Analyst predicts "significant" job cuts in January, possible price drops for Sprint

Not even a month after Sprint began offering voluntary buyout packages to an unspecified number of employees and just weeks after John Garcia decided it best to extend his Thanksgiving holiday into forever, in flies an analyst report asserting that sweeping layoffs are just around the bend. Pali Research's Walter Piecyk also expects the carrier to reduce prices to pick up lost ground to rivals AT&T and Verizon Wireless. A company spokesman proclaimed that "nothing was off of the table" and that "every option" would be scrutinized, but as of now, no decisions have been nailed down around the 2009 budget plan. Better get on that, wouldn't you say?

Sprint needs an exclusive phone that will entice people to dump their current carriers and go to Sprint. At&t has the iPhone. Verizon has the Storm. Tmobile has the G1. Sprint needs a few good exclusive devices or they will continue to be in big trouble.

I think you missed that part buddy. It might have been the case for about a week after it released, but not since then and especially now Samsung has released superior phones on T-Mobile and Verizon. Now, people do come to Sprint from AT&T/Verizon and pick up the Instinct, but not because of the Instinct (normally because of high prices, coverage issues, billing errors, just pissed off at said carrier, or deposits too high). It does a decent job of preventing people from leaving Sprint, but not bringing people to Sprint.

Sprint is bringing out a successor to the Instinct and another similar, smaller device so there will be multiple touch/exclusive phones for people to choose from.

Sprint may drop their prices? OMG the only reason i'm still with Sprint is the low price. If they lower the prices more i'll just be happy with whatever phone they have.

An HTC Touch HD running Android would probably get the job done, with a keyboard-sporting version as well, as long as they're priced reasonably.

Or they could get *really* radical and get HTC to make them some SIM card CDMA phones (no technical reason why this can't be done). That would get some jaws wagging, for sure.
