HTC Touch Pro now available in UK
Vodafone expected the Touch Pro to touch down in the UK this month, and sure enough, said expectation has become a reality. HTC's mighty WinMo-powered smartphone is now available from official UK distributor devicewire, and if you just so happen to use pounds as your primary currency, you can claim one of your own for the eye-popping price of £514.99 (including VAT). We won't bother converting that into dollars -- trust us, you're better off pretending you don't know.

Hey, the dollar has gained a bit this week on the market. It's more like $963 now. once the device launches on Sprint's network lets hope we get a good deal on it.

Hopefully in Norway this week too then! :)

Geez, if I didn't have to sell a kidney and my firstborn to afford it, I would be excited about this as I will be through there this month.
SuperSexyErik (^_^) @ Aug 12th 2008 5:04PM
in other news, nobody can afford htc touch pro.
now if only a company would make a good smart phone that was affordable.. like maybe 200 dollors.
mphayvanh @ Aug 12th 2008 5:12PM
That's for an unlock version. What that means to you iTards is that you can take that phone to any GSM carrier and not be held prisoner to long contracts.
And yes, it's expensive for Americans because our dollar can't buy sh*t anymore. Or pay $200, but you get what you pay for (cracks in the case, weak GPS and sluggish 3G and that's just this weeks news).
Beastage @ Aug 12th 2008 5:51PM
Sarcasm?! I hope so
Blad3 @ Aug 12th 2008 9:53PM
in other words, $2200 over the life of a contract for an iphone is just what every person is looking forward to right? idiot.
SuperSexyErik (^_^) @ Aug 13th 2008 3:12AM
oh? and is it cheaper to buy this phone?
$1000 plus 2 year contract?
THINK before you speak.. i keep having to tell you this.. are you a kid or something? you need to listen.
the iphone actually does cool stuff with its internet, unlike other phones.
its a mobile computer. so its monthly prices will go up a bit.
MJ @ Aug 13th 2008 6:36AM
Actually, yes it IS cheaper to buy this phone. Seeing as it is that price WITHOUT a contract.
The handset would be subsidised on contracts and even then that would only be for 12 or 18 months (though we do have 2yr contracts, noone ever takes them out) here in the U.K.
jonathan @ Aug 13th 2008 8:32AM
Does anybody ever stop to think for one minute that unsubsidized phones are only cheaper in the long run if you decide to NOT USE IT AT ALL?? I guess you could nix data to save money, but that would be a crime on a device like this. You will be paying for service regardless of how you buy the device!!!
All you get is the peace of mind that comes from knowing you can shop around for service (as long as the phone is supported on multiple networks).
And as for everyone who immediately calls "iTard! iTard!"... SuperSexyErik didn't even mention any Apple tech. Grow up. The iPhone and the Touch Pro are both great phones.
mphayvanh @ Aug 13th 2008 11:54AM
@Jonathan
It's cheaper if you decide not to go with a carrier that charges up the ying yang for data and voice. In most cases, $20 less a month in savings. Dig?
And if you're familiar with SexyErik, he's an Apple fanboy who likes to stalk WinMo & Blackberry posts to interject how amazing and wonderful his cracking and sluggish 3G iPhone is. Who da hell cares? Just be happy and lurk.
I like the iPhone. I'm still debating on the Touch Pro, Android, Blackberry Thunder or iPhone for my next phone in October. At this point, the Touch Pro and Thunder has more of the business features I need. I love the iPhone's web and accelerometer games like MotionX Dice and Monkey Ball. I can like many devices without being a Fan Boy like SexyErik.
SuperSexyErik (^_^) @ Aug 13th 2008 3:05PM
Apple Iphone FTW!!
with supirrior tech and amazing ability, you just cant beat the iphone
Blad3 @ Aug 13th 2008 3:37PM
and with your amazing wit and innate ability, you just can't combat these superior posts because you're a moron.
SuperSexyErik (^_^) @ Aug 13th 2008 4:11PM
awww poor blad3...
your suck with a poor winmo phone, im sorry :(
do you need to see a therapist or just take your pillz?
Blad3 @ Aug 13th 2008 7:44PM
way not to tackle the issues the iphone has. keep it up, you're making the apple user base proud by bringing them down.
Itsuru @ Aug 13th 2008 10:43PM
I have an iphone, I think it's great, but I don't go defending it in any post I can Erik, you're fucking annoying,
SuperSexyErik (^_^) @ Aug 14th 2008 12:53AM
iphone FTWWWW!!!
kalibar @ Aug 14th 2008 6:47AM
Does Engadget have a pretty strict no-banning policy or something? These dogshit Erik comments are on almost every article I click through to, and they're a headache that nearly sucks the enjoyment out of reading Engadget.
Jesus christ kid, stop posting.
matt @ Aug 12th 2008 5:22PM
alright so this isnt a price that you would expect from carriers? prolly a stupid question. tminus 3 months for the verizon version? i really dont care if they cripple it alittle its better than my phone now
netnet @ Aug 12th 2008 6:50PM
What a clunky device.
grull27 @ Aug 12th 2008 7:08PM
I love the phone but that is way too much money to spend on a phone!
Jon Lam @ Aug 13th 2008 2:12AM
I don't see anyone saying it, but I'm guessing no US 3G bands? Okay, I'll go sit in my corner now.
MikeWard1701 @ Aug 13th 2008 8:20AM
Handset only prices for PDA-phones/smartphones are always skyhigh. If you want one, get it with a contract, one with a very good data plan.
So in summary, wait for the T-Mobile version of this, the MDA Vario IV, and sign up to one of their Flext+Web'n'Walk tarrifs.
Judley @ Aug 13th 2008 12:03PM
Can't wait for O2 to get this handset on their books! I've been due an upgrade for a while now and this is definitely my next new toy. :-D
As for the cost, like MikeWard1701 said, just get one with a contract. You're gonna need a contract of some sort anyway, so why not use the contract to reduce the upfront handset cost?
I've been with O2 for years now. I got the K800i, XDA Exec, N95 and my current N95 8GB all for 'free' on a 12 month contract. Didn't pay a penny for the handsets. Admittedly, I do use my phone a LOT, which might have something to do with it. ;o)

has anyone actually used this phone yet? I've got a vario 3 (htc tytn 2,) loved it but have to admit that it's ugly and slow. This looks like it has pretty much the same functionality but in a much prettier case. is that even vaguely right?
