Motorola MOTOZINE ZN5 hands-on

Announced in June, the MOTOZINE ZN5 is a pretty humdrum set, but somehow we're liking it's same-as-most-other-motos-look. The handset feels good in the hand, the screen looks pretty spanky -- even if the keyboard feels cheap and seems like it'll wear your fingers down -- and if you're into simplicity, this is likely a winner. While China was the first country getting this set, it seems we may well see it float its way over here after all. For more pics of more angles, follow the link.

It's gotten to the point where a phone with a 5mp camera by Kodak with a Xenon flash is humdrum? I guess that's a good thing.

Yeah, although I certainly would not call the handset humdrum, I will say that it's a disappointment in the radio department: it lacks 3G. For a flagship handset in 2008 that's simply unforgivable.
Seeing pictures of the device, it's actually making me want to get it. I actually like the design a lot and that camera looks like it's serious business. I know it has WiFi but I am not sure if it's only for file transfers or if it can be used for web browsing, too.
If it were reasonably subsidized, I'd definitely recommend this to people looking for a powerful phone without the need for 3G--let's face it, not everyone needs it, especially if it has WiFi as described above....although for a flagship device, it's exclusion is a big mistake.

The only better camera phone then the ZN5 is the i8510 (and maybe the C905). Not humdrum at all.

"Banking on the imaging department Motorola has come up with an interesting and well-rounded product. As far as image quality is concerned it’s one of the best solutions you can find out there, and it’s definitely ahead all other mass-market phones. For now, let’s leave the Sony Ericsson C905 and Samsung 8150 out of the picture, since they both employ the same Samsung-branded 8 Mpix CMOS module and certainly do surpass the ZN5 on some fronts, but are nothing out of this world after all. What’s more interesting is that Motorola has kept mum on a lot of things about this phone.
While the ZN5 is not positioned as a music-centric handset, it ships with a pretty decent player, FM-radio, and 3.5mm headset jack. But more importantly, its sound quality is nearly unrivalled these days, being on a par with the ROKR E8 and some dedicated music players (by the way it trumps the Apple iPod on this front hands down). In other words, the average user will be more than content with what the ZN5 brings to the table, plus it’s quite loud and has very few settings to worry about."

Not that Eldar BS, please! The C905 employs a Sony Exmor sensor, not a Samsung one.

While this does gives a definite nod to Motorola's "tried and true" design sensibilities, I gotta say it does look like a step in the right direction for Moto. Now if theyll only redesign Alexander

Just a note: I went to AT&T today and asked about the ZN5, and they said they will be getting it in a couple of weeks, and that it should go for about $150 with the rebate.
