Perhaps
"Sangria" was just a little too alcoholic for a teen-oriented device? Samsung's sliding QWERTY dumbphone for AT&T has been christened
"Propel," it seems -- and we've now gotten the word from two independent sources, so we're feeling pretty good about it. Until AT&T changes its mind, anyway. The phone looks halfway decent, appears to support AT&T Navigation, and at the $80 we're hearing AT&T will be asking for it out the door on contract after rebates, they could sell pretty well -- especially when you consider that they'll be available in red, green, and blue.

What.... group of people are behind the genius naming of these devices.. *roll eyes* Sigh

This is good news. As an agent, I sell whatever customers want, but feel a little offended when I see small, spoiled children make their parents buy them expensive smartphones, just so they can text more conveniently. It seems just plain wrong for a 10-year-old to own a Tilt, a device that's probably "too much" for most adult consumers, let along kids and teens. Hopefully, the Propel and other QWERTY dumbphones will help restore the order of the universe, with smartphones, music phones, feature phones, etc., going to those who would best utilize each.

I would have to definitely have to agree. It's nothing worst seeing something like this. The other article that engadget mobile released about the sidekick looking phone that ATT is coming out with would be a good choice for teen and kids I also think that would be very popular.

I'm in love with the form factor. When I first saw pics of the i620, I knew Sammy was onto something. Now I'm just bummed that it's on AT&T and runs WinMo -- two things I don't need any part of.
Will @ Oct 9th 2008 6:01PM
uh, did you read the article at all? it plainly stated that it was a dumbphone...meaning it won't be running winmo
frank @ Oct 9th 2008 8:18PM
Um, nope.

It doesn't have Windows Mobile. If it was a Windows Mobile device it would would have an "i" instead of an "A" at the start of the model name.

doesn't this look somewhat like the "blitz" already on Verizon? ... SNORE to both phones!!

nothing drives me crazier than to see an 9-10-11 year old with a blackberry. WHY on earth would you buy that phone and pay for a data plan + txt plan every month so your spoiled rotten brat can text to their hearts desire when they are supposed to be doing certain things during the day like um... learning stuff in school. Do 11 year olds even get email besides spam??
carcomptoy @ Oct 10th 2008 1:47AM
@Matt S - Are you seriously that ignorant? This is in no way, shape, or phone a Blackberry. It barely even remotely resembles one, and only because of a QWERTY keyboard, but come on, it's 2008 and every other phone has a full keyboard.
In any case, concerning whether or not this is a WM phone or dumbphone, the key thing is that it doesn't have a Windows logo or Home button on it--hence DUMBPHONE.
ashton @ Oct 10th 2008 6:26AM
I really don't think Matt S was comparing the Propel to a BlackBerry. I think he was just responding to an earlier comment regarding young kids with smartphones, and how the Propel will help prevent against that.
AT&T is really pushing the qwerty dumbphone niche now. LG Xenon, Pantech Matrix, now this.
