T-Mobile blowing out free Motorola ZN5s this weekend
Black Friday's turning into a Black Weekend for Moto and T-Mobile, it seems, with the just-released ZN5 already being discounted to a big, fat goose egg (after rebate, anyway) for the duration of the holiday weekend. That's down from $99 at launch, and a dang good deal considering that you're getting a WiFi-equipped phone with a 5-megapixel autofocus cam and xenon flash. We're still not sure we can forgive the gray / purple scheme, but if we could be reminded of just how insanely little we shelled out for the phone every time we looked at it, we could probably let it slide.

The best deal I can offer to Motorola is this: you pay me 200$ + 50$ monthly fee, and I may consider using your Fuglyphone

Oh come on people it is not that ugly! Besides, since when was black and purple that bad? It's not like they mixed barf orange and poop green. Let's put things into perspective.

I agree with Carcomptoy, Its a Full Featured Phone with lots of Bells and Whistles AND its Pretty Darn Handsome.
Besides I Love Purple so all ya'll can just STick it in your Back Pocket.
Peace!

Nice phone, too but I'm still in contract. :(
Oh well, I'll pick up a cheap on from craigslist later...

I'm currently reviewing a T-Mobile branded Motorola ZN5 - see my unboxing here: http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2008/11/03/unboxing-the-motorola-zn5-zine/ - and frankly I'm not very impressed other than the camera...
Keep an eye on my blog for a full review soon! In the meantime here's the gist of it:
- Awesome camera, up there with the Nokia N82
- Extremely decent music player/FM radio with standard heaphone jack
- Great reception/call quality and solid construction
- Micro-SD card and USB 2.0 mass storage support
- Full Bluetooth stack with ObEx transfer/sync, DUN tetehring, and A2DP stereo
Unfortunately, that's about it for the positives. T-Mobile has really locked this device down, making WiFi and EDGE almost useless:
- WiFi can't be used until you insert a SIM with a data plan
- WiFI is only useful to transfer pictures to the Kodak service or T-Mobile galley
- The web browser looks like crap and requires manually switching between EDGE and WiFi
- The email and IM client only supports a handful of preset services
- You can't use the email client to send pictures
- I'm pretty sure the IM client uses SMS instead of data
- You can install Java apps (Gmail, Gmaps, Opera) but you can't access the network with them
- You can't change APN/WAP settings to use the G1 or Total Internet data plans
- There's no unlocked firmware flashing solution yet

DUN Tethering available? Could you check to make sure? That would be great! I was told earlier that it was going to be disabled.
tnkgrl @ Nov 25th 2008 8:39PM
DUN tethering is common place on "dumb" phones. All you need is Bluetooth (or a USB cable + the right modem drivers) for your Mac/PC, a data plan on on the account associated with the SIM used in the phone., and your APN/WAP settings.
aaronforjesus @ Nov 26th 2008 4:25PM
The reason why I asked was that T-Mobile hath been disabling tethering on all their recent feature phones. See the SE TM506 made after October.
aaronforjesus @ Nov 26th 2008 4:36PM
Just to confirm, have you used the DUN on the phone yet? Sometimes when they are crippled, they will display in a bluetooth list, but when the dial-up is attempted, it will give an error message. Thanks!

will this be available over the phone, so as to avoid the upgrade fee? i would think the lines at the stores would be pretty hectic, and would want to avoid them if possible, especially in case they sell out..
