This form factor came way before the HTC Diamond, soo actually Engadget, you have your facts mixed up. So the Diamond is a touch up version of the Iolite.

The HTC Touch Cruise or Polaris had a second variant released in Febuary 2008 called the Orbit 2 (on O2's network) or the HTC Touch Find which sports the same casing. See http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=1307
