Sony Ericsson says UIQ is teh sux, probably doesn't bode well for platform's future

As part of its coverage of the Symbian Smartphone Show going down right now in London, All About Symbian is reporting that Sony Ericsson's Patrick Olson has declared UIQ "dead." Seeing how SE has always been UIQ's biggest proponent in the face of the much larger, much more influential S60, those are harsh, biting words that probably spell doom for the platform -- especially in light of the recent layoffs and integration with the Symbian Foundation as they push toward a single, unified Symbian stack. For what it's worth, there's no indication that Moto has given up on it, having just recently released the UIQ-powered Z10, but since when can Moto singlehandedly save a platform -- especially when they refuse to release the devices globally?[Via GSMArena]

It's been known since the symbian foundation announcement: get the best UI (s60) and fold UIQ techs into it.

For touchscreen devices UIQ is so much better than S60.

What great days where those when SE P800 was released!!!
The fail of UIQ only has only one face, Sony Ericsson himself....
A mobile company that wants to establish "their" platform cannot only release one device per year and sometimes with serveral setbacks...
For ex, Nokia release several devices per year, although too many, and this ways many people could choose from a wide array of solutions.

I'm glad it finally died, it's been on borrowed time for months. Slow, inefficient, buggy, overly complex, poor UI and difficult to develop for, I don't think it had any redeeming features.

Completely agree. It was basically clear for a long time, given that a small manufacturer like SE hardly offered any UIQ-based phones and Motorola's Z8/Z10 failed to gain any operator support...
