Windows Mobile ported to iPhone, we think
Most of the Windows Mobile / iPhone cross-breeding we've seen has either involved elaborate WinMo skinning or terrible iPhone KIRFs, but we suppose it was just a matter of time before Microsoft's mobile OS was made to run on Apple's hardware -- or at least that's what it looks like here. Pretty much everything about this video is suspect, from the shadiness of the MyPhone2008 conference it was shot at to the interviewer's ridiculously inane questions ("You don't have girlfriends in Norway?"), but damn if that isn't WinMo happily booting on what appears to be an iPhone 3G -- we can't tell, but it's a good bet it's jailbroken. The developer, Erik Kristiansen, says that mod is in beta right now but that he's looking at a January release -- we'll see what more we can dig up before then. Video after the break.
Update: As several commenters have pointed out, this has the trappings of a bad viral for the crappy SonicEmotion app also on that page -- all of the other videos are suspiciously fake / ridiculous, and the phone responds oddly to several touches. So much for that, we suppose.

Ew.. why.. why would someone do that..
No offense, but the iPhone is like a toy compared to other, more professional, smart phones out there. WinMo does not belong on that phone... iPhones cant even use a stylus >.
Ese @ Oct 13th 2008 12:28PM
Dude, a true touch phone, phone, should not require a stylus. WM have and will always require stylus's unless someone with the proper image in their minds redesigns it to be 100% user touch friendly like the iPhone. I used to have the iPhone and after that, switched back to Sprint after 2 months and got the HTC Diamond. I've had all prior WM devices offered by Sprint and even with HTC's Touch Flo 3D over WM, it still wasn't 100% touch friendly, and required the Stylus on some parts which was very annoying for a device portrayed as a "touch only" device.
You've obviously owned WM phones for so long, you feel the Stylus is a vital part of every day life, and while it is on WM devices, the iPhone's Thermo-Touchscreen is far superior over the Pressure Touchscreens found on all non-iPhone devices. A stylus is good for precision, yes. But for that same matter, a lot of us on the go don't have time to whip out a stylus and worry about the 2cm wide QWERTY key's on the WM keyboards, and don't like the accuracy of the Pressure Touchscreen phones on the Suretype style and 10key phone pad.'
Please stop making blanket statements and start making neutral statements if you can't give credit to both technology's where credit is due.

Whoa whoa calm down. My stylus comment was based on the fact that WinMo pretty much NEEDS a stylus, even if only once in a while. And the iPhone doesnt have a stylus, making the idea of putting WinMo on the iPhone even worse.
And also, I dont call the iPhone a toy because it doesnt use a stylus. I call it that because of all the many basic things its missing. Yet people still buy it, just because its a fashion statement, just because its apple.
Dont get me wrong, I think phones should be able to work without a stylus too, but until WM7 comes out, phones with WM will always need a stylus.
Actually, now that I think about it, the stylus will probably always be there, even if unnecessary for navigating the UI. Mainly because the asian countries would probably still want it to be able to write asian characters instead of typing in english.

