Treo 800w gets updated, USB and battery main beneficiaries
Though the Treo Pro has tempered pretty much any love we'd had for the suddenly ancient-looking 800w, we've got to hand it to Palm -- they've been on the ball with software updates since the phone's release a month and a half ago. The latest, which Palm calls "highly recommended for all Treo 800w devices," fixes problems with the detection of certain USB accessories and the inability to charge a completely dead battery (and don't worry, they've posted a trick for getting it charged enough to install the update). What's more, this particular patch can be applied over the air simply by visiting a URL, which is exactly what we like to hear.[Via Palm Infocenter]

Damn, that's kind of a big deal. I let my phone die and I couldn't charge it until this update came out? Erm, way to go Palm, I'd tell all my friends about it but your software wont let my damn phone charge so I can txt them!

Well, that is a common problem with almost ALL Li-on batteries, but it is especially apparent in HTC manufactured phones, they simply do not posses a strong enough charging circuit to charge a completely dead battery. You can of course "jump off" a dead Li-on with a 9Volt battery or similiar, and then get it to charge in the phone. We have to do this with HTC Wizards and such all the time.

If you read the page it says you can trickle charge it with your USB cable if it dies all the way...

If you let a Lithium Ion cell phone battery die COMPLETELY, not just to zero%, but beyond that(and yes, it can happen), you phone may not be able to charge it. This is a BIG problem with both HTC made phones and Windows Mobile, they do not posses a strong enough charging circuit to be charged over USB. What you have to do, is either connect the phone to a wall charger that outputs at least one amp to get it to charge, or jump the battery off with another Li-On, or with a 9 volt battery to get it a tiny bit of charge, and then your phone will recognize it.

Palm fell out of my graces with the 700wx and 750w. The 800w is more of the same palm bs. I switched to the iPaq 910c and I love it. It's super thin, it has wifi+hdspa+real gps+a huge lipo battery. It's also quite snappy, even before you overclock it to 620mhz. better still, hp gives you a CLEAN version of Wimo 6.1 without any of that lousy carrier branding bs. ...why would anyone buy a palm? ....I think the ipaq 910c is the current top wimo phone, but the bb Bold is the best overall smartphone. ...and of course, if you're not into typing a lot, and you don't mind crappy fake gps, poor battery life, etc. the iPhone is still king of everything else. I think it'll be on top until WiMo gets a REAL upgrade. ...2010?
