Casio goes insane with 2-inch, 960 x 540 pixel LCD
To put Casio's achievement into perspective, those 7-inch PMPs and UMPCs generally equipped with 800 x 480 LCDs are now kicking the dirt in embarrassment at being outdone by the pixel density of Casio's new 2-inch display. Using a proprietary Hyper Amorphous Silicon TFT (HAST) LCD, Casio achieves a 960 x 540 pixel resolution resulting in 546 pixels per inch supporting 16.8 million colors -- hoozah! Although not announced, we'll undoubtedly see these in future NTT DoCoMo superphones just as soon as these displays hit mass production.

Although this is pretty cool, I'm afraid it's not really that important for people since, on a 2" screen, even qvga is enough.
But I have to say it's quite a technological achievement.

PPI too small? Hold the screen closer!
These day VGA is the absolute minimum.

That would mean a 4" screen could be in HD (if they can pull it off doubling their numbers) 1980x1080.

At 546 ppi, this is too dense for me since I can no longer focus much closer than 10". But if you can focus down to 6.3", then why not? I'm fine with around 200-300 ppi myself so this screen at around 4" (with a viewing distance of about a foot) would be great.
d = 60 / (atan(1deg)*ppi) is the distance to view for 60 pixels per degree.

I couldn't agree more. This ppi is way over the top. The pixels are way too small for any real utility.

That's very interesting. Human vision has a real-world limit of about 300 ppi in both the X & Y axis at a standard reading distance. This screen easily exceeds that. I didn't expect this to happen for some time. With any luck they will be able to scale this technology for larger displays.
Where did they get 546 ppi in the original post? I got ~550 ppi (550.7267925 ppi, to be more exact).
