The HTC S740 gets handled
HTC is keeping the S740 under wraps at IFA, but the crafty folks at newmobile managed to score some time with the new QWERTY slider, and it looks pretty decent. Thinner than the Touch Pro, the keyboard is basically the same, with the same sort of stealth-look backplate as the Diamond. No motion sensor, so the display only rotates when the slide is open, but that's really all we know -- the unit wasn't running a production-ready version of Windows Mobile, so impressions are a little up in the air. This phone is ugly ugly ugly...and to top that off...really bulky for this day and age. HTC better get back to the drawing board

Actually, the device is quite tiny and thin.

Now I'm not sure if this picture has been photoshopped, if HTC is trying something new or if they're just really stupid but why are the "y" and the "z" buttons switched?

I'm guessing that's the German keyboard config.

Yea, the QWERTZ keyboard layout is pretty common in Europe, I assume a North American version would adapt the more standard QWERTY, although it does wreck havoc on the fact that the ROM Kitchen gets messed up with multiple keyboard layouts.

I just don't understand the form factor. I used a Verizon 6700 for a long time and never once thought "Gee, I sure wish I had a numeric keypad sticking out all the time!" Maybe they're secretly targeting couples who want to share a handset but can't agree on keyboard type. Or for people with split personalities.

The 6700 was a dog-with-fleas. If it's your preference, or its current lunchpale equivalents, by all means ... stick with them.

How can you say the keyboard is "basically the same"? Take a good look at the touch pro again, because I think you are forgetting an entire row of keys.

There was a working device at IFA, we handled it properly today and we managed to get a perfectly working device from an HTC man at a booth... The size of the device absurd, our experiences with the S740 can be found at the following link:

Nokia should have asked HTC to re-design their E90 Communicator. This is a really nice phone especially for Communicator fan boys. I like the design it's very unique compared to the phones releasing by others brands in Q4.
