HTC's Touch HD gets even more dreamy
While that 480 x 800 pixel display has everybody in a feverish pant, MoDaCo has released even more unconfirmed specs on the rumored HTC Touch HD guaranteed to pound a lustful wave of disruption into your handset purchasing plans. To start with, it's listed at 115 x 62.8 x 12-mm making it almost exactly the same size as the svelt 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3-mm iPhone 3G. That's a good start. Now slip GPS, HSDPA data, a 5 megapixel camera (no flash), stylus, microSD slot, 3.5-mm headphone jack, and 1350mAH battery into the mix and you've got the stuff of serious, WinMo fantasy. We'll know if it's all legit soon enough as MoDaCo claims a retail date by Christmas. Yes, really. Only thing missing is WiFi... and Android.

I really don't know who HTC is trying to target here.
At first, I went "Wow!". Then I realised the limitations. The main one being the complete lack of onboard memory. Seriously, if you want this to take on a certain other full touchscreen phone, you need to match it's capacity.
The resistive screen is a downer as well, especially with no D-Pad. Makes gaming useless and impossible. :(
stevejobsmultitouchedme @ Sep 11th 2008 8:42AM
SDHC slot means you can add up to 32GB.
Jeeter @ Sep 11th 2008 9:25AM
I'm not sure I get your "the complete lack of onboard memory" issue. I'm sure like every other WinMo device it'll have a decent set of ROM/RAM...512MB/256MB or something pretty standard - hell it has to have something to run the frickin OS. It's got microSD so I don't see the problem. I'm still surprised that devices do come with a certain amount of onboard storage. I would much rather have an expansion option like microSD so that I could add the amount of memory I needed. And that amount could change significantly over the life of the device or just based on what I was going to do that day or weekend. With a 5MP camera (maybe even decent video recording quality), I could see photos & video eating up space, especially when a special event comes up. I would hate to have to remove stuff from my permanent onboard memory in order make room for recording long video clips. I'd rather simply swap microSD cards and keep rollin!

Full disclosure: I own an LG KS20.
I *know* that the SDHC slot means 32gb microSD's. But my point is: for a multimedia phone [3.5mm jack, finally!], we should have BOTH. It's just as grave an error as the iPhone's *lack* of a memory card slot.
I'm not talking RAM here, I'm very happy with the figures posted. Blows my KS20 out of the water :)
The point is, this is supposed to be a multimedia phone, and it still has big flaws that I hope are corrected by launch.

Now slip in Android... and we might have a deal!

What you guys are missing is the 4-inch display.

A killer of a phone! I hope I can get it into my hands asap.

I was going to jump on the Touch Pro figuring it was going to be another year or two. I've wanted a Windows Mobile device that had similar hardware to iPhone, HTC really hit the ball out of the park with this one from the initial views. Between that screen and the shear power, just... wow. If they throw in an accelerometer or something and say it will fully support WM7 when it comes out next year.... this could be a killer phone. I haven't been this excited in awhile. I love this Apple/HTC competition, so many great products are going to come from this regardless of what you prefer.
dj496 @ Sep 11th 2008 7:56AM
3.5mm headphone jack - w00t!
superklye @ Sep 11th 2008 8:08AM
Which provider(s) is it coming to? Damn it! I was dead set on the Touch Pro but now...now I don't know which one I'm going to get. Price and carrier is going to determine it...
DssTrainer @ Sep 11th 2008 8:57AM
what processor will it use? i hope they trashed that 400mhz crap... We need 620Mhz like iPhone has!
CLShortFuse @ Sep 11th 2008 9:32AM
Don't worry about Android. Somebody already ported it for the AT&T Tilt / Kaiser / Tytn II (we're up to 0.9SDK) and this runs the same CPU (Qualcomm MSM 7201a). Android or WinMo, on the same phone. Nice...
Josh G @ Sep 11th 2008 8:20PM
Actually, you're incorrect!
The Kaiser [my previous phone] runs the MSM7200 chipset, not the 7201a. The 7201 includes a processor and chipset upgrade, but get this:
NO hardware video acceleration [as designated by the "a"].
That's a damn shame, although the Kaiser didn't have drivers to begin with, heh. But regardless, it will be a fairly easy port, considering the codebase for Android already has some stuff in place for the 7201 I believe.
CLShortFuse @ Sep 13th 2008 11:34PM
New Kaiser models have 7201 instead of 7200. They aren't running 7201a though. And D3D drivers for the Kaiser has been made already.
NuShrike @ Dec 3rd 2008 6:58AM
The "a" in 7201a or 7200a means 65nm shrink from 90nm ONLY. Go do some real research.

