AT&T DataConnect overage: $480 per gigabyte
As much as we hate that true, no-strings-attached unlimited data plans are being killed off one by one, we appreciate that carriers have had the common decency (well, sometimes) to impose caps as "soft" ones -- going over repeatedly might irk 'em into throttling your bandwidth or tearing up your contract, but at least you wouldn't be getting a bankruptcy-inducing bill in the mail without any warning. Watch yourself, boys and girls, because that's now changed on AT&T, where the one and only domestic DataConnect plan offered for laptops -- 5GB for $60 -- now features an overage charge of $0.00048 per kilobyte. Running the numbers, that works out to a staggering $480 per extra gigabyte -- and on a laptop, a gig isn't hard to burn through at all. We guess AT&T would probably either cut you off or give you a call if you went way over, but by then, you've dug yourself a pretty deep hole. It's all pretty ridiculous, and we're hoping they're only a few lawsuits away from reconsidering the way they're handling this.
[Thanks, Bill]
Update: Several tipsters have written in to let us know that AT&T shuts you down after you've racked up $100 in overage, which seems awfully arbitrary. If we're seriously going to keep going with this per-kilobyte model, can we get a configurable hard cap or something? Thanks, everyone!

This is exactly what the fed should be stepping in to prevent during the current economic down turn. AT&T should not be allowed to license public airwaves when they promote such anti-consumer behavior, particularly during a time when the US economy needs as much innovation, and open communication as possible. Data connectivity should not be a burden, but a springboard for everyone.
AT*T, you disgust me.
Where is the FCC on this? Can they even do anything about it? And Congress, why not?
Jeffrey @ Oct 4th 2008 7:54PM
att has their data overage capped to $99. your data charge can't go over $99 even if you have pay-per-use on a regular cell.
Vic @ Oct 4th 2008 10:20PM
Once Sprint/Clearwire roll out XOHM in more markets, that should not only force AT&T to bring back "unlimited," it should also lower prices and offer affordable no contract options.
billj63 @ Oct 5th 2008 3:50AM
If I could just say.. in response to Jeffrey..
AT&T definitely doesnt cap it at $99.
Working at a store... I've seen bills that almost hit a thousand dollars from internet usage @ 1cent/kb
Colonel Kernel @ Oct 6th 2008 2:05AM
AT&T tried to charge me $1300 for per/kilobyte data usage when I was supposed to be on a $25/unlimited plan.
So unless that "capped at $99" is in writing, you'd be a fool to believe it.
yo @ Oct 4th 2008 7:38PM
att has data overage capped at $99. so your air card would at the most be $99
Colonel Kernel @ Oct 6th 2008 2:11AM
Nonsense. I signed up for an ulimited plan that was never set up right. I then racked up $1300 dollars in charges in less than a month.
No cap for me. No cap for you.
Mike @ Oct 4th 2008 7:40PM
This type of product is not designed for anyone who's seriously going to be using more than 5GB's a month. Consider an alternative. It's not anti-consumerist, it's anti-abusive use of a service.
beginner @ Oct 4th 2008 8:44PM
Can't you get one of those cell phone 3G data plans and connect your laptop to your cell phone (using bluetooth or something), and use 3G internet that way?
michael @ Oct 4th 2008 9:09PM
you mean netshare app for iphone? thats been banned from the app store by apple?
GBallew @ Oct 4th 2008 10:23PM
Why do you automatically jump to the effin iPhone!? There are plenty of other 3G devices out there, the iPhone's not the only one.
SimbaDogg @ Oct 4th 2008 10:23PM
@michael
seriously...he asks a question and the first thing you think about is the stupid iphone and its application? its called TETHERING. and literally hundreds of phones on the market still do it. does EVERYTHING in this world have to revolve around the iphone w/ some people? jesus h christ
(sorry i'm bitter, but i'm just so damn sick of that phone and people who consider it the end all/super jesus phone)
Nippero @ Oct 4th 2008 11:06PM
No probably the apps for WinMo phones. You know, the ones that don't have apple shoving a stick up their ass :P
Nippero @ Oct 4th 2008 11:06PM
Whoa, others got to it before i noticed.
SimbaDogg @ Oct 4th 2008 11:45PM
iphone lovers are sheep...sheep i tell you.
AT&T Anonymous @ Oct 4th 2008 8:59PM
There is no way AT&T will call you if you go over, or cut you off, they'll just bill you! It is very possible for consumers, using 1 computer, doing completely legal things to top that 5GB plan, but not many... Thanks AT&T!
Will @ Oct 4th 2008 9:30PM
i promise you, they cut you off at $100 in data overages. so unless you know what you're talking about, stay quiet next time
Colonel Kernel @ Oct 6th 2008 2:25AM
Will, when telling someone they don't know what they're talking about, it is vital that you do. You don't.
Last summer, thinking I had an unlimited data plan, I began to explore the internet in earnest. For less than a month of data use, AT&T attempted to charge me about $1300.
No cap. No call. No nothing. I only found out when I tried to access my AT&T customer account from my Treo 650 (I could, btw).
I surely hope that AT&T has learned their lesson, as this and the ensuing fiasco cost them my family's business. But until it is spelled out clearly in writing, any claim that AT&T caps data overages is laughable.
Shana @ Oct 7th 2008 8:08PM
Colonel Kernel,
If you knew your info instead of spewing bull. You would know that as of 8/25 shortly after they cut off soft limits they instated the 99$ cap for overages.
So, if you DON'T KNOW YOUR FACTS SHUT YOUR MOUTH.
