Sony Ericsson's XPERIA X1 reviewed in breathtaking detail
If you're looking for pictures from every conceivable angle of Sony Ericsson's first foray into the danger-fraught tar pit that is Windows Mobile, well, here you go. In fact, Smape goes so far as to take a look at both the black and metallic versions of the X1 (but don't get to attached to the metallic one just yet, seeing how it might have gotten the axe in some markets), noting that they're assembled exceptionally well and exude a premium look that's rarely seen in the WinMo realm. Unfortunately, they've dinged the keyboard for the same crappy feel observed elsewhere, something we're all hoping gets fixed by the time it hits production in a couple months' time. With that wild panel interface, you might expect some pretty miserable performance when you have the thing going at full tilt; fortunately, though, Smape reports that lags occur "only occasionally," which is better than "frequently" or "always" as far as we're concerned. Camera performance is said to be better than the Touch Pro's, though both HTC and Sony Ericsson (via HTC, ironically) still have plenty of time to tweak that via a well-placed firmware update or two. At any rate, we're definitely looking forward to seeing this thing finally materialize so the Touch Pros and X1s of the world can start duking it out in those rough, dog-eat-dog professional trenches of the world.

From this very article:
"Smape reports that lags occur "only occasionally," which is better than "frequently" or "always" as far as we're concerned. "
Unfortunately, the latter two are the best way to explain the problems on my iPhone 3G, even after two firmware "bug fixes"
Luckily, my sister wants an iPhone, so I think i'll get rid of mine and buy this

Man... Dream or Xperia? Maybe put Android on the X1?
haX0r @ Aug 25th 2008 4:07PM
Now that would be interesting to see Android on this device!
t-pain @ Aug 24th 2008 11:08PM
Sounds promising but I just can't get on board with the design- the geometric keys are an eye sore and the black on silver is outdated.
VampireHunter Z @ Aug 24th 2008 11:24PM
Spec-wise this phone is pure sex. However the WinMo skin doesn't seem to be as great as the one on the Touch Pro/Diamond. Also the Touch Pro has a more advanced keyboard that includes a CTRL key (very very important).
Plasmoe @ Aug 25th 2008 12:17AM
At $1000+ I cant imagine how they could sell many of these.
Austin @ Aug 25th 2008 12:25AM
This phone is going to be great, but 770€ is truly outrageous.

FINALLY this thing is starting to get a little more exposure and light of day. Hopefully it will launch soon... the Omnia, Innov8, Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Dream, etc... and all of these other phones have stolen the spot light.
I'm really itching for this phone to come out and I'm sure this post filled a void for a lot of people. For those who can't get enough Xperia stuff there is also a bunch at: http://sonyericssonxperia.com/
I really, really can't wait for this thing...

770 euros? that's like $1,100+ in US dollars. who the hell is their market with a price point like that. im sure the thing is great and all but i cant see a phone being worth that much. i mean a 2 year agreement can only knock the price down so much.
Surur @ Aug 25th 2008 6:50AM
In Europe, a 2 year agreement will get you the phone free. You know, like the iPhone is free ine Europe on contract.
JR007 @ Aug 25th 2008 1:53AM
Looks truly amazing, but everyone is right. At a bit over $1,000 USD, this is crazy!
takashisenke @ Aug 25th 2008 2:35AM
700 Euro when translating the price of a phone into USD is $700, because their market is better.
Oh, and it seems like his pricing brackets aren't very accurate because the UK Touch Pro is 519 Pounds or 645 Euro. His numbers are almost 300 euros off. Does this translate equally for the XPERIA as well?
Benjitek @ Aug 25th 2008 3:02AM
This posting refers to a 'preview', not a 'review'... quite a difference between a preview of a pre-production device and a review of one on the market. Thanks though, still interesting reading ;)
Beastage @ Aug 25th 2008 4:37AM
700usd or 700euro for just an unlocked device is pretty standard, dont forget that the inferior iphone 3g 16gb model costs that much when purchased alone and unlocked.
I live in Israel and I can get an HTC Diamond for free from Orange with a plan that keeps the sum of my bills exactly like they are now.

Armani @ Aug 25th 2008 4:30PM
I wonder if any US carrier will pick this up. My contract is up with T-Mobz and I'm waiting for the X1. With a two year contract hopefully the price will be reasonable. Hoping around 300, but I'm not holding my breath.

Did anyone else struggle to read that article?... I really thought it was a tough read. I sincerely think it would have benefited from a strong editing hand. Where is he from? Was the article translated from another language into english using a program?...
Anywhoo, everything else aside, I also thought that there was a definite slant to the article. I got some good insights into the device, but only after re-reading parts of it several times and with my critical reading skillz turned up to 11. It seems, the more I read every where about SE's Xperia X1 the more it seems like the HTC Touch Pro maybe the better deal out of the two... Whatever the case hurry up SE, so we can get some reviews of the two next to each other!

Just the suggestion of lag, and going by the leaked roms, it's running the same WinMob and practically the same Q cpu as Touch Pro, Touch Diamond, Kaiser, etc ... meaning same slow OpenGL/D3D drivers, not much GDI acceleration, etc etc.
I hope they improve it, but hoping got us the Kaiser and the HTC finger.

There are no arrow keys and ctrl key. Means you cant do copy/cut/paste from keyboard. Moreover xperia x1 dont have stylus. means keyboard is useless. Htc touch pro have much better 5 row keyboard with all essesntial keys.
xperia x1 @ Sep 4th 2008 1:33AM
I agree with Jamma, that occasional tags is better than frequent, but Sony Ericcson announced the phone in O7, what the heck have they been doing since then? By now the phone should be perfected, not missing copy paste facilities or having problems with Windows Mobile 6.0. The whole Xperia X1 phone is starting to get frustrating.
