Sony Ericsson drags hard on Sony's numbers
It's easy to think of Sony Ericsson as a little drop in parent Sony's gargantuan bucket, but yeah, that's not so much the case. News of the manufacturer's dismal fiscal performance did its fair part in sending Sony's earnings into a free fall, thanks to a cash payout just 3 percent of what it was a year ago -- ¥17.1 billion all the way down to a meager ¥0.6 billion. Talk of Sony's exit from the joint venture is terribly, terribly premature, but you've got to wonder: since the company isn't really a holistic part of the Sony ecosystem, how many consecutive quarters would a crappy balance sheet be tolerated? Im almost a little ashamed to admit that this makes me really happy! After all the trouble I went through with the K850, i feel they deserve this.

Honestly, a couple of quarters of not-so-great growth and Sony is suddenly going to cut and run from a profitable joint venture? After all those years of red ink? I don't think so. Get real people. SE was spending too much on R&D, but that just means they should have some good stuff in the pipeline. And if they don't, they should refocus their efforts on making a select few REALLY good phones, rather than having a million lackluster phones. Remember the glory days when the W810 was the best phone in it's class? They don't need to shove more features into a phone than Nokia, they just need to make something that works better. A good, solid phone with all the features people need (quadband EDGE + triband HSDPA), as well as a decent camera (5 mp at this point), WiFi, very usable keys for texting, an attractive body, and they'll do great. Oh and more marketing would be good too.

Sony agreed to the merger on a whim and Ericsson's arrogance has cost them dearly. This partnership was not meant to last.
