You forgot to mention this will only work on jailbroken phones.

from what i know the G1 isnt the iphone so i doesnt need to be jailbroken

Yep, Neerhaj is right, this can only be done on modified firmware. Anyone with the standard RC30 firmware is out of luck at this time.
