HTC community well on its way to its own accelerated video drivers
Though some newer firmware revs for affected HTC devices have touted video performance tweaks, the company's still not terribly interested in coming out with outright hardware-accelerated binaries to fully support the dormant ATI Imageon circuitry on board, citing a host of technical issues. That's been an ongoing source of ire for some in the user community who've complained of lackluster video playback performance, and after giving up on an official solution, there's been a grassroots effort for homebrew drivers that's finally starting to yield some paydirt. 2D (read: video playback, among other things) acceleration still isn't in the cards, but HTCClassAction.org has released binaries and sample vids showing improved 3D performance thanks to newfound Direct3D and OpenGL ES acceleration. On the issue of whether 2D efforts have been abandoned, the organizers say "we have not [abandoned it], it may still come. The simple fact is, that in this particular case, it was easier to work with the 3D drivers first." Anyone want to test these out and see if your hair's getting blown back by the blistering performance? Follow the break for the full video.

I'm supposed to get excited about a spinning cylinder? Nice guys. That's defiantly almost iPhone quality. ...Keep workin' at it. ;)
Personally I don't think phones need more flash, I think they need more function. Like, why can't I send a fax as easily as a text message? Lots of places (e.g. golf courses) would allow me to schedule a t-time via fax, but not text message.
...Fax probably isn't the best example, but the idea is that I think phones should try to be more useful and less entertaining. Maybe it's just me, but I get bored of even the iPhone glitter after about two weeks.

Well, aside from the fact that your comment is almost completely off-topic... The spinning cylinder is a D3D demo designed to benchmark 3D performance. It's not supposed to impress you.
PeterF @ Jul 21st 2008 12:36PM
I am sure Windows Mobile has a program to send a fax as easily as a text message.

I think Breins comment was a joke... I HOPE it was a joke.
Brien @ Jul 21st 2008 5:12PM
it wasn't a joke, and i was on topic. i know too much about 3d graphics to be wowed.
...am i the only one who noticed the shading doesn't match the light source? this is a VERY basic 3D example.
NuShrike @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:53PM
If you know so much, have you tried the app WITHOUT the drivers? Day and night, but then what do you know?
Rudolphe @ Jul 21st 2008 11:18AM
What good is this though? Are they going to release games to take advantage of it? I'd rather get the video playback running better.
TheGasMan @ Jul 21st 2008 11:28AM
Agreed. The lack of 2D and video acceleration is the real problem. There are nearly no 3D accelerated-capable apps out there except (maybe?) TomTom, or similar.

Wow to the both of you, this represents progress, if you want to be a Debbie Downer, complain about being alive...somewhere else

Yeah, sweet dude. We already saw you write the same thing earlier in the thread.
NuShrike @ Jul 22nd 2008 6:57PM
Are you the only one to notice that you rather have 0.3 FPS apps that are running SAMPLE D3D source be 'lighted' correctly while missing the mountain that it's > 30FPS now?
seung @ Jul 21st 2008 2:16PM
lol at guy complaining about lack of features then whining that the spinning cylinder is not "iphone quality"
wow
jbearamus @ Jul 21st 2008 2:18PM
that's not the point. the reason for this post is just to show that progress has been made by end users where HTC refuses to. yeah this isn't anything special and impressive to look at but it does show the potential for things to come
Peter F @ Jul 21st 2008 3:14PM
Jesus christ people. I remember trying that rotating cylinder app months ago and I was getting about 1 frame per 5-10 seconds.... this is amazing!
Chris @ Jul 21st 2008 5:34PM
@Brien
1 - Perhaps you should consider the post in its proper context which is grassroots developers doing something the device maker said is too technically complex to undertake at this time.
2 - No one reading about this cares about the Jesusphone.
3 - The fact that your course still uses fax instead of email or the web for tee time reservations says a lot about your course and its members.
4 - You comment, combined with the fact that you get bored so easily just tells the rest of us that not only are you a tool, but you also have ADHD.
5 - Watching Jimmy Neutron over and over while drooling on yourself and rocking back-and-forth on your haunches does NOT make you an expert in 3D animation.

Okay, so... after picking myself up off the back of the wall... that's pretty still cool for homebrew drivers. While the 3D component might be useful for some neat-o 3D-ish interface to my Vogue (Touch), I hope they can continue to produce something for 2D acceleration.
What I wonder the most about though is if this unused chip has anything to do with video recording performance. 320x240 max??? I was surprised by that. I was hoping for 640x480 @ even 15fls.