How ironic! HTC clearly sees the hypocrisy of those railing against all-things-Apple. After all, A WinMo phone is a WinMo phone is a WinMo phone, regardless of its other specs or who its manufacturer is. If this HTC phone takes off and sells well, Apple will be hysterically laughing all the way to the bank (again). This isn't being innovative, HTC. This is pure, unadulterated copy-catting where formfactor is concerned. Although you've invested quite a bit of capital and sweat-equity, HTC, get back on-track and chart your own course. It's what started and built your success so just stop the foolishness, K?
Frankie @ Sep 11th 2008 11:39AM
You're soooo stupid! The M8 was announced before the iPhone, and the form factors are nearly identical. Who's copying who again?
Iphone looks like every early WM device, minus the hardware bottons. PPC 6600 (released 4 years ago) - hardware bottons = iPhone form factor
Whos's coping who?
niloahs @ Sep 11th 2008 12:07PM
Almost there, now when the HTC Touch HD Pro slider comes out, I'll be sold, I need a physical keyboard with this 4" screen.
mphayvanh @ Sep 11th 2008 12:53PM
Another iTool posting without facts to support his Fanboism. Hint LG Prada. Google, Wiki, whatever you need to do to educate yourself before defending your love affair with a simple device.
Richard @ Sep 11th 2008 1:39PM
There's the form factor argument, the interface argument, the OS argument and the user-experience argument.
Form factor: I prefer the big iPhone screen, but want a slide-out keyboard - HTC, make a "pro" version.
Interface: I like multi-tasking (don't tell my girl friend). I like having my daily schedule, the weather and stocks on my Today screen. As Sony Ericsson have released the SDK for their new "Panels" interface - so much the better. That means It'll be available as a UI for most WinMob phones - I expect.
OS: WinMob has greater capabilities than iPhone. Period. End of story. The only complaint is the limit to 62k colors of screen resolution (Symbian phones resolve like 200 million colors, but I digress).
End-user-experience: Actually, I mean end-to-end user experience and Apple has this licked - hands down. Now, if the boyz on the Zune team can tackle that and make it all work with a WinMob phone - AND WITHOUT THE DREADED CUPERTINO-STYLE DRM TRASH - consider it game over.
Winner: Windows Mobile - with a little help from HTC and Sony Ericsson
backbeat @ Sep 11th 2008 6:24PM
@Frankie: What you fail to recognize is that I'm applauding HTC for their early creativity against the likes of Palm and Samsung. They've lost that edge to a degree and rather than create original designs are taking the easy, cheesy way out. Instead of making such a childish remark ("You're soooooo stupid"), fully comprehend what you're responding to.
@mphayvanh: Your uninformed opinion notwithstanding, all I've used for the past 6 years has been Blackberry and WinMo after Palm folded its tent. Your paranoid assumptions of any other consideration not lining up with yours to the Nth-degree notwithstanding, get informed, _then_ form your opinion.
backbeat @ Sep 11th 2008 7:26PM
And before any of the kiddies digs the hole they're in any deeper, you may want to ask your older brother or sister if they remember this, circa _1993_: Apple's Newton, 3 years before anyone had even heard of a Palm Pilot:

Again, I'm a Blackberry and WinMo user who happens to know the facts.
mphayvanh @ Sep 12th 2008 12:24AM
notwithstanding...notwithstanding...notwithstanding...

^ That's what I get for wading into the low-end of the kiddie (gene) pool.

No slide out keyboard? That's a big miss for me. I'm assuming the non-HD version of the Pro has it.

Could someone please pass me a towel? I just made a little mess looking at this.

Why does VZW have to be exactly one year behind the curve on every WinMo phone. They will probably get the diamond the day this comes out in Europe.
Khaos @ Sep 19th 2008 2:40PM
Because it would make them the best cell phone company out there. They have amazing service but there phones are generally poop and they limit them with their debilitating VZW interface they install on all of them.
