no, we're not necessarily talking about the
nano). Seems that the latest firmware revisions have some juicy metadata buried deep within that refers to a product code of "iPhone2,1" -- a decidedly higher number than the "iPhone1,2" representing the current iPhone 3G. What's more, an ad network is reporting web hits from an iPhone2,1, so it looks like this is very much the real deal; only question is, just what the heck is it?

CDMA iPhone? yes please.
Chris B. @ Jan 28th 2009 11:23PM
I absofrickinlutely hope so. I'm so tired of ATT's network sometimes I could just scream - can you hear me now?
I know, I could hardly resist...
Squid7085 @ Jan 29th 2009 12:16AM
An LTE/CDMA phone is more likely. I don't see Apple throwing in for a CDMA phone ever. Its on its way out.
qous @ Jan 28th 2009 11:42PM
This just in: Apple working on updates to its product line!
Esquire0399 @ Jan 29th 2009 12:36AM
This is exactly what I thought when I read this. I'm not sure I understand why this is such a big deal. It's the same routine every year and I doubt it will change any time soon.
ceric20 @ Jan 29th 2009 2:00AM
I dont understand where people are having issues with ATT I see alot of people complaning about there service. Where do you live? in the sticks? I live in Buffalo NY travel all across NYS and i have no problems at all with coverage here. When i had Verizon i had more dead spots.
AndyDrum @ Mar 19th 2009 4:34PM
Same for me! Except in Minneapolis.
Karthi @ Jan 29th 2009 7:51AM
OMG, as a apple fan, i cant wait to see what it is..

probably have wigi spec N and call is AIRport for iphone, dual core CPU with a dedicated graphics subsystem (LIKE THE G1) asharper screen (the DENSIST WE'VE EVER RELEASED UNTIL THE NEXT IPOD) and maybe a flash.
Like, wow.
Jamar @ Jan 30th 2009 10:11AM
LOL on the screen. Apple's been left in the dust on this one- the Sharp 931SH has a 1024x600 3.8" screen. Yes- a resolution you'd normally find in a netbook, on a phone screen slightly bigger than the iPhone's. Take that, Apple.
Nathan @ Mar 20th 2009 2:26AM
this comment is actually a reply to Jamar...
Really, the Sharp 931sh is a Japanese phone and not a smartphone. This hardly competes with Apple. At all.
Sorry, I had to say it.
Humptydumpty @ Jan 29th 2009 10:48AM
i would give anything for a iPhone on Verizon............................................................................................................................................................................anything.
IfYouLikeVerizonUraMoron @ Jan 29th 2009 11:12AM
iPhone on Verizon? LMAO. Ur complete and utter morons if you ever think Apple will be on Verizon.
Also ur a complete and utter moron if you think Verizon has a better network and/or coverage than AT&T.
Steve.G @ Jan 29th 2009 12:00PM
Now there's some good logic.... [/sarcasm]
Zach @ Mar 19th 2009 6:27PM
Well, considering to Consumer Reports, Verizon has the best coverage in 19 of 20 major cities tested. AT&T was third out of four in 16 of 20, last in 2 of 20, and second in 2 of 20.
corey @ Mar 19th 2009 10:07PM
...good thing it was originally supposed to be on verizon buddy.
Nathan @ Mar 20th 2009 2:27AM
@corey I am glad you knew that.
Razor1973 @ Jan 29th 2009 11:59AM
MULTITASKING iPhone PLEASE!!!
Kris @ Jan 29th 2009 2:54PM
Jailbreak! The Backgrounder application is quite handy. I've been multitasking for months now and it works great. The only issue is when I stream music and try to use the web browser it sometimes runs out of memory, but then the music just stops. More program memory, flash, and MMS (please MMS) is what I would like to see. I am so sick of entering in the message code/password on viewmymessage.att.com! At least I can paste it in with Clippy now.

- 1st spotting of the "iPhone 2,1" device occured in early October 2008
- Usage picked up in mid-December 2008
- A few dozen distinct "iPhone 2,1" devices have been detected
- Almost exclusively located in south San Francisco Bay Area
- Both AT&T and Wi-Fi connections
[MacRumors]
Apple employees chillin' around San Fran with this iPhone? Could it be the iPhone Nano everyone's been talking about, but Apple doesn't want to release it to the public?
AllCell @ Jan 29th 2009 8:28PM
First off! I have had every phone service out there! Verizon, Sprint, T-mobile, Nextel and AT&T. All these carriers have spotty coverage in some areas. Verizon has the best service, but I'm currently on Att. Verizon would completely ruin the iphone with their restrictions and boring interface that they kill every phone with! Verizon is not getting this one!! Keep dreaming!!
YOMAMA @ Jan 29th 2009 8:58PM
maybe Verizon has turned over a new leaf...
ha ;P
chanocular @ Jan 29th 2009 10:09PM
If (keyword is IF) there is to be an IPhone on Verizon, I'd imagine that Apple and Verizon would come to an agreement not to touch the phone's hardware or software, otherwise I believe that Apple would not allow Verizon to have it. 0.o
I can only hope.
Kaushlesh @ Mar 25th 2009 2:34PM
Never wonder if tomorrow Apple releases s/w 4.0 that unlocks some freak chip in your current Iphone 3G that will upgrade it to work with CDMA networks
