Apple now selling iPhone 3G unlocked in Hong Kong
"iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation."Unfortunately for the 1 billion mainland Chinese, the terms and conditions limit sales to those in Hong Kong only -- not that the gray market cares about T&Cs. It'll be interesting to see if Apple extends the unlocking more broadly (presumably as exclusivity deals expire) or if this is strictly a local phenomena, perhaps in direct response to having its WiFi and the imperialistic 3G gutted from handsets sold under Apple's rumored China Mobile deal.

In HK which is parallel import paradise, it is easy to expect we will re-export it next day. We have over hundred years experience in doing that!

After the phone has been activated in HK with a local carrier, can it be use in US for example on T-Mbile network? Because I travel a lot, restricting sim card hesitated me to drop for a iPhone 3G.

ANY carrier. Buy it, take it home, activate it there with your own SIM and you're good to go.

I think HK case is different
in other place, even it is unlocked, it comes with contract / pre-paid credit, for HK case, you have nothing bundled at all
The phone need not to be activated @ carrier at all, my colleague get an iPhone shrink wrapped from factory, send by courier japan and activated there and no problem at all
