Nokia N96 firmware update makes overall experience smoother
Just days after groaning about Nokia's plans to shelve its v31 firmware update for the N95 comes an actual firmware update for the one-better N96. The v12.043 update is now available via the company's Software Updater application, and according to early reports, it makes the entire user interface faster to navigate, the camera a bit more accurate in focusing and the WiFi range more palatable. We can count three reasons you should be getting your download on right now -- do you really need another?

This phone was so DOA it hardly matters. As a huge Nokia/S60 fan I was just totally disappointed in this. Not only does the N85 have a better screen, same specs & overall smaller package, it's cheaper too! On top of that the 5800 makes folks who want a touchscreen happier.

Currently, the N96 has two reasons to exist:
1) 16GB onboard + 16GB microSD, for those who can't live with less than 32GB of storage;
2) DVB-H, if your carrier supports it.
I don't expect it to hang around much longer after the N97 goes on sale, however.

Is this for the U.S. version?

Doesn't look like it... We're left out for now!

Does the US EVER get firmware updates from Nokia?
Does it ever stop Engadget or these other blogs from telling those of us on the edge of anticipation that there is a new firmware available for us, the consumer, only to find out it wasn't for us, but for their super special pre-NAM version of the phone the blogger got from their buddy at Nokia???
Don't get me wrong, I love my E71, but if one more "report" comes out about firmware that I'm not privileged enough to have...I'm going' iPhone on their ass...

I don't have any buddies at Nokia, but I do have a trial N96 in my possession. The new firmware seems to have helped...nothing. It's still as slow as it always has been since I received it and I still wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It's still a complete failure as far as I'm concerned.
