Keepin' it real fake, part CXXVII: OQO G900 mimics Palm Centro

Windows Mobile in a ripoff Palm Centro casing doesn't exactly scream out OQO, but the KIRFers know no boundaries, and at least the "G900" here isn't totally crap underneath that indelicate exterior. You're looking at a 624MHz CPU, 128MB memory, quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE, a 2 megapixel camera, Windows Mobile 6.1, Bluetooth, and a dash of WiFi -- ostensibly better specs than the Centro itself. Of course, this set may not find its way to a provider's shelves near you, but it's refreshing to see KIRF done right, and perhaps even done better for a change. Wonder if they're planning to move two million of these bad boys?

Maybe I am not reading it right, but is the price 2880 yen? As in like 28 canadian dollars according to xe.com? For something that has WM6.1, touchscreen, GPS, a decent processor, quad band? Thats pretty damn impressive if its not a typo or a mistake. Now if only I could read Japanese and would know for certain i could change WM6.1 into an english version.

No, the price is not in yen, it's in Chinese yuan renminbi - they use the same currency symbol. 2880 yuan would roughly be about $421 US, or in your case, $433 CAD, which is expected for those specs. Now bear in mind, OQO doesn't make phones, only UMPCs. This doesn't even qualify as an OQO knockoff, it's just an overpriced Centro knockoff from an unknown Chinese manufacturer illegally using the OQO name.
I'm happy with my Blackjack 2, but the faster CPU, wifi, and touchscreen for this Chinese thing-a-ma-bob does make me jealous. I'm extremely disappointed it has no HSDPA. You can get WM6 phones with similar specs at subsidized costs for the same or even lower than this thing goes for, and won't have to deal with an OS that is probably only in Chinese (unless that's your thing) and questionable warranty issues. I'd get an HTC instead.

Wow, now that makes sense, thanks for the clarification. Yeah the specs of the device are really damn nice, if it wasn't a knock off with the possibility of breaking in no time, it would be an impressive device, even for the price.

Actually, this OQO unit being compared to a Centro is hysterically laughable! It might be what the Centro would have been _if_ the Centro had been designed for an adult, but, alas, twas not its fate.
SPOKE @ Aug 3rd 2008 6:13PM
Actually, Palm copied OQO by coming out with a device that uses a keyboard foor input.
AHAHAHAHA! AHAHAHAHA! AHAHAHAHA!

Is it just me or this actually looks really nice when compared to the Centro?
