iPhone gets tweaked Safari in firmware 2.2
We're going down our "things that absolutely must change on the iPhone" list, and yeah, "redo the Safari toolbar" isn't anywhere on there. Not even at the very bottom. Cupertino works in mysterious ways, though, and they've decided in firmware 2.2 that it's time to muck with the positioning of the text boxes so that the address bar and search bar both appear at all times without needing to first tap in the area. They've also moved the refresh button inside the address bar itself, which should truly revolutionize our browsing experience yet again. Apple, screw copy / paste -- we're officially stoked.

This is a pretty big piss off. What the hell Apple doing waiting to put copy and paste on the damn phone I don't know.

If they didn't add copy and paste until this point, there's a very small chance they'll ever add it in a firmware update.

Sure why fix the lack of something as simple as copy and paste or i dunno, flash maybe when we can move the refresh button from outside the address bar to inside of it!? Wankers...

Apple still a bit fruity about the needs of mobile users.
Drew @ Sep 28th 2008 10:20AM
I agree, who cares! My iPhone works great. I've never had the need for copy/paste. Do other smart phones have this or are people asking for something unusual?
ndcart @ Sep 28th 2008 12:06PM
Of course other smartphones have it, and I use it all the time on my windows mobile device.

Anyone that has EVER received an MMS on your iphone knows the NEED for copy/paste. In case you don't have the iPhone, or have never received an MMS on it, here's how it works:
"Hey, Paul! I just got a multimedia message on my iPhone!"
"Really, what is it?"
"Not sure... just a sec...
Let's see... click the little right arrow to open a web page to viewmymessage.com. Shut down Safari, open back up my text message. Username is x371tuivw. x371tuivw, x371tuivw, x371tuivw, x371tuivw... I can remember it... x371tuivw, x371tuivw, x371tuivw, shut down SMS... x371tuivw, x371tuivw... open Safari... click username box... type x371u... u.... DAMN! Shut down Safari... open SMS... x371tuivw... I knew that... ivw... ivw... ivw... shut down SMS... open Safari... type in ivw.... got it... now password. Shut down Safari... open SMS... deal8cow... deal8cow... deal8cow... Who comes up with these silly things? deal8cow... shut down SMS... open Safari... deal8cow... deal8cow... click on password... type in deal8cow. Cool... Wait for it... waaaaait for it. You would think it would be faster, but MAN viewmymessage is a slow freakin' site! Wait for it... wait for it... HERE IT IS! WOW! It's my new niece! She is sooooo cute! Look at that little face! Aw man, check this out."
"Wow, she really IS a cute kid. Can you forward that to me?"
"Sure! What's your email address?"
"What do you mean, just send it to me... you have my number."
"Well, viewmymessage doesn't have contacts... no, wait... I can do this...
Let's see... minimize Safari... open contacts... Ok... Paul... Paul... Paul... HERE IT IS! Ok, 8285556787. So you're on Verizon, right? So that's 8285556787@vtext.com. Cool. Minimize contacts... open Safari... forward message... 828555... what was it? Oh yeah... 6787... shift... @... shift... vtext.com. GOT IT! Comin' at'cha, buddy!."
wait for it...
"Dude... that's a text message, not the pic. I wanted the pic."
"Oh yeah, it's vzwpix, not vtext for photos... sorry. Forgot.
Back... forward... 828555.... 6... 6... oh yeah... 6787... shift... @... shift... vzwpix.com. Ok... NOW you should have it!"
DING
"Aw, she is REALLY cute! Look at that face!"
"What, you already have it?"
"Yeah, right here. I'm going to send it to my mom and sister. They'll love her. Let's see. Forward. Add contact... mom... sis... send. They'll love it."
"Damn."
DING
"Oh, look! Sis and mom were together! Sis sent a photo of mom looking at the photo of your niece! She's crying. That is SO like mom... want me to forward it to you?"
"No. I don't have that kind of time."

@Bill Grove:
true. true.
but you can tweak your typing! yes, to get that @ in the email address just 1 second faster, instead of doing "shift.... @.... shift", you can just hold shift down, *drag* your finger over to '@' and let go. also works for punctuation like ! or ?, and in the address bar you can hold down the . to slap in a .com or .net, etc.
isn't that totally amazing? and doesn't it absolutely eviscerate the need for copy/paste? hellz yeah!
iphone non-smartness stokage++....
i should pick up an e71...

I feel cut/copy/paste is what really defines a smart phone. That's what Win Mo, Blackberries, Palm OS, and Symbian phones do. All others are a dumb phones or multimedia phones that can surf the web, play media, and sync information.
wuzy @ Sep 28th 2008 4:32PM
Exactly. iPhone is nothing more than a dumb/multimedia phone thanks to Apple's NDA on iPhone app development.
They are no better than clones running Windows CE 6.0 that has interface as good as iPhone for much less price. Slap Apple brand on it and people take notice, sheeesh.
And for those users smart enough to utilise resource found in xda-developers the options for Windows Mobile is limitless. Program it as you like, the way you like, whatever you can imaging, it's all possible. No stupid NDA!
Jim Smothers @ Sep 29th 2008 12:07PM
And the iPhone can't even sync calendar data!
JonnyBruha @ Sep 29th 2008 11:05PM
So now Safari has lost 15% of the real estate on the screen so that you could see the URL bar at all times?
Yes, this is MUCH more important than copy/paste.