LOL no offense, but why would I want to put that garbage WinMo OS on my iPhone?
Jeff @ Oct 13th 2008 10:38AM
Yes, iPhone can be considered a toy. But the power is there, and it's making leaps and bounds.
I sold iPhones to customers. Before the iPhone 3g, I would never recommend it for a business. If they wanted business power like exchange capabilities for their phones, like checking email and calendar exchange - I would always steer them to a WinMo device or Blackberry. Now, while I do not recommend the iPhone - I readily admit that it is capable to do those activities, and will fit their needs. It is no match yet for the BlackBerry, but it can compete with a WinMo device to some extent.
But it's not quite there yet. If they run a mac - it's perfect. If they run something else... Well, the iPhone will do it and do it well, but really - choose a tilt or a BlackBerry.
It's getting there though.
Now, as to this - why run WinMo on an iPhone??? Maybe only to have the best of both worlds at your fingertips (literally!)? So you can have WinMo's exchange power, but still have the status symbol? So you can change between OS's? I don't know. I understand it on a full pc, but I'm not sure on a mobile.
Nippero @ Oct 13th 2008 11:05AM
But the thing is.. WinMo still relies heavily on a stylus for a lot of things, and a iPhone cant even use one because of its capacitive screen.
The main reason the iPhone got so popular and changed so much is because of its nice UI, but thats about it from what I can see.
I think this is just one of the things people do just to say "Hey look what I did!"
Peter @ Oct 13th 2008 4:32PM
I actually use the Iphone for my work/fun device. I used to say that no way could it replace my blackberry or my Winmo devices. But it has. All I need is email search and little more calandar support and its there.
Ed @ Oct 13th 2008 11:47AM
Sweeeeet. Now the iPhone can run slow and buggy w/out any rhyme or reason at various times during the day. And now you can reboot it each day to get the apps working properly and memory leaks back in order. But since 96% of the apps have to have a stylus because of the poor planning and upgrading of the crappy OS after all these years, guess we're screwed.
And btw, I don't own an iPhone...don't like Apple....have an HTC Touch w/Verizon and can't freak'n wait for the BB Storm to come out!
Icchan @ Oct 13th 2008 1:00PM
its me or looks like a fake...
ismote @ Oct 13th 2008 1:00PM
Nothing suspect to me. If it's fake, give that kid an academy award for nailing the dorky, geeky, teen programmer role.
Olav @ Oct 13th 2008 1:22PM
My first thought was fake as well.. ..and it might very well be. But the crappy load of the homescreen and phone app is well emulated :)
tubsdouglas @ Oct 13th 2008 1:33PM
had not noticed the videos on the myphone2008 site. Wow that sound emotion video is ridiculous. Looks and sounds like a comedy troupe. I am gonna have to go ahead and see a real video of winmo actually working not just switching between a couple screens before i am convinced.
jconli1 @ Oct 13th 2008 1:37PM
OK, this is the perfect time to bring this up...
can someone enlighten me as to what's so great about WinMo?
I moved to a T-Mobile Dash after accidentally destroying my Symbian Nokia, and the last two years have been filled with me just looking at the phone and saying, "Are you serious?" Between the ridiculous menu layouts, instability, memory leaks, and completely random quirks here and there - I just don't get how anyone could be a WinMo fanboy. HTC made a damn fine phone, but the software just sucks.
That's why (big surprise) I'm on the G1 waiting list now.
wuzy @ Oct 14th 2008 2:03AM
It's almost the same reason why there are Linux fanboys. Everything is in constant motion.
When I buy a WinMo device I tend to think it as an empty shell with no OS loaded. I look up xda-dev to see there's good ROM development going before buying. Picking a good base hardware is also needed of course.
You can flash your Dash to WM6.1 easily. Just read the wiki the thoroughly before asking Qs.
Tor Slettnes @ Oct 13th 2008 2:43PM
Hmmm.. I'm Norwegian - that guy does not have a Norwegian accent. More like a German or Dutch one...
Just one more factor pointing towards a fake.
Court @ Oct 13th 2008 3:47PM
WinMo isn't bad. I have used it since it first came out in the form of handheld PC's. Since then I have used palm and blackberry devices only to go back to WinMo. Why? Because WinMo has everything. Sure it has problems, but I can do more with my winmo device then you can do with any other phone.
LivingNightmare @ Oct 13th 2008 6:09PM
It's a fake. I read the story linked from xda-developers and it's an obvious fake. They even updated the article to note that. The only reason windows mobile is buggy is that the wireless provider tends to bloat it out with their crap making it run less efficiently. I had the AT&T WM6.1 Rom on my phone and it just pissed me off. I decided to look into putting a cooked rom on the phone. I got a FREE unlocker and the HyperDragon III Rom from the xda-developers forum. I couldn't be happier. It's runs a LOT better and looks better too. True it's only running TouchFlo on top of the winmo interface, but touchflo makes it more bearable to run what I have on the phone. I can also customize it as I see fit just by making my graphics in photoshop and then uploading it to my phone. My Tilt now has a PS3 iconized interface that I designed.

Fake, fake, fake! Ever hear of just an iPhone SDK app playing a video? (Not the built-in app or else the screen touches would have pulled up the controls.) Or maybe it's just an app with simple graphics. After all, since when can you jump right to the calendar from there?! You have to go to the Start menu.
And just hw are they supposed to make WinMo 'Open Source'??!
Fake, fake, fake!
Oh yeah... fake!
Mark
P.S. Fake!
