Rogers extends $30 data plan to full 3G smartphone range
Rogers' new $30, 6GB data plan -- unveiled at the collective relief of virtually every would-be Canadian iPhone 3G owner -- is going to end up seeing duty outside the Apple realm. Canada's largest GSM carrier (and only GSM carrier of consequence, really) has mercifully decided to let all devices in its 3G smartphone range in on the $30 party, a range that includes winners like the Nokia N95, HTC TyTN, and Samsung Jack, among others. Good call, Rogers -- now let's just remove that limited-time offer label and make this a permanent part of your plan menu, shall we?

Actually I reported yesterday on Gadgetnorth.com, that I called up Rogers and was able to get them to confirm that if you have a more expensive data plan right now with a blackberry, or other device you also qualify for the $30 for 6 gig plan......yep they let me put it on my curve.....

according to my sources it is a bogus plan. it does not tether like their real plans. the only real data plans available anywhere in the world are tethering plans. rogers/fido are charging the same as most other countries including USA.
i dare you to hook up your laptop and test that 6gb plan. tell us what your bill says because my source says you would be in for a surprise! the reason this is important is third party apps require tethering plans. an example would be uploading images/videos using shozu you will be charged without a tethered data plan.

I added this to my BlackBerry Pearl 8100 on day one of the data plan launch.
Anyone can add this plan, and you can switch over your currently data plan to this without any issue at all. The only catch is that you have to renew your plan. I had 2 years and 9 months left on my current data plan that was $30/300MB and renewed for the 3 year term (woohoo, a whole 3 extra months) and was able to add the $30/6GB without any issue.
This also works for Grey market phones as well.
PS. It does allow tethering. It states in one of the flyers that were distributed to the employees that it was included.

yes, but the fine print says you have to sign a three year "data" contract, which is on top of whatever contract you already have.... robbers...
exstasie @ Jul 16th 2008 9:54AM
Wouldn't you want to sign a 3-year data contract? For 3-years you're guaranteed to have 6GB for $30. The promo ends in August, so who knows what the price will be by then.
Like I said, I had 2 Years and 9 Months left on my Data contract and all I had to do was re-new it so it only added on 3-months worth which is nothing.
BTW, the DECF is only $100 so if I wanted to get out of my data contract its only $100. Having to sign a 3-year contract to get $30/6GB or stick with the $30/300MB is definitely worth the $100 Risk.

Wow, now we're even exporting our sense of entitlement, from here in the US., and it appears, just like everything else, to be more of a benefit to others than to ourselves!
But you know what? Either way I think it's awesome that Rogers is bending like that. Sounds like ATT may have some splainin to do since other companies can now offer tethering for $30.012 (Canadian$ in US$). It's effing $65 dollars with ATT!!!! Luckily I somehow got it ages ago for $35.
Dave @ Jul 16th 2008 12:10PM
If you're on ATT and actually sign up for the tethering you're a sucker.

This isn't good news, it's bad news. Up to now the only Rogers customers to be sentenced to a 3-year jail sentence were iPhone users. Now Rogers is trying to trick all its smartphone users into agreeing to the 3-year jail sentence.
Even if you have an unlocked, unsubsidized phone, Rogers will demand you sign for 3 years to get this rate. Why? It's not because they have your best interests in mind. Data prices, and indeed all cellular prices in Canada, are going to go down over the next 3 years. The only reason Rogers is locking in its customers is because it's a monopoly that wants to retain market share by contractual means rather than by competing on price with the new entrants to the marketplace. And they want YOU to pay for that!
exstasie @ Jul 16th 2008 1:30PM
Yes, I agree with you that they are trying to lock you into a contract and to retain the market as there will be new players coming in down the road in the next few years.
But honestly, like I've said its not that big of a deal. The maximum you are forced to pay to for the DECF is $100. I will definitely save more than $100 throughout the term of this contract.
Even if there was a better plan that would by chance come to the market, you could easily switch your plan over to that (it will force you to renew your contract) but that $100 DECF is worth it.
PS. no one us forcing you to sign a 3 year contract. If you don't want to then you can stick with your $30/300MB. You can stop bitching because it's not like they are forcing you to sign up for the promotion. We should be happy that they are even offering such a plan. It is probably one of the best plans in the world and is superior to ATT's unlimited plan because from others have said that doesn't allowe tethering and it has a 5GB soft cap.
Ben88338833 @ Jul 16th 2008 2:01PM
Thank you endgadget for reporting this. I just saved a ton of money on my data plan! Also you don't even need a 3G phone to be eligible for this promotion. And Rogers confirmed to me also that this plan allows tethering.
bengreen21 @ Jul 17th 2008 8:46AM
Awesome I just heard about this today when I called to check why the 300MB plan had yet to switch over. I am going to upgrade my phone anyways so I guess I have no real choice, especially since I can tether.
moe @ Jul 18th 2008 8:52AM
i called fido back and they now confirm it is a limited time offer tethering plan. but one needs to realize that although it is 3 years, fido does not charge for plan changes. so if something better comes out you can change the data plan as long as the 3 years remain. this is the best plan in north america especially with fido's awesome talk plans that are unrivaled even by rogers.
Shades @ Jul 19th 2008 12:35AM
30$ 6GB plan is eligible for teathering as long as your device supports it.
Yes you sign a 3 year contract to stay with Rogers but you can change to any plan that comes along at no extra charge. So while they are locking you to Rogers they are not locking you to the plan.
Since Rogers is the only GSM carrier, locking yourself to them and any new plans they offer is not all that bad. Sure if a new GSM carrier comes along you might want to hop to some uber plan they release. Chances are you will just be roaming on Rogers anyway as it will take the new carrier a while to build out coverage. Do you really think that Rogers would not compete with a carrier that is using its own network to undercut it?
3 years of 6GB (true TCP/IP Internet access not some HTTP proxy crap) at $30 bucks is a great deal.
