T-Mobile to have 3G live in 21 markets by end of October

If you've invested in one of those Sony Ericsson TM506s being offered by T-Mobile, it certainly helps if you've got some place to take advantage of its carrier-first HSDPA support -- and while it's going to be a while (a good, long while) before you find it blanketing every square inch of T-Mobile's coverage, you'll at least have a few more cities in which to play by the time that all-important G1 launches next month. Thirteen cities have officially launched so far, with another 8 coming online in the coming weeks, another 7 beyond that by the end of the year, and "meaningful expansion to additional customers and markets through 2009." In case you'd like 'em to be showing a little more hustle here (and who wouldn't?), it looks like the government is still holding things up; T-Mobile specifically mentions in its press release that it's continuing to "work closely and effectively together" with the Departments of Commerce, Justice, and Defense to speed things along and free up AWS spectrum as quickly as possible. In the meantime, follow the break for the full list of cities that'll be 3G-ready by the end of 2008.Currently live:

- Minneapolis
- New York (including northern New Jersey and Long Island)
- Phoenix

Tmobile coverage map is up and shows where 3g is available. It even says 3g is live in chicago already. I was wondering if anyone had a 3g phone in chicago to test this out.

you can now check your t-mobile 3g coverage on their website, just check to display 'data coverage'

the government most likely has not cleared the spectrum for the DC market yet, T-Mobile is flipping the switch on 3g markets as the government lets them. If you read the press release you will see "T-Mobile and the U.S. government, namely the Department of Commerce, Department of Defense and the Department of Justice, continue to work closely and effectively together to make available AWS spectrum that will give our customers access to T-Mobile’s 3G network."

Memphis is the largest city in state of Tennessee, have total population of 674,028, and the 18th largest city in the US, right behind Fort Worth, Texas. Fedex Corporation headquarters is based in Memphis, and First Horizon National Corporation.
Memphis International Airport is the world largest airport by cargo traffic, UPS second largest hub is also in Memphis.
Do you even know how many people live in Memphis's metropolitan area? Is well over 1 million, and kept increasing.
I live in suburb of Memphis, and I can't wait for 3G!!!!

I'm just waiting to get it in West Texas... Of course, T-Mo will be upgrading to LTE by they time I get UMTS gear out here. :(

T-Mobile's coverage maps show that many of the October cities are already live:

If you go the coverage map on their web site, there's a little check box at the bottom for "data coverage", which I had never noticed before. Check it out.
