AT&T Quickfire is, as promised, available

As previously foreseen, the UTStarcom Sidekick knock-off Quickfire, also known as the Knick, is now available online and in AT&T stores. It's quite a deal for new subscribers -- $99.99 with a 2-year contract, mail-in rebate (ugh) and promotion card -- or $299.99 without any of those discounts. In case your memory stinks, the Quickfire is a 3G device with a 2.8-inch, 240 x 320 touchscreen display, full QWERTY keyboard, and support for microSD cards up to 8GB. You're probably not reading this anymore because you're already on your way out to get one, right? Hello?
[Thanks, Jordan]

Wouldn't it be better to just get the Touch Pro?
LiqwidZero @ Nov 11th 2008 2:11PM
I suppose that would be a matter of money. This is for people like me, who have low income, but really want a good, sturdy phone.
If you get paid well, go with the HTC. Of course it's better.

you get the $50 "rebate" if you pay full price. so the ATT store guy told me. we'll see if i actually get it.
badqat @ Nov 11th 2008 6:12PM
The only requirement on the rebate was that you add/have a txt package on to the phone. So upgrade, new customer, or retail, you should get the rebate.

@ badqat
good point. but with a phone like that, it's tough to not have a text and/or media net package.
badqat @ Nov 11th 2008 6:21PM
I suppose one could potential use it without txt or Media Net...It does have a media player...but it wouldn't make much sense.
Are you still digging the phone?
whiplashchick @ Nov 11th 2008 6:29PM
yeah, so far, it's been great. i use it for news/scores browsing and it does great. Opera mini works best and looks better than the packed in browser.
hopefully there will be some more customization options. i wish i could change the icons on the front and delete some of the included apps.
and if it's popular enough, google will get on board with the OS and really make this phone great.

I hate to break it to you like this but the rebate does requires a 24 month agreement.
badqat @ Nov 11th 2008 8:23PM
@ fadi - I've got the rebate form right in front of me. There is NO requirement for a 24 month contract listed.

Got this yesterday for my 12 year old. Played with it a bit, and it's not that bad of a phone. Touch screen isn't iPhone perfect, but it's much better than I expected.
He's absolutely thrilled with it - loves it.

does it do email? i would hope so with that full qwerty, but wouldn't be surprised if it didn't with that low price.

anyone know if you can turn the 3g off on this phone? just curious, because i live in a "fringe" service area and would rather have the 3g off, than keep losing calls when it transfers from 3g to edge.

Just saw a youtube video on this phone. Not very impressed. I actually don't know why people like it. It's not very attractive, it looks huge, and it's got a locked down os. Oh well, to each his/her own.

I tested out this phone last night. It seems a bit on the juvenille side. Moreso than the devices it is trying to be (sidekick). The GPS is slow, and the browser, I could not launch it. Its GUI is rather bubblegummy. The touch screen is pretty decent and the screen itself if not bad at all.
The price point should be somewhere arounrd $80 though - as it is not worth $100, after rebates.

Yes, this is a phone for the teen/tween set. My 12 year old thinks it's the greatest phone ever. Which in my mind, is exactly what at&t was shooting for here.
However, others have said they dig it too. In just playing around with my son's, I will confess that it isn't a bad phone. Not my cup of tea, but still a pretty decent effort. And in terms of the demographic they're aiming for, they nailed it dead center.
