Top five handset manufacturers get together for treehuggin' chargers
Nokia, Samsung, Motorola, LG, and Sony Ericsson probably don't see eye-to-eye on very many topics, but thankfully, they can all agree that Planet Earth is worth saving (or, at the very least, they can all agree that getting hated on by Greenpeace sucks). The five handset juggernauts have announced a common five-star rating system for phone chargers, making it easier for buyers to figure out which chargers consume the least energy; adapters that have features like automatic standby when the phone is finished charging will be awarded higher ratings. Nokia's been saying for some time that a ridiculous amount of energy is wasted every year by chargers that are idling their watts away plugged into fully-charged phones, so this could be a major step toward getting charger manufacturers to produce more advanced models en masse.[Via Phone Scoop]

How about we get common chargers so that we aren't tossing so many in the landfills? Yes I know, its huge profit center for them (cost of these chargers are .18-.25, don't ask me why I know this), but won't that be more earth friendly then worrying about the amount of electricity a charger uses?

More earth friendly - Less profit friendly. A company can only act like it wants to save the earth so much before the investors start to jump up and down chanting "More Money!!"

They all need to start using micro-USB as a charger tip. Then we all can be happy.

Well, the USB charger is not reliable as far as I experienced - I have a Nokia N85, and when I go to sleep and plug the charger into the phone it says "recharging", and when I wake up in the morning I have only 50% of the battery full, when before I plugged in the phone I had around 80%...
My wife on the other hand, got a Nokia 3120 Classic, and her charger (with the "regular" jack) has an interesting feature - when the phone finishes recharging, the charger puts himself off.

I agree micro or mini usb. i love being able to have just 1 power brick and one car adapter that can charge any of my devices with the same 1 or 2 cables. With just 2 cables i can charge my htc Touch Diamond, iPod, Canon Powershot, and many other devices. USB chargers kick ass.

Yes it does - I know my Macbook charger uses 0.5 watts when plugged in to the socket, without being plugged to a Mac. Same with the iPhone charger as well.

Can they all Agree to have a standard connector as well, so that we don't have to keep buying several chargers??
