T-Mobile's data coverage maps now have added 3G flavor

Check it out, from this zoom level Chicago's looking flush as far as T-Mobile 3G is concerned -- yeah, that's right, it seems they've gotten to a point where they're actually willing to show it off. We're betting T-Mobile's Android-based G1 announcement that's set for tomorrow was the impetus for this update, and we suspect we'll learn more about the network then. Feel free to put the site through its paces in your neck of the woods and let us know if you're one of the lucky places. Hit the read link to play with the map, but make sure you tick the "data coverage" option at the bottom of the page first.

Hmm. Nothing here in the Salt Lake City area. That's too bad; I was hoping to get 3G with my new Android whatever.
Maybe maps aren't complete? Or they'll be rolling out in more cities as time goes on?

"Q: The perception of our 3G coverage seems to focus on one city in a
metro area. Are we going to offer separate coverage maps for UMTS
cells using different/more detailed specifics such as ZIP codes?
- Dan Wiley, Leasing Specialist
A: Dan, thanks for this important question about how we will
depict 3G coverage to improve our customers' experience. The
Personal Coverage Check (PCC) tool will be updated this month to include
3G coverage. The PCC update adds a new map to illustrate 3G high-speed
data coverage in conjunction with existing EDGE/GPRS coverage."
I asked that question a few weeks ago. That was me, your welcome!

I am pretty impressed with the 3G coverage that T-Mobile has in the surrounding suburbs of Chicago. Took them long enough, but looks like they are going to roll this network out nicely from the start.

Blanketed in Northern NJ. Will check out the Dream/G1 when it comes out and think about switching.

So far my K850 has only recognized AT&T's 3G in Tempe, downtown Phoenix, and North Phoenix... No T-Mo yet.
redringofdeath @ Sep 22nd 2008 10:43PM
Your K850 will never get Tmo 3g because it's not compatible with the AWS 1700 band used by their 3g network.
Michael M @ Sep 22nd 2008 9:33PM
Yup Yup!
3G coverage for me! Can't wait to get my G1.

@Lucas_Once.
Unfortunately you will not pick up any of T-mobile's newly added 3G spectrum with you current handset b/c they are using non-standard 3G bands for service (1700/2100). That was pretty much all that was available to them, after all Sprint and AT&T have been around for ages early digital and analog days so they had plenty to go around. Might look into getting the Sony TM506 or the new G1 if you want T-Mobile 3G compatibility.

No 3G in OKC yet, or anywhere in Oklahoma...
And to to think only 5 months ago I lived in a place now completely covered in Tmo 3G (northern LA)

I don't get it. I'm in the suburbs of the bay area outside of San Francisco, and there's 3G coverage in a wide radius. Yet, in a big city like Sacramento, there's none. I don't get it? Are they going to expand the coverage soon?
lgrunauer1 @ Sep 23rd 2008 10:11AM
An interesting thing happened to me yesterday. I went to a Tmo store here in Miami and asked one of the technicians (not a sales person) if Tmo's 3G would work with the new iphone 3G (just as I showed him my 1G unlocked iphone) and he told me that it would definately work!!
I have read several articles that mention Tmo's 3G isn't on the same band as the iphone, but has anyone been able to really test if it works??

this is such a turn off:
"3G coverage is available only in certain markets. See coverage map. If your total data usage in any billing cycle is more than 1GB, your data throughput for the remainder of that cycle may be reduced to 50 kbps or less. Your data session, plan, or service may be suspended, terminated, or restricted for significant roaming or if you use your service in a way that interferes with our network or ability to provide quality service to other users. "
1GB of traffic/month?
Any of you guys know if AT&T has this kind of restrictions?
manny @ Sep 24th 2008 8:24AM
i'm 3weeks into my at&t billing cycle and I've used 2GB of data and i still have my full 3G connection. I think at&t might have a cap but its like verizon which is 5GB per month which is more than plenty for even heavy data user. 1GB is nothing for a heavy data user and most people getting the G1 will be younger people which are the heave data users.
