T-Mobile Shadow II gets FCC-style unveiling
This thing's been in the pressure cooker for ages now, but it looks like T-Mobile might finally be getting within a stone's throw of actually releasing (or at the very least, announcing) the Shadow II, successor to the Shadow -- HTC's funky little Windows Mobile Standard slider targeted squarely at a consumer audience. The new model moves to WinMo 6.1 from 6 (we should certainly hope so), and as rumored, it appears to now support HotSpot WiFi-based calling. It's no G1 on the geek scale, but if you're looking to somehow strike a mythical balance between "cool" and "supports ActiveSync," we might just have your winner.

Word on the street is that this one will support Hotspot@home. +1 for UMA goodness. If it still has that crap OMAP850 in there, though, it will be one poor performing device.

Why T-Mobile can't take the Touch Pro or something like that and brand that a Shadow 2 or Wing 2 then I don't know what's wrong with them.

Can you put fring on it? If so, ditch hotspot@home and get a skype unlimited monthly calling plan for ~$3. Viola, instant wifi phone with unlimited local/long distance minutes (actually, it's 10000 but whateva).

I meant my reply about Fring to go here, as a response to you. Instead, its 4 posts down.

Everything will be decent until you read the fine print that its NOT a 3g phone. Why are they still sticking with Edge is beyond me. Grrrr!
superklye @ Dec 3rd 2008 1:32PM
Because they only have their marginal 3G service in like 20 cities.
I'm really hating T-Mobile more and more every day as non-delivered (both to and from me) texts continue to pile up, my ability to send email via Gmail's IMAP service continues to stop working after repeatedly resetting the account and I continue to get voicemails hours after I never received the call in the first place.
My phone (T-Mobile Wing) is on 24/7 and I restart it at least once a day. It's amazing to me that so many texts and calls are just lost.
Best. Service. Ever.

I like Windows Mobile Standard and find it great for one handed navigation, but the phone selection has always had phones with poor specs.

Is it still sporting a Suretype keyboard? I hate those things. Would be nice if they added a touch screen, too.

Screw Fring. Fring is for platforms that don't run Skype natively. WM has had *REAL* Skype calling via Skype Mobile for years now (been using it since at least 2005 if not earlier). I actually had such a solution for weak coverage spots and blogged about it a while ago here:

Plus, while you're at it, you might as well install something like Go-Sip or some other Softphone app compatible with standard SIP, and get a REAL voip service, such as Vonage or broadvoice. I do this occasionally to take my home phone with me when travelling. To be honest, I've found nothing beats just dialing from good-ol cell towers, unless the voip platform is integrated into the dialer to make it effortless. This is the case with @home, and what makes it great in my opinion.
