T-Mobile G1 said to be landing October 17th, Sprint Android phone out by 2009?

We've already been hearing that the HTC G1 (otherwise known as the Dream) would be landing on T-Mobile in late October, but VentureBeat now claims that it has further pegged the actual release date down to October 17th (it'll apparently start shipping on the 13th), which would be a tad earlier than most had expected. What's more, the site is also citing "multiple sources" claiming that Sprint's own Android phone will "definitely" be out by 2009, and that it will have "other functionality" than the Dream / G1. Ah, the endless cycle of speculation. Place your bets, folks.[Via The Boy Genius Report]

I guess I'll have to wait for 2009 for the "other functionality", 'cause the G1 will just be a POS then. I NEED that "other functionality", I just KNOW I do.
Really what could this be? Isn't the whole point of Android, iPhone, et al, that you can add functionality?
My money is on a laser pointer. That would be about right for Sprint.

It's probably a flip phone of some kind. I don't think "other functionality" would fit alongside another touchscreen/qwerty keyboard setup (by T-Mobile). Or perhaps it's an touchscreen only phone.

Sprint will probably load its own software on top of the open OS so that they can still get revenue from GPS, music downloads, TV, video downloads, ringtone downloads etc......

Possibly a CDMA version of the HTC Touch HD coming to sprint with Android loaded on it instead of Windows mobile or a version of the likes? That would be huge for Sprint being it lackluster lately...

A Touch HD running Android....now that would be a Dream phone. I remeber when the Instinct lanched there were rumors of a similar device with Android in Q4 of 08 or Q1 of 09 so I guess we will have to wait and see.

And if sprint did put some of their touch to the new android, SO WHAT. At least they seem to be on the ball with all the new stuff. Besides you dont see ATT and Big RED getting this. So Hats off to Sprint. Way to go.
