Nokia's
5800 XpressMusic (or the Tube, as we prefer to say) has been on sale in certain corners of the globe for a
few weeks now, but the touchscreen-heavy handset has just now made itself to US soil. Sadly, it lacks the support necessary for US 3G data, but those who simply cannot wait another day can hop a flight to O'Hare (or Midway, if you please) and snap up one of the Euro versions at the Chicago flagship store. 'Course, you'll get the US warranty and all, and you'll only be asked to hand over $349.99 to take one home. As of now, only the blue variant is in stock, and the NYC store is still waiting for shipment.
Update: It's available at the New York City store as well, so get your (European) S60 5.0 on, won't you?

Compared to the $500 these are fetching online (& blue is *even more* expensive) this is a great buy. Too bad I don't know anyone in Chicago...
Hopefully this means other retailers will be lowering their price. I'd love to give this phone a whirl.

Called up the Chicago store & they said they ship models that aren't readily available from the website (like the 5800). So I bought one. They were really cool, said they didn't charge shipping & went overnight if you bought accessories (who can't use more chargers?). Gotta give 'em an arm & a leg in terms of identification/scans, but they're not set up to ship normally so I didn't find it too surprising.

I've always wondered what the relative costs were of keeping two models instead of just using a tri-band chip. The tri-band chip would be more expensive per-unit but then that means you have to produce two separate models, complicating inventory management and production.
I figure since both HTC and Nokia are doing the 2+ models they did the calculations for themselves but then again tri-band 3G is a feature, though its hard to make a monetary case for more sales. Interestingly enough there were as many tri-band phones in 2007 (Kaiser/Tilt, K850i) but the trend now seems to be either way (X1a vs X1i, Fuze vs Touch Pro, Euro Nokia vs US Nokia) with a few tri-bands (iPhone 3G, Bold).
Of course then there is the T-Mobile 1700 headache...

They do, which is why the 5800 has both Touch and Stylus. That said, Nokia needs to do a better job marketing this, since there are STILL people who don't get it -_-

got mine last week.. kind of a disappointment.. the pictures taken with the 3.2 mp camera is not nice, no smileys for messages.. well, i'm disappointed..

noooo, it's very clear for E71.. indoor or outdoor.. my 5800 XM got all this purplish tint indoor and outdoor.. i wiped and wiped the lens thinking it might be all the finger prints, but apparently that's not the issue..

the only good thing i like about my 5800XM is it has wifi. i was about to get a BB storm, but it doesn't has wifi, so i like the stylus idea, too - sorry, santa :-) - but the camera.. urgh!.. oh, and someone in here was right about it being slow.. u know, going thru applications is kinda slow..

Hi, I am interested in purchasing this phone. I am pretty familiar with its functions and specs, but I had a question regarding the 3G. I have been an AT&T user for years and clearly comprehend that this will not work on ATT's 3G, but will work on ATT's slower internet. Will this work on T-Mobile's 2100 freq or not? I am willing to switch just because of this phone, but have also read something regarding two halves of the frequency and how EU phones will not work on the T-Mobile half. Does anyone have any concrete answers? Thanks.

i was actually at the flagship store in chicago 12/16, when the salesman told me the tube was only 350 my jaws almost dropped. i was so close to getting one, but the fact that i got my e71 a month ago and that it doesnt support us 3g made me save 350+ 10.25% tax.. (ya outrageous)
