Best Buy to sell iPhone 3G starting next month
And now for the irony: it'll be no better a buy than what you can find at ye olde Apple or AT&T store. Best Buy officially becomes the first third-party retailer in the US to sell the iPhone in an official capacity -- 3G or otherwise -- when it launches the iPhone 3G in some 970 stores plus an additional 18 dedicated Mobile locations on September 7 for the same $199 and $299 price points found elsewhere. Quoth Best Buy Mobile's CEO, "We had a lot of work to do, obviously, to get in a position where Apple and AT&T would feel good about Best Buy Mobile carrying it, and that's what we've done in the last 18 months." In other words, this has been a pretty persistent effort to score the third-party exclusive essentially since the original model was announced, and it's just now paying off. There's no indication on how the addition of Best Buy to the US sales mix will affect production or distribution, but at least there'll be one more place to try to find some frickin' stock.

I'll believe it when I see it. Which will be after 2009 according to the AT&T/Apple exclusive reseller agreement.

Wow. Way to lie to all of your committed/dedicated customers who sprang when it first came out.
Now that both AT&T and Apple have reaped the rewards, anyone who didn't know it was at BestBuy is going to get raped trying to find a unit at an AT&T store.
On another note- I wouldn't want to be the guy working at BestBuy, arguing with a customer about whether or not it can actually be activated without going to the AT&T store before they head home like most Johnny Q. Public with 2.5 kids may have heard (or not, in this case).
Oh yeah, did I hint already and go so far as to say that once again, Apple just screwed over their early adopters and fanboys?
Steve Jobs is going out the way George Lucas did... I can't wait for an iPhone with THX Certification for it's 5.1channel awesomeness blasting out of hand-matched 2mm drivers. It'll be just loud enough to fill a whole cubicle with piercing treble and lackluster bass, pissing off everyone around me trying to get some work done.
/end rant
SuperSexyErik (^_^) @ Aug 13th 2008 3:10AM
who are you married to
Will @ Aug 13th 2008 4:29AM
how exactly did they screw the early adopters? it would've been a million times worse if they had launched it at at&t, apple and best buy stores...it was hard enough to find stock in most cities as it was...it would've just added to the disappointment of many people who could've been in line at one store that ran out, instead of being at one that didn't

This post made no sense but if that was an attempt at a joke, you bombed.

I ordered my 3G Thursday after lunch, got it the following Tuesday morning.
They do a good job of keeping you up to date on where it is, and when it will get there.

The sales guys at apple AT&T can't make any money as it is now.....cuz they cant get inventory. Apple Stores have plenty all day, every day. Having the phone at BB just makes it worse.
