Clear as mud: Samsung i907 "Epix" is AT&T's version of the i780
Okay, bear with us here, because the road to this device is a winding one, to say the least: first, there was the Samsung i780 that launched in Europe. It was informally and unofficially branded the BlackJack III, thanks to its obvious resemblance to Samsung's own BlackJack series that has been a stalwart of AT&T's 3G lineup since its early days. More recently, we caught wind of an i907 that would be launching on AT&T's airwaves in the next few weeks; thanks to the model number's proximity to that of the i900 Omnia, it didn't take long for rumors to spread that it'd be an AT&T-branded version of the i900 -- but a counter-rumor claimed that it would actually take the form of the good ol' i780. A training pamphlet now circulating seems to have sealed the deal that this will, in fact, be a tweaked i780, which means we can expect Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, a full QWERTY keyboard, optical mouse, and HSDPA. What's more, the "Mirage" name we'd heard seems to have been tossed out for the way (way) cooler "Epix." Still no word on an exact release date or price, but considering the hefty specs we're expecting and the smartphone label, we're not exactly counting on a free-on-contract deal here.

October 23rd... Interesting, just one day after the T-Mobile G1 gets released.
I would never trade my Q 9h for this.

is it me or the majority of the new smart phones coming out either look like the back jack 2, curve, or iphone ?

Very tempting to get this. I just hope it's no more expensive than $200 because that would be a deal breaker for me.
Meccalangelo @ Oct 2nd 2008 10:43AM
The screen on that thing looks smaller than the screen on the actual i780 judging by the space where the At&t logo sits.

I would be very surprised in AT&T introduces the Samsung Omnia. It is similar in design to the iPhone and aimed at the same market, and AT&T has shown little interest in offering strong iPhone rivals. For example, it never picked up the original HTC Touch, and so far has shown no interest in the HTC Touch Diamond.

nor the Touch HD. For WinMo phones they stick with the bulky-type HTC phones like the Touch HD/Tilt...etc. so they dont infringe on the iPhone's market. I think its a disservice to AT&T customers to not offer what is out there, and give us the choice. Honestly, if someone wants an iPhone, they're going to get an iPhone. I'm fine with them training salespeople to sell iPhones, but they should give us the right to choose from ALL the top of the line handsets on the market (exclusivity notwithstanding).

Omnia is still coming to ATT but it will be called the Infinity and as stupid as it is for the European Omnia being the i900 and then are i907 being this samsung i788 look alike... but I am a Radioshack employee at store 01-4465 in charlesotn west virginia and my ATT Rep showed me and are staff the upcoming handsets and the Omnia is on there but its the Infinity
guy_interested @ Oct 30th 2008 6:58PM
Any idea on when the Infinity will launch?

I don't see where it shows that the Samsung Epix is the i907. If you have a picture or proof of this why aren't you showing this?
AshDizzle @ Oct 2nd 2008 7:21PM
I am thinking the same thing as Sean Allen... where does it say ANYWHERE that the EPIX is the i907? So far all I have seen is that BGR is claiming it is, but it just doesn't make sense that the i907 would be something other than the Omnia/Mirage.
Think i600/i607... i900/i907? I don't see why they would deviate from their numbering pattern.
Maybe I'm missing something here, but can anyone shed some light?
m.carroll @ Oct 2nd 2008 11:27PM
i think they're grabbing that number from the leaked timeline sheet, which shows a release date of the same day. who knows, they could be dropping 3 huge phones on us. the touch pro (fuze), omnia, and epix ?!?!

Headline: Ex-Motorola Product Managers Overthrow AT&T Branding Department!
New Phones to be named: Fuze, Epix, Def, Dum and Lowd.
Reorganization of wireless operations and re-naming to "RingBrik" to follow.

@ laxhornet:
Sorry, you made this too easy. Do humans not all resemble one another; in that we have heads, bodies arms and legs? It's evolution. If it works it survives. I suspect the future of phones is a touch screen like the iphone with a full qwerty keyboard(like the touch pro). I could be wrong as it depends on the hardware durability(another hinge and electrical connection), and whether people like a virtual keyboard or not. I'd personally love to see it all make more sense with everthing being seperated for easier upgrading. Something along the lines of a mobile display device that accepted/transmitted universal wired and wireless protocols, communicator device, and human/computer interface device to integrate it all (preferably in software form). Eventually they will resemble our bluetooth headsets, I'm sure.

Ya thats true...

I was re-downloading xpressmail on the AT&T website. When I told it I had a Samsung, they included the i907. Shows exactly as the picture above. Says WM6 Professional in the description, so basically it looks like a touchscreen Blackjack. The touchscreen alone is a huge step forward from the current Blackjack.
mikey @ Nov 30th 2008 10:54PM
I got an Epix and its pretty cool -- I even sound a really cool OS X Leopard theme for it at http://www.mysamsungepix.com .. My main gripe is the touchscreen - doesn't seem as responsive as i'd like it to be.
