Megapixel race hits the mobile realm
When the megapixel race unofficially started in the point-and-shoot world, it didn't take long before every last camera manufacturer out there was cramming 14-megapixel sensors into any ole pocket cam. Now, it seems the same race is headed to the mobile realm. Of late, we've seen a new batch of 8-megapixel handsets and a 9-megapixel sensor, and a recent interview with LG's sales and marketing director John Barton points to even more of those in the near future. According to him, "the megapixel race that we saw amongst camera makers is now being battled out between mobile manufacturers," hinting that 10+ megapixel phones (not to mention handsets with HD video capability) are closer than we may have imagined. Mmm, the possibilities.

Too bad that theres not a SINGLE camera phone yet that beats even a cheap standalone 5 megapixel camera.
Samsung keeps churning out 8 mp phones with LED flashes....wheres the xenon? The N82 is nokia's only xenon equipped phone. Sony seem to have lost the plot as well. The C905 looks alright but I get the feeling it should have been out in the first quarter of this year.
Consumers keep buying into the megapixel nonsense and wonder why their pictures look like shit even though they paid a bomb for their new phone.

Well said, I was going to post something similar but you said it.
High megapixels doesn't necessarily mean high quality pics.

Agreed. If these manufacturers want to match point and shoot camera performance, throw me some freaking optical zoom and xenon flash... I currently use a N82 and while it does have xenon flash, having no optical zoom is TERRIBLE. I wish I dropped $100 more and got the Samsung SGH-G810...

The Megapixel race always existed, since the first SE K750 with 2mp. The only thing is that now nokia started to stop it, usi ng only 5mp for ma while. But it didn'tworked