Steve-O @ Oct 4th 2008 10:20PM
ahahaha love the picture on this post. On a serious note, 5Gb of bandwidth a month is wayyyy too little for a person that does any sort of multimedia or filesharing (legal or not) on their computer.../b/
fh @ Oct 5th 2008 6:51AM
Looks like you just accidentally your whole quota. You should be worried, it looks dangerous.
mingkee @ Oct 4th 2008 11:25PM
just wish T-Mobile has more 3G coverage as it's rapidly spreading
it's not yet official, G1, total internet, bb, VPN will be limited at 10GB, after that, you only get GPRS/EDGE performance till the billing cycle is over
And yet.. @ Oct 5th 2008 4:34AM
Umm...I hope your tipsters triple checked their facts cause as far as I'm aware, that $100 limit ONLY applies to medianet on a PPU (pay per use) basis .ie: Browsing from your phone over WAP.
Colonel Kernel @ Oct 6th 2008 2:37AM
Nope. "Browsing from [my] phone over WAP" is exactly what happened to me. Being charged per kilobyte, when I was supposed to be on an unlimited data plan, I used up over $1300 worth of data.
Until AT&T puts the words down on paper, don't believe them.
GhostDoggy @ Oct 5th 2008 9:06AM
Imagine this. AT&T Wireless' network is no different from T-mobiles network, which means the tower-to-edge device is based on multiple T1 facilities. This means that within a 'cell' there will be more often a condition in which two or more 3G'ers will be attempting to conduct bandwidth activities they cannot truly support.
In order to minimize this potential customer-impacting experience they'll simply discourage the 3G goodness instead of sufficiently upgrading their networks for larger pipes at the cell. No telco has a history of proactively upgrading their networks. That's a cowsumer misconception being bought into.
Moo
Matt @ Oct 5th 2008 9:26AM
How the hell do you people expect a carrier like att to "sufficiently upgrade their networks for larger pipes at the cell" when people keep bitching about price. Being a network engineer you people have no idea how expensive this stuff is. (including myself - I make almost $100/hour on contract). And as far as upgrading their networks, I've spent the last year of my life upgrading AT&T's network from EDGE. You people expect everything to be super fast all the time and yet you all bitch about price. Speed = $$$. I would think you people would understand that. Especially when we all know we are dealing with a business. These networks are not a charity for you to access. And BTW.... Verizon has had a 5Gb cap for almost two years...... its time you little whine-bags get over yourself. If you're so smart and know how things should be, then grow up and start your own company and do things differently instead of complaining on forums all day.
Julian Fang @ Oct 5th 2008 1:38PM
If AT&T DIDN'T cap the overage charges/usage, you'd be screaming bloody hell. AT&T caps the overage...and you scream bloody hell.
The moral of the story...AT&T can't win regardless of what they do.
bernardino @ Oct 5th 2008 4:35PM
If I knew I was being charged per kilobyte, I would stop using the service. I think much fewer people would be upset if they knew when they were using minutes included in their post-paid plan or minutes billed per kilobyte.
bernardino @ Oct 5th 2008 3:01PM
I think AT&T could lower prices by firing all their $100/hour engineers and hiring a bunch of engineers from India who work for $15/hour!
Johnny @ Oct 5th 2008 7:10PM
$480/Gig? Have you seen what we're charged here in Canada for data over the limit - Telus charges $8/MB. That works out to $8,192/Gig. On some rate plans, the $8/MB kicks in right away if you're tethering, as tethering is excluded from the base data plan. How'd you like to see that bill ?
Mr E. @ Oct 5th 2008 8:42PM
Where are all the people screaming about vzw being more expensive?
Seeing how VZW charges 25cents /MB vs AT&T 49~cents/MB hmmmmm..
where ya at now???
livinonnosleep @ Oct 6th 2008 9:13AM
Either way the point is don't use your mobile internet like your home internet. I have yet to surpass my limit on my card and i use it a fair amount. Just not for file sharing or any other data hog there is on the internet. I'm with vzw so the prices are similar. last i checked there were still people who didn't use the internet at all and guess what? they survived a whole month! The real issue is weather or not it is disclosed to you and i'm pretty sure if you actually read your terms and conditions of service, like you should, its in there. If you don't like it then cancel within whatever grace period they give you.
iansilv @ Oct 6th 2008 2:12AM
Engineer guy- WAAAAHHHH!!!!
I call BS- the tower build-outs are capitalized and are realizing a positive cash flow. Quit bitching- ATT needs to upgrade their shit. Nuff said!
Oh- and for anyone who does not believe me- why the hell was Sprint recently able to sell their towers to a leasign company? because they were paid for!!!
This crap is pure profit. In this economy- get ready for regulation bitches!
bobolito @ Oct 6th 2008 10:34AM
Let's watch the math here:
1 Megabyte = 1024 Kilobytes
1 Gigabyte = 1024 Megabytes
That being said:
$0.00048 x 1024 = $0.49152 per Megabyte (49.1 cents per megabyte)
Therefore,
$0.49152 x 1024 = $503.32 dollars per Gigabyte
Chris Ziegler @ Oct 6th 2008 10:38AM
Right -- I used the more optimistic hard drive manufacturer definition of a megabyte and gigabyte here. Either way, it's darned expensive.
jsh4ft @ Oct 6th 2008 12:40PM
Somebody help me out here?
Will this affect the 19.99 a month unlimited media net plan on my N95 3G ??
I don't think so but I'm a bit nervous as I just added that to my plan...
trueone55 @ Oct 6th 2008 4:16PM
Does this mean that at&t's TOS is changing? And if so can i jump ship from my laptop connect contract?
Arnaud @ Oct 6th 2008 11:21PM
Can you use the "PDA Personal" $35 plan without the tethering option and connect via your device (bluetooth) ? That plan is still unlimited. How would ATT know the difference?
