Emulator gives you the T-Mobile G1 experience now
Yeah, the wait for October 22 (or after) is absolutely excruciating; trust us, we know. We'll take every scrap of information and imagery we can to hold us over until G1s start showing up on doorsteps in a few weeks, but T-Mobile's really gone above and beyond the call of duty here by setting up a surprisingly functional and feature-complete emulator to satisfy our urges to touch icons and click buttons. Obviously, you're not going to get a GPS lock, so don't get your hopes up that you're going to be playing around with Street View or anything wild like that -- in fact, most apps lead you to a "this screen is not fully functional" message -- but it's got more goodies than the Android SDK's emulator, and it's just enough to get you acquainted with the phone's personality by the time it's actually in your paws.

That's really nothing to shake a stick at. It just looks like a modified SideKick... where's the really cool stuff? Is it streetview that this thing has to offer that's so amazing? I mean, the streetview thing is very cool, but... it just doesn't take my breath away. And really, proprietary headphones? Help me figure out what's so amazing about this phone, SOMEBODY PLEASE!!

I know its not an iPhone what were they thinking?

The draw is the open operating system. If you buy your phone based on how sparkly it looks, then stick with the iPhone. If you want a phone you can actually do whatever you want with, get the G1.

Yep, fully programmable is the key here. And you need a good platform to work on.
You will NEVER see a competent user on Android or WinMo (or even Symbian) running stock. Most of us are busy experimenting with different GUI and app to suit our preference and needs.
e.g. Manila 2D (extracted from HTC Opal ROM) totally transforms WM6.1 into an iPhone killer

Why are people so quick to jump to iPhone? I have an n95-3 and wouldn't beat an iPhone with someone else's... [fill in the blank]
So it's wide open then, thanks wuzy for actually getting to my question. I'll have check it out.

Now I know why Balmer was wrong about this being a v 1 OS. It looks more like .2 beta to me. I mean how infantile this is.

Is that how you make yourself feel better after getting suckered into an iPhone 3G with a two year contract? To be such an ass you must be trying to make up big for something...
chickenator @ Oct 5th 2008 3:18AM
yup it looks like i's version beta .2.
either way, 'baller' is wrong
squiggleslash @ Oct 5th 2008 9:54AM
Yes, you can really get that out of a crude Flash "emulation".
Geez people, this isn't the final phone, it's a flash preview. It's not even as sophisticated as the emulator shipped with the SDK.
