Virgin Mobile Canada lands BlackBerry Curve 8330
It's kind of scary to think just how long ago certain parts of the globe had access to RIM's BlackBerry Curve 8330, but for those with ample amounts of patience and a hankering to stick with Virgin Mobile Canada, today's your lucky day. As of now, the tried and true handset is available on the aforesaid carrier, though the price points aren't particularly awesome. Sure, $49.99 on contract sounds fantastic, but that's on a 3-year plan; a more manageable 2-year deal ups the price to $329.99, while it shoots up another $50 on a 1-year agreement. Yikes.[Via mobilesyrup]

You know, if you think about it, what's so bad about a 3-year contract? I've been with T-Mobile for 5-years, and haven't looked back. If you find a carrier you're happy with, then so what if you're on contract?

I agree with you in theory, I've been with AT&T for a number of years. However, I also want the option to jump ship at any time without penalty. Suppose they institute a stupid fee or policy that I do not agree with, or double my rates, etc.

Then in that case you are then able to jump ship, if they raise rates.

I know this thread will be filled with BB user's but I must say that I've had the benefit of throughly going through most, if not all, smartphone OSs and I must say that the BB OS is by far the worst Smartphone OS.
I've had to setup the Curve for a few people in our corporate office, so I've handled it quite a bit and quite frankly I don't think I'll ever use a BB as my primary device. But, I must say that the Storm is innovative and shows a lot of promise.
If there are any BB users reading this, is there something I'm missing about BBs? I'm asking sincerely if someone could respond. I didn't see anything special it did with emails that made it unique, and that seems to be the selling point.

@McLovin:
Uh, how about push email for any of your imap email accounts? About the only other real choice in doing that is Exchange, and not everyone wants to use that service. I run my Gmail account on my Curve, and it works flawlessly.
I'm actually new to the BB OS, having just purchased my Curve last week. After a slight learning curve (no pun intended), I am appreciating the power, stability, and speed of this device. That, along with the much better battery life than on WinMo devices. Bottom line is that the Curve being offered at this telco is another option for people. You can't go wrong with choices, as there is bound to be something for everyone out there in the cellular market.

You do realize that if you're in a contract and they do change a rate/fee/feature, you have the ability to leave the carrier due to that reason.
A contract works both ways, if you want out and they change the price of sms etc. Call em and tell em that's the reason.
Do most people not know this??

The 8330's OS and interface are decidedly frumpy no matter how one attempts to dress them up with fake themes that resemble OS 4.6 or whatnot. I jumped through all the hoops and finally returned the thing when it dawned on me that the keyboard was always going to feel like light, thin, cheap, wobbly plastic, and the interface was always going to be a fake themed version of the current RIM OS.
I don't think devices loaded with anything less than the current OS should still be getting sold to consumers, much less added as new products to a company's handset portfolio.
I say all this as a means of warning anyone off who falls for the "yeah, but it's still a BlackBerry, right?" trap that I allowed myself to fall for.
Thank god I took it back before my trial was over and my 2-year contract set in.
